I'm wondering which works the best that I don't have to spend a ton of money on. :)

thanks!

My advice is to get a good dehydrator now, like the Excalibur. If you buy a cheaper one now you will want to get a better one later. Excalibur are having January sales at the moment and I think you can get a 4-tray for $199...

Finley8,

I personally use the 9 tray Excalibur with the timer but it's not cheap but works amazingly well and came with a 10 year warranty.

From this site though I've heard the American Harvest is good as well and it offers a timer. It's a circular type.

I've got a Nesco that cost about $50. I don't use it very often, maybe once or twice a month, so I didn't want to invest in an Excalibur or something that pricey. Mine works great and didn't cost an arm and a leg. It doesn't have a timer, but I bought one of those cheap plug in timers (that you use for lamps and stuff), and that works really well.

I have the Excalibur 4 tray and NEED the 9 tray but waiting for Alissa's to come out. I know I will still use my 4 try even when I get a bigger one!

I strongly suggest you do a search as this query comes up every few months so there is tonnes of info her on the boards to help with your research!

Cheers,

EPPP

I have the Nesco and it is fine for me. I don't have a lot of space for one and I don't use it that often. I did buy extra trays and sheets for it.

4 tray for $199? what currency is that? Last time I checked the 9 tray was below $199, I mais my 9 tray around $160-170, that's the one with built in timer. I highly recommend the 9 tray, I live alone and often gave 7-8 trays full.

The 9 tray excalibur can be had new for below $200 on ebay (my $160-70 deal was since I got a blemished model, which I never could find the blemish).

I have the 9 tray Excalibur and just LUV IT . I wouldn't even consider anything smaller . For those of you useing a round dehydrator with or without a timer is fine , but it's the TEMPERATURE thats most important .

I bought my Excalibur 4 tray here:
http://www.rawveganbooks.com/index.php?cPath=316_322
It cost $109.95 and they have the Teflex sheets too for $6.50.It's the least expensive place I found online.
I think I will need a bigger one soon though.I used to love to bake and I will need to make lots of cookies and dessert stuff using the dehydrator.
I cannot survive without something chocolatey or sweet. That's my curse.

You've had some good advice there. In the meantime I have to say that I'm still managing to use my fan oven successfully, with the aid of an oven thermometer which i keep permanently in it. Not ideal and I do want to get a dehydrator eventually, but it does turn out wonderful results -- crisp crackers and cookies, great entrees. I haven't found one thing that didn't work in it so I can recommend it until your dehydrator arrives.
