View Full Version : Cigarette Smoke
I went out to a bar with my husband tonight to watch him do Karokee and the bar was filled with smoke so thick you could barely breathe. I had to leave early because I came down with a migraine headache and then felt physically ill like I might have to pass out or throw up. Literally I can't remember feeling this sick over cigarette smoke. My friend thought I might be overly sensative because of my diet and all the detox I have been through. Has anyone else ever experienced this. I am so ill right now - I need to go and lay down. Luckily my friend took me home early.

Eww....Im sorry! I'm really sensitive to cigarette smoke too. Allergic, actually. It actually is possible to be allergic to cigarette smoke w/o having asthma, maybe you should look into it.

I feel your pain. My mom smokes :( and since I have spent a few years not living with her I can't even stand it be in the same room when she is smoking. It seems to just be getting worse since I have been raw. I am living with her right now and it irritates my throat even when she smokes in her room with the door closed...the burning taste of the smoke in my throat when I wake up sends me into an irrational rage. I don't know how handled it when I was a kid and around it ALL the time.

HI, I have this problem also.
Happily though, a lot of cities are making it against the law to smoke inside restaurants and bars.

Yep Morn... it's our LIFEstyle of vibrant foods and keeping our bodies healthy and cleared of crap and poisons.
since I stopped smoking -- I have noticed in the last few months - the neighbor that lives below us -- (on a lower lot) he will come and stand under OUR BEDROOM WINDOW when it's raining and smoke.... OMG..... I got so sick the other night - dh had to go out there and tell him to go somewhere else to smoke...
the guy was complaining that it was raining and he couldn't smoke in his house and he didn't have an eve to stand under so - that's why he's standing under OURS  .... dh told him --- TOO BAD  ... the smoke is going right into our bedroom... go stink up your wifes bedroom instead!!
I had a horrible headache, I was dizzy and nauseas -- and I felt like everything in the bedroom stunk .... yuck...
I'm sorry you feel so bad... drink lots of water - try to get your bowels moving -- get those toxins out of you. Unfortuantely - if you breathed enough of it - you might smell it for a day or two as you are exercising... it will pass though. But some of it you will need to 'sweat out of you'...

Both my husband and I are highly sensitive to cigarette smoke, I live in a condo, and the neighbor across the hall smokes, and sometimes we can smell is seeping under our door, ugh. Now we have a towel that we tuck under the door to keep the smell out, it's such an awful habit!

I know how you feel. I loath cigarette smoke and I dont understand why peope smoke anymore with all the information we have, especially young people.
Luckily, like 7 years ago, California made it illegal to smoke in restuarants and bars, incuding bowling alleys, of course that doesnt mean they cant hang the doors open and let it all waft inside!

I have noticed that since I have gone all raw my senses have woken up. My sense of hearing is better and I turn volumes down now instead of up. I even like a quiet room now. My vision seems to be sharper with better focus and the colors are more vivid. My sense of smell is greatly enhanced. And my sense of taste has undergone a major enhancement. So I'm not surprised by your sensitivity to cigarette smoke. I really appreciate clean air now, especially the air just after a good rain, I can feel it energize my body with each deep breath I take.
I don't think it's being over sensative, I think it's that others are over-used ot it, THAT'S the problem. ;)
Makes me sick too.

I would have felt the way you do but here in Ontario it is no longer legal to smoke inside any building and in some cases you have to be completely off the property so many ft in order to smoke. It will now soon be illegal to even smoke in the car and home with kids present. Because of the law changes I haven't been exposed to smoke but last time I was I could barely breathe. :(
Same here in Massachusetts, Trinity. I think it changed in FL too and a bunch of other places in the last few years. According to the law, no smoking at all inside any restaurant or bar and x feet in front of a public building. It's soooo nice to be able to go dance without getting a migraine and smelling like ick!
That's interesting they'll make it illegal to smoke inside a home with kids present too! Wowee!:D

That's wonderful! Can't say that to many I know IRL...sadly. I am amazed at the attitudes of many supporters of "smokers rights." Whatever, I just think I have the right to go out without being exposed, that's all.

This is the best thing ever, I wish that law were around when I was a kid. My mom has always smoked in the house and my step dad smoked in the car with us kids in it and THE WINDOWS UP. I'll probably get lung cancer.
Just another reason to eat raw I suppose.

