View Full Version : I bought a coconut! Now What???

This probably sounds incredibly lame, but I just bought my first young thai coconut and I have no idea what to do with it! Can I just cut it open and eat it like I would a melon? Should I juice it? Blend it? I keep picturing Alissa in her jacuzzi with a straw sticking out of hers...how'd she get the straw in there?? Does that really work??  What do you all do with your coconuts?

Here's a video of someone opening a young coconut:
I like to put the young coconut juice and pulp into the blender and blend smooth for a delicious drink.

I like to make two good sized smoothies with mine. It makes them extra smooth and creamy....also adds a bit of a different tast.

I usually put the water and meat and add mango or pineapple and make great smoothies :)
i hack at it. then, i drink all the juice & scoop out the meat. it's so delicious as it is. :p it's one of the best fast foods, if you're really good at the hacking.

Opening the coconut is very easy once you get the hang of it! And fun!!!:D
I put the water and meat in the VM and blend till very smooth...add a squirt of agave and a dash of vanilla, blend.....I use this over rawnola...delicious!! If it is really thick, I just eat it with a spoon~ Yum!!!!

As above mentioned - to me, the most satisfying way to eat is:
Open, pour water into vitamix, scoop meat into vitamix.
Add vanilla, cacao and some cinnamon, along with a tad of salt and ice, and blend away. It's the best thing EVER. I swear, if I had to pick one food to live on....coconut shakes. THE BEST.

WOW! I think I found my new favorite thing! I just want to make sure that I've done it correctly. I cut off the top like in the video and opened up the nut. I poured the water into the blender and scraped all the white coconut fat in to the blender as well...I just tossed the rest...the outside of the coconut is just trash right? It seemed to fibrous to do anything with. Two more questions: Is the water in the nut "coconut milk" ? And is the white yogurt textured stuff, coconut "meat"? Just want to know for future recipes.
Well, whatever they are I put the water and meat into the blender with frozen pineapple, fresh oj and a dash of agave and it tasted like an orange julies! So dang good!
