is it possible to combat S.A.D thru a window? It's been SO cold and blustery that dd and I haven't been outside much. I was wondering if we played on the sunporch if that would be enough to get our Vit D.

Unfortunately I am pretty sure you can't get Vitamin D thru a window because UV light can't pass thru windows. I wish it would my desk at work is right next to a window.

yeah, I don't think it will work through a window. It has been really cold and cloudy here too. I am sooooo craving some sunshine!

Try going to a tanner once every week or two.

No, definitely not. In fact, because you (and I!) are in New England, we don't get enough strong sun enough months out of the year. Apparently, many NE'ers are Vit. D deficient. It was the *first* suggestion my new doctor made to me, in terms of supplementing what I'm doing now.
I feel a difference in 6 weeks of taking it! This winter has been easier in terms of SAD than others, despite other challenging situations happening. I don't feel that grey weather blues thing...

Hi Wendi,
I'm taking 400mg. in my multi, which is the standard, and I also take 1000mg. more in a whole foods supplement from DailyFoods. I think I could take 2000mg. and be just fine, but I'm not made of $$, so I'm sticking to 1000mg plus the multi. The findings suggest we need AT LEAST that daily. There is a strong link between cancer and Vit. D deficiency that is getting alot of attention right now.
Hope that helps!

Transparent fused silica “quartz” glass allows transmission of ultraviolet light, and is used for this reason, but it is expensive.

I don't remember where I read it but it is supposed to help (tanners that is). I believe it was an article about SAD. If you can get ahold of the Feb/March 2008 issue of Mother Earth News magazine there is a great article on Vitamin D. It says ' If you're young, fair, scantily clad and near the equator, 10 to 15 minutes of peak sunshine produces 20,000 IUs.' It then goes on to say that someone who is dark skinned requires 10 times that exposure for the same results. It mentions that sunscreens block the UVB rays that produces the Vitamin D stimulation in the skin. As far as foods go, Shiitake mushrooms dried with their gills up facing the sun have a whopping 46,000 IU of vitamin D per 100 grams! Even when dried with the gills down (in the sun) they contain 21,400 IUs per 100 grams. This was information taken from Paul Stamets' book, Mycelium Running. Cod liver oil, oily fish like salmon, sardines and mackerel, eggs and fortified milk, soy milk and orange juice also contain vitamin D but in much smaller amounts. Anyways if you would like to read the whole article you may still be able to get a copy at the news stands or at your local library.
Hope this helps.
Andy
