I just wanted to share my happiness at finding young coconuts after wanting to try them for years! :D
They were in my local supermarket, called coco verde (still in the green shell which I understand is better than the white ones which have been treated?) I only got one to try but will be going back later today for more.
I'm not sure how much they cost elsewhere, but they were only £1 ($2) which I'm thrilled about since I'd expected them to be really expensive and I also thought I'd need a trip in to London to try and hunt down some of these exotic foods.
I've seen so many recipes that need young coconuts. Now I just have to decide what to make first. :)

Yay Claire! I'm so happy for you! And how wonderful to find the Green Ones....I wish I could find those here! .....I love simply to hack it open with a meat cleaver {very carefully of course! I think you can google on how to open them}, pour the water in a blender, then scoop the meat out and put in the blender too...I add a dash of vanilla and sometimes some ice...blend till frothy....ummmm soooo goood! Esp. good after exercise...........I love 'em! :D

Make RFRW vanilla or coconut ice cream!!! I bought my first young coconut at the weekend and have the ice cream freezing now, it tastes LUSH! I can post the recipe if you want.

Thanks for the tip off, I bought one for 5.99 in whole foods in Kensington! I will definitely be going to Tesco's next time...

Yes it was Tesco :D
I do have RFRW thanks. Most of the coconut recipes I want to try are from that book. Will start with the ice cream!

The ice cream is so good seriously. I don't have an ice cream maker so I just put it in the freezer until it was a bit frozen, then whisked it up with a hand whisk, then put it back, and repeated it every couple of hours. Its sooo creamy and easy to scoop. I gave some to my parents and they said it was better than dairy ice cream :)