The weird thing is how it didn't affect other people like it did me. No one else was sick. That is why he thougt I was overly sensitive because of my diet and being detoxed. But when it actually started affecting my vision (me not being able to see because of the flashes of light) I knew I was in trouble and went outside for fresh air. I guess I haven't been around a lot of cigarette smokers since I went raw.
Before raw I didn't like being around smokers because of the smell, etc. but I could handle it and never got ill. Yesterday was a big eye opener for me.

First off, I agree with you (all of you) that cig smoke is nasty and that it is a nasty habit. I'm thankful that Ohio is now a non-smoking state also, hasn't even been in effect for a year yet and it is wonderful. However, calling smokers losers is a little harsh. My hubby still smokes...not in the house....and he is far from a loser. An addict...yes...a loser....NO!!!

... I actually just read your posts out loud to my mom. She's always been super healthy, and she just accepted that my dad was a smoker. She never smoked with him or judged him for it; it just was...
We completely agree that being a smoker or a SAD eater etc. doesn't make a person a loser, although neither of us approve or are anything less than grossed out by both!
We all make different choices in different situations. We all have different shoes to walk in. Some days I think eating any cooked food is the dumbest thing ever. And here and there the stuff sneaks its way into my mouth!!
I guess my point is just that we all learn from different lessons, but I hope no one's out there calling me a loser because I chose to have a glass of wine on New Year's or because of any other decisions I make!
Either way, it really "stinks" :D when people's decisions give me a headache or hurt me!!!

I didnt mean to insult anyone by saying "loser". That's just my term for gross, disgusting, stinky, an addict, all things bad about cigarettes/drugs/alcohol, and also "how can you still smoke knowing all the bad stuff about it".
I'm just a bit hard core about drugs.
Last night, a friend invited me to hang out with him and some other friends. We were going to visit with one friend before he left for college again this weekend. To my dismay, when I got to his house, they were cleaning up their Hookah pipe to smoke their tobacco. I was appalled. My friend knows I dont do any drugs of any sort. I immediately walked home and told the college-leaving-friend when he arrived, "sorry, I dont do drugs".
Why did they even start this shit? I dont get it!

Also, my dad is a drug addict and an alcoholic since age 8 (he's now 50). My parents divorced when I was 4 years old and my dad has never put in a single ounce of effort to be in my life since then. It has only been just recently that I've seen him and that was because of other family members forcing him to make contact with me. I dont see the point of drugs. They just ruin your life and other's lives.
apower2me408... That was sooo not meant as an attack on you, more as understanding that we all have our struggles. It sucks when they hurt other people, it does... but I just don't agree that all smokers are losers.
Count yourself lucky that you do not deal with addictions to drugs of any sort.
:) I'm sending lots of ((((((((((((((HUGS)))))))))))))))) your way, really!

Morn, I've experienced something similar and even passed out once. I've been incredibly sensitive to cigarette smoke in particular since I was very young. Even if someone wasn't smoking, I cannot even be around smokers. I suppose I'm severely allergic. My eyes burn, I can't breathe, I get a pounding headache and feel dizzy. Unfortunately, I've had to let people go in my life who were heavy smokers and it limits where I can go. If I know in advance there's going to be a lot of cigarette smoke, I don't go. When I went to a girlfriend's bachelorette party in Vegas I had to wear a mask over my mouth and nose. I looked goofy, but I was not suffering that's for sure in those smoke filled casinos. In California, we have a lot of non-smoking laws in many cities and places of business. I sometimes take this for granted when I travel to a place where the laws are not as stringent or enforced.
And definately since going Raw, I can't handle it at all. I sometimes feel like a dog, I can smell everything now from 100 feet away! LOL. :p

It could also be that your system is now clear, especially your lungs and blood. The other bar patrons were most likely toxic from cigarette smoking and/or alchohol consumption. If you're toxic, sometimes this keeps you immune to some toxic substances, like cigarette smoke. If another person in that bar had been eating a raw diet or even cleansing their body, perhaps they may have experienced a similar reaction. Just food for thought.

