I went to Group Kick last night. It's a cardio class with kick boxing moves. I suck. I suck so bad I almost walked out. I am SOOOOO uncoordinated. I looked like a toddler trying to imitate mommy. I was incredibly embarrassing. I used to run and run and run. I love exercising. I love feeling the burn, but with these 2 bum knees it's difficult to find anything that can *really* get my heart rate up. My knees are killing me today. In fact I had to go down the stairs 1 step, pause, 1 step, pause, all with the same foot forward cuz my right knee KILLS to bend. I am very stuck at 140. I walk for 90 minutes-UP HILL or go on the elliptical for an hour, but I am STUCK at 140. I am so very frustrated. Swimming is out, as there is no pool for miles around out here in the sticks.
I'm not down about this, I'm just incredibly frustrated and confused as to HOW to get the rest of the weight off if I can't up my cardio. I mean I already go for an hour or two at the gym. That means I leave my house at 8:45 and come back at 12-12:30 because the closest gym is 30 minutes away, more if I hit construction or traffic, which is often.
I just NEED to figure this out. My knees are so mad at me right now.....
I miss running so much I could cry. :(

There are a couple of threads here showing so many things you can do to eliminate excess weight. You do NOT have to get your cardio up. I've eliminated LOTS of excess weight by lifting weights and walking.
Here's an example of how SOME people do it: http://www.youtube.com/results?search_query=zenkahuna&search=Search
What's more.... no boring routine exercising. Just get out; make your body and what you have around you, your "gym".
Most of, have fun!

On nice days I like to walk or bike for exercise on rainy days I like to do this:

Some high reps with light weights to build muscle will help alot. You don't need to bulk up infact you won't but if you replace some fat with muscle then you will be burning more calories everyday through a higher metabolism.
if you have a chat with one of the gym instructors they may be able to help you out with some exersizes.
My instructor Kate keeps amending my routine so i don't get bored.
As the better weather comes along it will get easier to fit in more exercise and you often hit a plateau when trying to lose weight as the body adapts.

I will start off by saying please everyone don't get upset with me I'm not advocating counting calories. But you might want to take a sample of your menu and figure out calorie content, for example if you are consuming 8000 calories a day you may want to (as Alissa says) tweak your eating a little and that might help. I am by NO MEANS saying you should take up calorie counting.

Lots of great ideas. How about dancing. Just started back this weekend and lots of fun and great toning exercise. Felt like a beginner since it's been years--but will not fault myself as I had FUN.

I'm like that every day with arthritis. Just remember, that YOUR pain will go away shortly. :)

Are you able to bike outdoors since you are "out in the sticks"? Spinning class (if your gym offers it) would be great!
I think when we hit a plateau with weight loss its a sign to change something, most likely the intensity. Have you tried incorporating intervals? 30 second bursts on the elipitical or bike at 95-100% intensity will burn lots of calories and get your metabolism moving! Does your gym offer circut training? that is also a fun way to switch things up. I'm sorry there isn;t a pool around, you would love deep water running. Just like the real thing!
Also remember if you are lifting weights, and building muscle, it weighs more than fat. You shouldn't obsess about the numbers on the scale. Instead look at how your clothes are fitting.
I also second the recomendation to look at calorie intake vs. output. Sometimes what we "think" we are doing is not actually what is happening and it is good to put it down on paper and have it stare you back in the face. (Do I sound like I have done that?! LOL!)

Walking is wonderful, I love it so much. I'm up here freezing my butt of in Chicago and still manage to get walking in!

oh i'm awful at group classes.
i'm sure you probably have, but yoga is great and obviously very low impact for your knees.
What about rebounding?? Did I miss someone's suggestion? The impact seems to be pretty light. My mom can't do anything high impact because it hurts her knees... but the bounce bounce bounce is GREAT for her. I love it too.
Just an idea. :)

There's a machine called the Gazelle that let's you run without any impact on the legs. I have it and it's probably one of the least painful ways of doing cardio (I have bad knees too). Make sure you find a good deal for it and don't spend over $100. I got mine for about $75 at GNC. Hope that helps!

[QUOTE=Wombat82;380435]Some high reps with light weights to build muscle will help alot.
High reps and low weight will NOT build muscle!
High reps and low weight will build muscle indurance.
Go with as much weight that will allow you to do 5-6 reps max.
Do basic exercises like;
Bench Press
Barbell Rows
Deadlifts
Overhead Press (barbell or dumbell)
