When I opened my young coconut this morning I was surprised to find that it was purple inside. (A nice shade of lavendar actually) It tasted fine so I used it in my Smoothie (Young coconut meat and milk, mango, pineapple, spinach) YUM! Anyone else experience odd colored coconuts???
Thanks:p

When they are purple, they are getting old. You can return them to the store. I don't think they'll always make you sick, but just to be safe next time, I'd exchange it.

NO NO NO NO NO NO NO !!!! A Purple coconut (with thin flesh) is a YOUNG coconut! They are like precious jewels to experience, as long as it wasn't thick and purple, consider yourself blessed! Every time I open one of these, it's like a treasure, and the juice is the MOST INCREDIBLE EVER...

Yes, I agree with rawkchicster! The rotten ones are greyish inside. Coconuts that have gotten too old would have a thick inside.
There are two theories going on this board - one says the purplish/pink coconuts are bad and the other says they are very young coconuts. I have read some books that say these are the really young ones. It makes sense to me because the purplish/pink one are always have very thin meat inside - sometimes only a few tablespoons worth. I have gone through about 50-60 coconuts since I started going raw in June and I never came across a coconut with thick purplish flesh; it is always thin. If they were bad you would be able to tell by the taste.
I eat the young Thai coconuts almost everyday and I have only come across a couple that were bad upon opening. Sometimes I left them out of the refrigerator too long and they began to ferment - not good either.
The best way to tell is by taste - a bad coconut would be obvious by a bad smell or taste. Although with the ones that have began to ferment, but haven't gone completely bad, it's a little harder to tell. Also, the really young coconuts don't have as strong as a coconut taste as the ones that have ripened more, but they still taste good. Enjoy them!

It had very thin flesh, hardly any at all, but tons of milk. The smoothie was delicious so I was pretty sure it wasn't bad. We didn't even have to add any water because there was so much milk. YAY!

Hope you are all happy, but now I'm going to have to go get some Thai Coconuts! LOL :D haven't had one in the house in weeks and I love them. They are so much better than any other milk I've ever had...I could really live on them if I could get more than 4 at a time.

They are delicious! :p There is nothing like fresh coconut water; I use it almost every day in my green smoothies. The young Thai coconuts are always filled with coconut water, unlike the harder dark brown ones. Just make sure they stay chilled, or they will start to ferment. I speak from experience. They do take up a lot of room in a refrigerator.

I like to put the young coconut juice and "meat" into the VM and blend until smooth, its delicious. The older coconuts are difficult to get the "meat" out and also they have little or no juice. The really Young ones (pink ~ light purple) don't have as sweet a coconut taste and the "meat" is thin. I prefer a young coconut that is not to young and not to old. The first thing I do when I open a young coconut is to taste the juice and if it dosn't pass the taste test (only happened once) I can save time and effort by trashing it and getting another. The next thing I do is drain the juice and then I go after the "meat" and last I blend and drink. I just love blended young coconuts. :)

EZRider, this has been my experience, except every young Thai coconut I've opened has always had it's water. Odd, I never came across a Thai one with no water. Although, I have found the older brown ones with no husk usually don't have water - if you can crack it open in the first place. It does seem as the coconut grows older it gains a thicker inside and the coconut water will have a much stronger coconut flavor. :p
Out of 60 coconuts or so I've opened only 1 was rotten, but some had began to ferment, usually because I left them out of refrigeration for several days.
