I'm thinking of buying those huge Himalayan crystal salt stones, but have no idea how to use them. How can you grind them into a usable salt? I know you can buy it pre ground but I want to order the whole rocks and grind them myself.
Thanks

hi, i have the big stones and the pre-ground. i'm totally sure (as long as you trust the source you are purchasing from) you can grind the big ones. i just use the pre ground and make a brine out of the big stones that i sponge over my body after exfoilating once a week or so. speeds up cell turn over.

I know I can grind them, my question is how? Do you only use the big ones for brine?
It's expensive and I really would like to see the whole stones and grind it myself, but as I said I simply have no idea what tool would be needed (a hammer? food processor? blender?). I'm afraid it would break my blender or food processor, both of which are very expensive models, but I have no idea how hard those stones are.
Thanks
I don't have that exact kind of salt, but I use coarse salt in a small pepper grinder, just grind it into my recipes or on whatever. :) I'm guessing you could also use a coffee grinder, but I haven't tried that.

I would try a mortar and pestle to grind the stones.....if you get a set made of granite, I imagine it would be strong enough! I think you can get a mortar and pestle at any kitchen supply store, but you'd have to look into that, as I'm not entirely sure. Good luck!
Oh, and here's a picture in case you don't know what one looks like ~

I think the big ones are used to make a salt sole.....you take a qt. jar of pure water and add several stones...let them dissolve, add several more, keep doing that until no more will dissolve. I have seen recipes that use the sole by the T. to add adundant minerals to foods or even added to water.......

I'm talking about salt stones, these are several inches accross and would never fit in a grinder or mortar and pestle.

How about a bag and a hammer (or something equally as heavy) to crush it....