Amanda, I don't like it either, but remember that people are addicted to the nicotine. Nicotine addiction is very powerful. A friend of mine told me a few years ago that when the cigarette companies were starting out they put a chemical in the cigarettes that cause lifelong addiction. Something about changing the structure of the lungs and implanting something in them as you smoke, it causes a craving of some sort. I wish I could remember all of the scientific lingo. I'm too tired to google, but if he was talking about it, it must be out there. I don't know it's true or not, but it does make one think. I've questioned this myself, why someone would continue smoking. I've never smoked, so I'm not really qualified to answer the question of why someone is addicted. But after he mentioned this to me, it made me start thinking there has to a bigger reason or cause for the addiction.
People use drugs for a number of reasons. Food can certainly be considered a drug in our current culture, the way it is abused. But I would no sooner call someone on this site a loser for working through a food addiction, then someone who was tackling a narcotic or nicotine addiction. I've never understood using drugs and never felt the need to do them, but I try not to judge. Anymore. I used to judge drug users pretty harshly believe me. My father like yours was an alcoholic and became addicted to various drugs towards the end of his life. There are a number of reasons for his escalation to self-destruction that I won't get into. When I was younger, around your age, I was extremely angry at him. He passed when I was in my early 20's. As I've gotten older, I feel more compassion in my heart for him because I know his soul was suffering. He was a good man and cared for his family, in the end we were simply communicating with a drug and drink, not the man that I knew as my father growing up. Drug addiction is a loss of self.
It is really none of my business how you choose to view your Dad. I certainly understand and respect your feelings and I would've probably felt the same way. I will only share that I learned when I forgave my own father and released that anger from my heart, it really helped me heal and move on from it. I don't even think he was impacted by my anger and probably didn't even know I was pissed off when he was alive. It's me who was impacted the most by anger, that's why it's much better to forgive in my opinion. It may take time to forgive completely, but it's good to start somewhere. Anger is an extremely destructive energy when it resides in the emotional body for a long period of time. It is healthier to express it in the moment and then let it go, rather than having it eat away at you. More than you know it comes to direct your life choices, your perceptions of things and will impact your health overtime. It took me 20 years to get this. Just be careful and release this energy when you're ready and able.

Crystalzgoneraw, thanks for your post.
I dont feel any anger towards my father, in fact, I feel nothing. He is pretty much a stranger to me. We have nothing to talk about.
I do realize that it's an addiction that he cannot easily overcome, and I do consider food a type of 'drug' too. I'm certainly addicted to food!
I guess I will clairify my 'loser' comment again. Young people who think drugs are cool are very ignorant and dumb. They dont see any hope in life so they have to turn to drugs to numb the pain. I've done this with food. But at least food doesnt give you cancer. Although there are certainly other problems that overeating/obesity can cause. So I guess I'm being a hypocrite here, but I dont know what else to say. Drugs are just not cool!

Absolutely, Rawkin. Much of the "food" eaten today causes cancer. If people would face the fact that too often, cancer is a lifestyle disease, more people would be willing to make changes in the way they eat and live.
Also, the CDC (Centers for Disease Control) has stated that second-hand cigarette smoke is as dangerous as radon and asbestos. None of us would knowingly or willingly expose ourselves to either of those killers. But second-hand smoke is a killer, too and we should avoid it with the same diligence as we do other toxic killers.
For Christmas I got my husband a personal air filter, called a Buddy, made by Ecoquest. (http://www.ecoquestintl.com/customers/product_guide/fresh_air/fresh_air_buddy) I don't sell these, but a friend recommended it and it really does seem to work. He was frying potatoes the other day and I walked in and said, "Whew! You need to turn on the exhaust fan! Don't you smell that greesy-smoke smell?" He said, "No, I don't." And he was wearing his "Buddy". I thought that was a good test of it's effectiveness. It just hangs around your neck and purifies a circle of air around your head and neck. They're great for people with sensitivies to perfumes, dust, etc. but also good for purifying the air in your "space" when in an airplane, at a restaurant, etc. They're a little pricey at full retail cost but I got a new one on eBay for less than half of retail price. Might be worth having on hand for those times you know you are going to be exposed to smoke and you can't avoid it.
Coonlie - that sounds like a really cool product! How much did you pay for yours on ebay?
Coonlie
01-06-2008, 11:11 PM
Including shipping, $70. Retail price is, I think, around $199 - at least that's the price that was quoted to me by an Ecoquest distributor. There may be some variations in that, depending on the dealer. When I was looking for other sources, I also saw some on Craigslist. You can probably get one for quite a bit less than retail if you check around. It would be interesting to see how it does in a smoke-filled room, but my husband won't even walk into a place like that. ;)

Luckily where I live it is illigel to smoke in any public stores, restaurants etc. but even someone out on the streets just passing by makes me feel like I need to hold my breath....this is also true with bad exhaust from vehicles when I'm out exercising, so I try to avoid busy streets.
