I used to rarely eat mature coconut as is, I normally use i in recipes, and recently learned one mature coconut has over 1400 calories, that's about the equivalent of 2 full meals.

Since I discovered this I found raw coconut meat is a great alternative to the potatoes I used to sometimes eat (but get sick [congested/runny nose] each time so I stopped) because they have the same qualites:
-Fast and easy to prepare (plus coconut doesn't need the 1 hour cooking time)
-Taste good
-High calorie, so it's a meal in itself

Now when I want something quick and filling, rather than reaching for a quick cooked meal I break open a coconut, can barely eat half of it and I'm full, and I have the rest as a 2nd quick meal.

Best of all, you get all this for $1.29! It seems almost too good to be true! 2 whole healthy meals for $1.29? With a mature coconut, that becomes reality!

1400 calories!? Are you sure? What about young coconuts?

wow, i had no idea! i looked up young coconuts just to see and they're apparently nowhere near that - 140 cals, 3 grams of fat. seems low to me but the mature coconut numbers sounded way high, so who knows. luckily being raw we don't have to worry too much about this stuff :)

"Nutritional Benefits
Young coconuts are considered highly nutritious. One whole coconut has only 140 calories and provides 17% of the RDA for calcium. The total fat content is 3 grams, all saturated. With a zero content of cholesterol, the young coconut has 50 mg sodium, 28 grams of carbohydrate, 2 grams of fiber,15 grams of sugar, and 2 grams of protein." http://www.vegparadise.com/highestperch58.html#Nutrition

The raw grated meat of a mature coconut has 283 calories and 2.7 grams of protein for 1 cup. For the carb counters, that 1 cup contains 12.2 grams of carbohydrates. The sodium content is low at 16 mg. Coconut is a high fiber food that delivers 7.2 grams for 1 cup of freshly grated meat.

I usually only get about 2 cups of meat from my mature coconuts.

My box of young coconuts says 270 calories apiece...so I trust that more :)
140 just isn't possible for something so yummy!

1400 calories makes sense to me, if it were 1000 or less I'd be able to eat one in one sitting, but I have never managed to eat an entire coconut to myself in one sitting no matter how hungry I am. They are quite high in fat which is where the high calorie content is from.
