So far I am on a limited budget and the other day I went to Kroger and made my grocery list very early. Well the things on there are mostly greens and vegetables with seeds and nut toppings for my salad. So my question is will I get enough fats in my diet by using the seeds on my salad? Or do I have to eat an avocado and a handful of raw organic nuts to get my fats? I am not too fond of avocado I dislike the taste, I will only eat avocado if I can make a dip for chips but there are no chips in the diet.

My friend who made the salad with itchy Brocolli Raab (lol) also recommended that I use 100% pure fish oil because OMEGA-3 is good for the brain and it's a good fat for me to function correctly? Anybody have any pros and cons for fish oil? I already bought some since she recommended the fish oil the other day. I haven't started taking the fish oil. She tells me the OMEGA-3 is good for your skin and good for inflammatory injuries or issues. She is partially raw since she eats an Asian diet of foods and is a vegetarian.

Should I also just test this by not eating any fats or oils with anything for a week? Or just start taking the fish oil and eating more seeds and nuts? Your advice is greatly appreciated.

well i wouldn't do fish oil myself... instead i use extra virgin olive oil, avocados (you can mix it up to cover your salad) and nuts/seeds in my meals.

remember... you can make a raw salad dressing and there's some healthy fats as well.

oh and then desserts... mmmm.... desserts. those contain healthy fats.

Does the coconut oil and olive oil have healthy amounts of OMEGA-3 fatty acids?

i just started using udo's oil blend, it has all the omegas. (3, 6, and 9) they are all important to have in the diet. i also like it because it is not made from fish, i am allergic to fish so i can't have anything that has fish in it. it is also made at low temperatures. it is a really good oil and i use 1 tablespoon mixed in with green smoothies becasue the taste is a bit strong for my liking. it's made from Flax oil, sunflower oil, sesame oil, coconut oil, evening primrose oil, soy lecithin, rice bran and germ oils, oat bran and germ oils, tocotrienols. i bought mine from vitacost.com because it seemed to be the cheapest and i have boought from them in the past and they are a good company. hope this helps.

no coconut oil does not contain any omegas. ( if there is any amount of them they are so trace it wouldn't really matter). but i do consume that myself as well, i take 1 tablespoon mixed with water and some stevia 2 times a day. i also take the udo's oil blend that i just wrote about. i know that seems like a lot of fat, maybe, but it has been working for me so i'm sticking with it.

If you just grind flax seeds in a coffee grinder and add them to smoothies or whatever else, they're great for getting your omega's in.

Do you have a dehydrator? No worries if you don't, but if you do, flax crackers are REALLY easy to make and are great for using like chips and dip with stuff like guacamole.

P.S. My mom HATED avocados until she went raw. Now they're her new best friends! You never know what will change for you...

You can use ground flax seeds OR chia seeds which are great for you and both a very good source of omega 3 oils. I make an awesome chocolate pudding with avocados which is amazing.....as for guac and chips...make flax crackers or raw nacho chips...a delicious alternative to "chips". I think fats are a very important part of the raw lifestyle. A hand full of almonds or brazil nuts or a glass of almond mylk is good too~

Well it has omega-3, but so does flax seed oil.

Actually, we had a fish oil scandal here in Norway, it seems the oil was mixed with industrial oil and also exposed to vermin, that is to say it's not fit for human consumption even if you're an omnivore. Most fish oil in America comes from Norwegian firm Moller, called Carlson in the US.

Read about it here: http://www.aftenposten.no/english/local/article2129080.ece

Through this pipe, clogged by dried fat and dirt, ran cod liver oil between production tanks.

Inspectors also found open crates of cod liver, which they called "a party for seagulls" that both ate from them and defecated in the area.

First of all, being a raw VEGAN (or beegan as some folk here call it because many of us still eat honey) board, some here MAY be including fish oil yet, it's not advocated here.

Having said that, if you wish to eat something that is loaded with mercury and ummm, sea gull defecation....

I HAD asthma and eliminated it by eliminating wheat and dairy and also finding out what I was doing to myself mentally and emotionally to create it.

Everything you could possibly get by adding the products of dead animals you can get from eating raw fruit, veggies, seeds, nuts and greens.

My feeling is, if you can afford fish oil, you can afford nuts and seeds. Do you know you can make lemon pie and/or key lime pie with avocados? You wouldn't even know you were eating avos.

I am officially tossing my Nature Made fish oil or returning for my money which seems better. That's just gross. So then I guess it's flax seed for me. Also what about Flax Seed oil in supplement form? Are those bad too?

I wish this wasn't the case, but our bodies process the Omega 3s from fish oils more readily than the Omega 3s from flax (there is a conversion process with the flax that isn't necessary with the fish.) Even though fish oil has proven health benefits, it is still a difficult thing to recommend because many companies are NOT reputable when it comes to their fishing practices, product storage, distillation to remove heavy metals, etc. and fish oil is also problematic to me because I am vegan and choose not to consume animal products. Taking fish oil isn't a horrible choice for your health AS LONG AS you do your homework concerning the integrity of the company you're buying from.

All this said....I still wouldn't take it.
I don't want dead animals in my body.

Walnuts are an AMAZING source of omegas as is hemp oil. Evening primrose was mentioned as well... another good source. My feelings are, if I wouldn't eat it in it's natural state it isn't anymore appetizing in a pill. Also, fish oil comes from fish liver and the liver is the "filter" of the body. Blech.

I used to hate avocados too (wouldn't even eat guacamole on chips when I was SAD, and that's saying something, since chips were a staple!). Now I eat them almost every day. My favorite is to whip some avocado, salt, and lime juice together, then eat it on jicama. Soooo yummy. Or I put Alissa's marinara sauce on raw onion bread with slices of avocado on top (again, I salt them, usually with himalayan salt). Really tasty. Or there are a lot of dessert recipes that call for avocado where you won't taste it at all, it will just make things creamy.

You can buy flax seed oil if you're concerned about omegas. Just make sure to get the cold pressed kind. Also, if you're worried about getting enough fat, you may want to go to www.fitday.com and enter in a couple of days' worth of your food intake. I did that when I first went raw, and I was surprised to see that I was getting plenty of fat, even before adding in avocados. Of course, fat doesn't make up 90% of my daily intake, like it did when I was eating SAD!
