So I was reading about eating a fruit based diet, and I am getting mixed information here. I like fruit alot and sometimes I feel like I could be more of a Fruitarian but what worries me is the fact that some info informs people that too much fruit causes diabetes? Is this true? If you eat a fruit diet that you can get diabetes from the natural sugar?

I like my vegetables and salads but I like to eat a whole pineapple or 3 mangoes and bananas in a bowl. I love fruit. I am scared I will get diabetes. I hope somebody here can debunk that theory and let me know because I still have doubts about this. I mean it's natural sugar and it's fruit it's raw and it's healthy.

Fruit doesn't cause diabetes. Neither does sugar. But if you HAVE diabetes, you have to watch the amount of carbs you eat.

There is so much information and often misinformation flying around the net. My understnading is that processed "un-natural" sugars are processed by the body in much different ways than the sugar in fruit which is accomanied by the fruits fiber and other minerals so the body knows what to do with it.
I love fruit too~

no fruit certainly DOES NOT cause diabetes!!

If you eat too much fat then that is a problem.
Fat stops the inslulin escorting sugar molecules out of the blood stream.

We NEED sugar - Carbohydrates. Without this we could not function.

Read the 80/10/10 diet by Dr Douglas Graham to learn more about how fat hinders this apsorption.

I agree with the above posts. Many fruits are actually quite low on the glycemic index, and are absorbed into the body in a very slow/healthy manner. I do not think (my opinion) that you are going to get or exacerbate diabetes from eating fresh fruits & vegetables. Just my thoughts.

-If you are concerned, then simply monitor your blood sugar before and after mono-meals of a given fruit to see how they affect you. This is possible and practical - don't you think?

I have type 2 diabetes well had...(depends on if you believe I am cured or just controlled) Since going raw I eat tons of fruit and my sugar is lower than it has ever been. I have even had to be more careful about it going too low. I experienced this the last time I was raw and I have again since going raw 4 days ago. I wouldn't worry about the fruit, but if you do monitor your blood sugar as Dave suggested above. Enjoy! ;)

Ditto....

We went on a tour the other day where a local guy was walking around teaching "nutrition" and how to read labels. He said the same stupid thing about fruit ~ do not drink a lot of smoothies because of the fruit sugar, etc. AND, get protein from meat. He didn't much care for me telling him (and them) that leafy greens contain more assimilable protein.

I am so thankful you asked this question about fruit. I was worried about the same thing and I can now enjoy the energy I get from fruit and veggie smoothies without worrying about the fruit making me fatter or making me sick. boxerfamily- your answer was so reassuring. Many thanks to all of you who share your wealth of knowledge and experience on this board.:D

It seems as absurd to me as how the South Beach Diet has folks convinced that carrots are bad bad bad for you and will get you fat.

Diabetes is more about glycemic index than it is actual "sugar"--and the body will digest fruit sugar differently from table sugar.

And as far as I know--my mother in law doesn't eat much fruit..it was the candies and sweets and processed foods that caused her type II diabetes.

I have had very good experience eating fruit, however a friend of mine who has type 1 diabetes has to watch her fruit very carefully. I just thought I should share this because everyone is different. If your body starts showing signs of high bloood sugar (intense thirst, frequent urination, tiredness etc) then you should monitor which foods may be causing your body to react this way. I reiterate Fruit does not cause diabetes:p

I just have to chime in here as I was prediabetic and my blood sugar level was consistently between 105 and 110! Since really beginning this diet and not eating any meat except for 2 ounces of salmon and about 2 ounces of chicken, I have had no meats at all in the past 3 months! When I had my last blood test to see how things were going my glucose levels had dropped to 93! AND I have dates every day as a snack or as part of my other meals!

Hope this reassures you that fruit does not cause diabetes! Dates and figs are the highest on the glycemic scale and right up there with sugar! Now, I am not so sure that I could say that if I were to be eating lots of sugar-added foods. I do know that eliminating meat and dairy is what helped the most with the blood sugar issue for me.

Is your friend 100% raw? To me, that makes a difference as well.

I know a few of us have had candida problems and when 100%, can eat fruit with no problem. When not, fruit becomes a problem.

No, my friend is not 100%. That may be part of her problem.

Eating fruit WILL NOT CAUSE DIABETES. Fruit is our natural food. Please don't worry about eating too much fruit. It is impossible. :-) Well I guess you could really overdo it if you really tried, but I think it would be hard. :-)

I am nearly 100% fruitarian and know of many others who are as well and are thriving. I feel best eating mostly fruit and many, many others do too.

Blessings,

nothing you eat will cause diabetes. i have diabetes and it is a disease... the same as other diseases... it is caused by your bodies inability to process the sugars and carbs it takes in. the sugars and carbs do not cause diabetes.

since going raw... releasing all the excess weight i have... phht, i don't even have a concern about my blood sugars anymore!!!

and i eat a LOT of fruit!

well I am glad that the diabetes theory is complete trash. I have been eating loads of pineapple. I love cutting into a whole spiky pineapple then the smell is released like an air freshener. I also eat loads of grapefruits. I love those too. I think I am leaning towards more Fruitarian than a regular raw vegan. I don't like too many vegetables just very selective but fruits are so yummy I can eat them and never get bored or tired with them.

I am diabetic already and have been eating tons of fruit since I have been raw. My sugar readings are now in the 90's average and sometimes on the low side even though I eat tons of fruit. I am so excited.
