hi. I am skater gus . I'm 10. I'm Zaphirah's son. I was wondering if you would let your kids tell me about new recipes that they know and maybe tell me what raw at school is like. I'd like to get to know other raw kids.
(hi! this is Zaphirah. I'm typing this for ds. He's really interested in finding other raw kids out there. :) )

My kids aren't raw..but they loved when I brought home a raw friends "recipe" for "coconut mixture" (what they called it). They just couldn't get enough of it.
I don't know the ratio to get it to the consistency that my friend did..but essentially it is raw coconut shreds with raw agave nectar. I compare it to the inside of an almond joy. YUM--OH!!!
I do think the kiddos od'd on it though....b/c after a while, they didn't ask for it any more. :(
My kids are only 7 and 4, but they like to ummm...create recipes out of berries and stuff. My daughter created strawberry mush---which makes an excellent spread on maybe some raw bread if you have it...or raw crackers....or just by it self. She mashes it by hand and is so proud of this creation.
They also like the banana balls from glaser organic farms. But I have no idea how they make it. :( I wish I did--it would be a lot cheaper.
This is the info from their website:
Tropical and sweet, soft and delicious. These
hand made delights are rolled in freshly ground
almonds and will satisfy the most discriminating
sweet tooth.
All Raw Certified Organic Ingredients:
apple, bananas, medjool dates, walnuts, almonds, raisins, organic spices. 6 oz. package contains 9 to 10 individual hand-made Banana Balls.
Maybe your mom can figure it out. :) They are pretty solid and dense once dried....but they still have some moistness to them so when you bite into them--you can taste on the flavors and it doesn't crunch at all.

Hi SkaterGus! I'm 15 and raw. For me, raw at school isn't much of a challenge. My school has a salad bar, so I can have a giant, delicious salad. I also bring raw snacks from home, like Lara Bars or fruit. I hope that answers your question, and you have a really cool mom!

momma-rawma: thanks for the ideas. I have a recipe that your kids might like. There called Gus's Rawlmond Joys. I came up with them and my mom hepled me make them. Here is the recipe:
Gus's Rawlmond Joys
1/2 c of raisins
1/2 c of shredded coconut
1 T cacao
1/3 coconut oil
agave to taste
First blend the raisins in the FP. add oil and shredded coconut. mix. Add cacao and agave. Shape into small bars and add an almond on top. You can eat them right away, but they are better if you can wait and refrigerate them for 30 min or more. enjoy! (makes about 12 bars)

kaleidoscopeeys: I don't have a salad bar at school but I like salad and I like Lara bars too. They are my favorite. I was just wondering what do people say when they see your raw food? I get teased even for things that are not raw, but are health food.

Hey Gus! I'm 16 so I guess I'm a big kid. I like bringing fruit to school like apples and bananas. No-one finds that weird as a lot of people bring fruit to school. I also bring salad in plastic containers. I keep the dressing in a little bottle so the salad doesn't go soggy! I bring Larabars too sometimes. If people ask me what they are I offer them some and they are surprised at how yummy it is!
If people tease you you should tell them they may be laughing now but they won't be when they're old and fat and ill you are as healthy as ever!

Hey Skater Gus!
When I was a vegetarian kid, there weren't too many of us around. In fact, I was the only vegetarian in my entire school for a while, until some of my friends joined me. But what I found was that if I stuck to the simple premise that I was eating what I wanted to and didn't care what everyone else was eating (I wasn't judgemental or preachy) nobody really cared - they were mostly curious if anything. A lot of times kids will say mean things when they don't understand something or feel threatened. So the kids who are teasing you for your food choices probably realize that their own choices aren't so great but they aren't strong enough (like you are) to eat differently, in a way that makes their bodies work right and feel good.
You know, now I'm grown up and work in an office, it's pretty much the same exact deal. If you talk about your own diet, the first thing people do is compare it to their own - and a lot of times they will get pretty darn defensive. That is unfortunate, but there are also those who are really interested and even if they don't change their diet, they become more aware of the choices they have - which is great! I only talk about what I'm eating or the way I eat when people ask.
Your recipe sounds really great! I'm going to try it.
