View Full Version : Too much fiber, and a questionable cure

Ok, just wanna say that I'm not advocating eating muffins here, but that I did eat one for therapeutic measure, and would like to share my experience, maybe get some feedback. So I went on a trip to go snowboarding yesterday, I woke up at 3:30 and tossed a handful of cocoa nib into my mouth. Then I made a Green smoothie from some rhubarb, 2 apples, and half a bunch of swiss chard, and a little box of blueberries. (my smoothie making could definately use some refinement.) I should mention that my blender barely blends this stuff. I made about a quart of the stuff and ate it on the 4 hour car ride up to the mountain. Got to the mountain a little after 8 am, the lifts are just opening. I put a bunch of snowpea's in my jacket pocket to munch on while sitting on the lift. SO I'm snowboarding and munching on these snowpeas (with the peel, don't know if your supposed to do that...) as well as raw cocoa buckwheat cruchies from the HFS all morning.

I start to get a serious cramp right underneath my ribs. I try to do some breathing, take a break, some hot tea, nothing was really working. Then I realized that I had been eating all very high fiber foods. Especially the snowpeas. I had a craving for banana's, but there where none at the super SAD deli on the mountain. I thought to myself, what would be the lowest fiber food here, and after looking around some I found a banana nut muffin. The first ingredient on the list was sugar! This is the antihesis of what I should be eating. But then I found the low .5 grams soluble fiber i was looking for. This was to be my medicine.

I slowly ate the muffin and my pains went away after about 15 minutes of doing so. My hypothesis of over eating fiber seemed to be correct, and remedied by eating the opposite, the most low fiber food I could find.
Now since I obviously agree that eating an otherwise unhealthy muffin isn't the optimal way to deal with this, prevention being the best cure. But in case something like this where to happen to someone, what might be a better (hopefully raw) food then muffins, which has no fiber and just basically dissolves in your mouth?

If you think you have a problem with fiber, you should probably switch to juicing greens instead of blending them. At least for a while!

Hi Mike, not sure if you tried drinking more water, but I find when I consume a lot of fiber I have to increase my water intake to keep it moving. I get a pain like you described under my rib cage when I'm dehydrated and eat a lot of fiber. Bananas and apples seem to work for me also for some reason. I used to eat a lot of flax crackers with avocados and having a banana or two really helped move them along in my intestines. Raw banana ice cream was the best! Fresh squeezed grapefruit, lemon or watermelon juice is good for fiber cramping too.

To make a rhubarb pie, one needs almost as much sugar as rhubarb because it's so bitter.
