OK, at first glance this might sound crazy, because I think our inclination is to always go with new bedding, but....im wondering about the chemical fume diffusion/outgassing of new bedding..
I just moved across the country and need to get a bed, futon, or something. i started on yoga mats on the floor, and finally resorted to an air mattress--which smells like vinyl and im sure is outgassing tons of fumes while i sleep...ive been trying to figure out whether to get a new mattress or futon mattress, or a used futon mattress off of craigs list.... i think its kinda gross to get some random persons bed and start sleeping on it..hence my preference for a new futon mattress, but then i started thinking about all the outgassing of chemicals that new mattresses probably put out from both the materials theyre made from and from any fire retardants, etc that they have to be sprayed with.... and i started re-thinking the getting a used one thing. (the best solution would be to go get an organic cotton futon mattress somewhere, but im a broke college student and theres no way i can afford that at the moment). but then someone told me you shouldnt get used bedding because it would have mites and stuff from peoples skin, etc in it....so I DUNNO!!! sure i could get a used one...and cover it with a plastic cover...but then that sort of defeats the purpose of avoiding plastic outgassing..because id be dealing with the vinyl cover. i just hate the idea of inhaling chemicals from new bedding all night long.... and ive already checked with friends and friends parents in the area and noone i know has any extra mattresses around that they want to get rid of...
suggestions? opinions?
