I'm a grazer so I don't schedule a dinner but I do sequence my small grazing meals throughout my day. Daily I get up and have a fresh made juice followed by more and more juice until I feel like something solid and then I like bananas usually eaten 1 or 2 at a time for a few meals. After that its usually wide open and seems to go a different direction every day depending on what I have on hand and what my body signals for. Typically mid day is a time when I like to eat whole foods like grapes and mangoes etc. Late in my day is usually salads and seeds. I keep it simple and easy with juices and fruits early in my day and more solid foods late in my day. My day is more of a hand to mouth affair.

My day is more of a hand to mouth affair.

I'll second that. The past few days it's been green smoothies, whole fruits (alot of bananas, which I'm craving) and some seeds, avocado, olives...

right now I'm having banana/cacao ice cream. Yum. :) But I don't think of my food intake in terms of meals anymore, really.

But I don't think of my food intake in terms of meals anymore, really.Yeah, I don't think my grazing style of eating would qualify as a meal either because they are typically eaten in small amounts and with little preparation.

i just read my post and realized it sort of looks like I might be addressing you, but I meant to be addressing rawererin. :)

As I have been at this awhile I am finding that what I wanted for dinner now is very different from when I was beginning. In the beginning I ate a lot of "recipes", now I eat more like EZrider & RawSweetie.

I do however always have a selection of 2-4 raw dressings made up, 2 pates/nut cheeses, and 1-2 sauces like a raw mayo/aioli, a marinara etc. on hand. With these I then have a lot of choices.

This blog and her site have MANY AWSOME simple dinner ideas, look at back pages!

how do you know you are getting enough calories..just a thought

for me, that type of concern is ancient history. i simply pay close attention to how my body feels and reacts to things, eat when im hungry, and i feel great. i don't like monitoring or obsessing over my calorie intake, i feel better, physically and mentally when i don't.

as far as what i eat for dinner, it's usually pretty light because im not usually too hungry in the evenings and i don't like to be bogged down for my evening yoga practice. so, it's usually simple salads.

It's good question a lot of persons new to raw have. With raw calories are really a non issue; certainly there are exceptions but on the whole the great thing about raw is as I said not somthing we worry over - and for that among many other reasons it's so very freeing. . .Weeeeee!:p .

You will be working toward understanding what your body tells you and acting on it. I mean really listening. In the beginning it helps to think in terms of sweet/salty, crunchy/creamy, heavy/light. Instead of just "I'm hungry". Think of it as learning a new language.

Yesterday my day consisted of green smoothie and salads. Today my body wanted heavier so I've had porrage and banana nut mylk and sprouted tamari seeds.

As long as you are eating raw, the quantity is set by YOU not some chart! In the last four months I have not even thought the word "calorie" and I have lost 50!lbs. All the while eating lasagna, cakes, pies, salads, soups & smoothies. I am now at a point where my craving gone and I require very little food.

If you have weight to loose, you will. If you are under weight your body will gain and level off at your bodies best number.

As you know this site is run by Alissa Cohen Living on Live Food and I cannot recommend her book and DVD enough. She has ALL the answers!

Cheers,

EPPP

so then you don't feel the need to have something structured and "dinner like" aka the SAD way (meat & potatoes for dinner, pancakes for breakfast)?

My own experience, Rawererin, is that after many years of eating simpler and simpler all-raw foods - I know what works. My goals NECESSITATE feeling light....and having the right fuel. The sight and taste of JUST a pineapple for dinner...when I bring all my mind to it (or even just part of it! Ha! ha!) is VERY appealing to me. The big 'make or break' for most people is the social aspects....and not the actual mechanics or nutrition of eating well. That is just a matter of setting small goals (with timetables) and keeping them. But setting one's 'dignity boundaries'....and keeping them....and providing a good example with respect to food......and doing nothing that would "cause one's brother to stumble" is a great challenge.

-There is a great power...in just whipping out with an apple....and silently munching....when everyone else is eating poorly at Applebees! Ha! ha!

Since I am still cooking for others in my household. I make a salad bar every night (we are 6 people) with new additions (pate, marinated veggies, new dressings, nuts, seeds, etc). So EVERYONE eats a large salad then a few others have a little something cooked (I always keep it simple because I don't like to mess around with it too much). I find myself trying recipes during the day if I want them or adding them to the salad bar.

I did feel the need to mirror a cooked diet at first...but before raw I was eating fruit for breakfast anyway and no meat or potatoes as I was always vegetarian and never really went for potatoes. So I would have fruit or smoothies in the morning as always, bring a prepared salad for lunch (I used to bring ones with cooked lentils, vegan cheeze and stuff but switched to sprouted lentils and ditched the cheeze) and make some kind of prepared raw meal for dinner. One I had a lot before I got my dehydrator was zucchini 'pasta'. I wish I had gotten my dehydrator when I first went raw, as by the time I got it, I was already eating more simply. Now I make dehydrated meals like raw pizza, fajitas, etc. maybe once a week, normally for a Friday night in with a movie :D

I'm more of a grazer, and it now seems strange to me that people will wait around while they're hungry and then sit down and stuff themselves silly. I eat when I'm hungry and rarely have a whole "meal." If I do, it's usually at lunchtime, since I like to eat more in the middle of the day than at the end of the day. Lately my dinners have been cashews and kombucha, but I need to vary it soon or I'll get bored. I usually end up snacking on something between 3 and 4pm, so I'm not that hungry by "dinner time" and a handful of nuts will hold me. My afternoon snack is usually fruit or veggies with hummus or something like that.

I adore the mock tuna salad (except I don't like tuna and to me it tastes like chicken salad, which I sorely miss, so that's what I call it instead), and make that at least once a week. So easy and simple, walnuts, celery, red bell pepper, green onion, a little salt (very little, the celery makes it taste salty already).

I'll eat this by itself with a spoon, or stuffed into peppers, or celery, or piled on romaine leaves, or spooned into a hollowed out cucumber with sprouts and olives like a gorilla sandwich. It's wonderful, it is!
