This sort of came up on the "If you like Pina Coladas" thread. Is there a website that can ship young coconuts?
Also, is there such thing as organic coconut? Are they all organic, perhaps?
Thanks,

I found some after trying a few asian/chinese/indian type markets. Beware of the white pointy top trimmed ones, they are dipped in formaldehyde, a high carcinogenic chemical (embalming fluid) which make the whole nut taste like delicious embalming fluid, I'm never buying those again. I now get the green fresh ones or undipped ones.

Yikes! I almost bought one of those pointy ones the other day!! It looks like that just leaves those huge, untrimmed ones, then? If so, those would probably cost a small fortune to have shipped... Darn.

Did you try all your nearby asian/indian/chinese markets? I live in a pretty small city in Quebec, Canada and at least 2 nearby stores sell them!
By the way, I looked for some for 2 years before finding a place that had them, so don't give up.

I live in a Vt proportioned town - here there is no "nearby" asian/indian/chinese market, though I think this is going to have to be the way to go because the cost of shipping is prohibitive.
I will just have to pick some up the next time I visit my fathers; I just need to make sure it's organic, or not dipped in formaldehyde, anyway:)
Peace,

What's a "Vt proprotioned town"? I checked online for accronyms, none seem to make sense... vacuum tube? visiting teacher? voting trust? virtualization technology? Don't think it's any of those lol.

LOL - Yea, I live in Vermont, USA...
"Vt proportioned" is another way of saying "smallish."
beckx - yes, you win, but raweater does get points for being so studious:)
Peace!

I just had my first young coconut today. It was the white pointy kind. I don't know if it was dipped in formaldehyde or not, but it didn't taste like embalming fluid (at least I don't think so . . . I've never tasted embalming fluid). The juice inside filled the whole coconut and was delicious, but there was only a thin layer of jelly-like flesh that only amounted to about 1/2 cup. Is this normal for a young coconut?

formaldehyde? Yikes, why doesn't my health food store know about this? I've never seen the green ones anywhere, I'll have to call around, I'm sure there's a chinese market around here. But how do you open a green one? Is it harder? I learned how to open the white pointy ones by watching a raw food video on you tube. I was so proud to have that "secret" knowledge, lol. Now I need a new secret! ;-)
