Hello Coconutters!
This has come up many times over the years on this board so I thought I would do thread just clarify.
Most Coconut oil/butter does have a coconut taste and smell; not bad just coconutty.
www.omeganutrition.com here in Wa. make two types - both organic raw, I called - labled organic virgin coconut oil and the second just organic coconut oil.
The Organic Virgin Coconut Oil does have the taste & smell described above.
The Organic Coconut Oil they describe it is neutral. No smell or taste. This is great for those of us - like me - who do not care for the coconut flavour in some of our recipes and desserts.
In the book I Am Grateful she refers to using a neutral coconut oil.
Also coconut cream is not coconut oil. It is the oil blended with coconut solids.
Yes, coconut oil/butter is a solid white and when melted runs clear.
I hope this helps!
Cheers,
EPPP

It does help because I think that the brownie frosting would have better flavor with the coconut oil flavor. I will look for the regular coconut oil and not the virgin for some of my recipes. Thankies;)

Are you familiar with that theory that if something is good for us it'll taste good to us? Interesting, huh? I would think vice-versa too. I think it's a natural hygiene theory. But I've grown to like seaweed and used to hate it......

I don't dislike coconut :o ; actually I really like it. It's just that so many recipes call for coconut oil and I dont always want everything I make to taste of coconut! :p
I do agree with your point about liking items that are good for you. There are several items I love now that I could not tollerate when I first started.

eachpeachpearplum- the centrifugedcoconut oil i get from wildernessfamilynaturals is a pretty bland taste. it does have a slight coconut taste, but not strong at all. i have used it in lots of recipes and have not had any problems with it tasting like coconut. i know that they also make other types of coconut oil, you should check out their site, if you want. they sell a small sample (probably like 2 oz.or something) for $3 plus shipping. so at least you can try a small amount for cheap before you make the full commitment.

Thanks for the information. I like a lot of my recipes to taste like coconut, but not all of them. I wasn't able to find an oil that was unscented, now at least I know of one.

I am so upset. I have been using the 100% organic Coconut Oil from Omega Nutrition and I just found out that it is NOT Raw. Only their Virgin one is Raw. I like it because it doesn't have the strong flavor of the other ones I tried. Are there any other ones that are MILD and RAW??

I called them yesterday to order more and the woman said it is not raw. To get the fragrance out, it has to be heated much higher than for raw. The virgin one is raw. That makes me mad as I spoke to a guy the last time & he said it was raw. I use coconut oil A LOT and I'm upset at this.
If you call, could you let us know what they say? :-)

Hi GUys,
Try "Tropical Traditions". I believe all of thier coconuts are organic and raw including the Exspellor Pressed which is the one without the coconut smell...
They may heat the Exspellor Pressed but if you go to the website......They can tell you. Thanks

I don't see how a coconut oil could not smell like coconut, unless it has been processed too much.
