This is going to be a bit of a novel but I'll try to stick to the Reader's digest version. So, I've been crazy into Green Smoothies for the last month. They have literally been changing my life and body at the speed of light. I'm one of those "strugglers" who fervently believes in the healing powers of RAW and yet, and yet. Cooked food (nasty friedness sometimes) appears to be my nemesis.

Towards the end of last year, I made some really huge life changes to ensure my success in both nutrition and life. I acknowledged my alcoholism and quit drinking with the help of AA (67 days sober! GO ME!) and I cleared out a lot of toxic psychic habits after that. I also read 12 steps to Raw Foods which just clicked with me like nobody's business. So without doing anything else, I started pounding green smoothies into my system and managed to go a week at a time Raw.

Fast forward to Monday when my body started it's own little mucous revolution. This cold has been the most unbelievable detox I have EVER had and I am so intensely grateful for it. I've had it all, fever, chills, major mucous outpouring. And I went totally natural, I let it be. I slept, I sweated, I fasted, I juiced. Moments of it sucked, for sure, but I knew that it was my rite of passage into a cleaner body.

And at the end of it I have let go of three pounds I no longer had any use for, killed most of my remaining cooked food cravings, and feel lighter and more energized than ever. How's that for a holiday miracle?

congratulations!!!! you have accomplished so much! I am also going through a mucous detox. YUK. I had a late night encounter with cheese and I lost. Now it is clogged in the lungs. I will be so happy to be rid of it!
What do you put in your green smoothies? Do you use a vitamix? I have been sticking to juice so far, but I'd like to try the smoothies in my regular blender. I am saving my pennies for a vitamix. Keep on rawkin in the green world!!!!:)

Congratulations on your sobriety! I'm really sick as well - I didn't know being sick was a form of detox! Is this true for all rawfoodists?

Search on the site for mucous and related issues and you'll find some pretty interesting stuff re:illness and detox....Rawkinlocs in particular has some really informative reading. Alas, I don't know how to post links and can't remember exactly what I read today or I would steer you in that direction!

Also, thank you sooo much for the kudos on my sobriety! It's def the best gift I've ever given myself and it's wonderful to be clear and present for this raw journey....

Two months ago I would never have believed I would have been able to stay sober for more than a week. Now that I've gotten that addicition under hand, I know that the same tools will lead me my bliss in raw foods. Someday, someday, I will be free of ALL my addicitions. I totally believe it...

love you much-Em

Congrats! I also had many cold symptoms as I detoxed, especially lots of mucus.

Dear Emilie,

I'm so grateful that you posted. I had a deep emotional breakthrough mid-December and I've had some crazy detox related to that, most recently is a grotesque cold. Like the little creature in the movie Flight of the Navigator, all covered in slime and mucus. My detox has shifted and changed almost on a daily basis and I've gotten quite tired through it, and feelings of self-pity or fear have come up. Your way of seeing it is vastly better! I'm going to put your words in my journal and remind myself to turn away from my negative responses and embrace the stuff that's happening to my body. My rite of passage. I never have to go back to the way it was before again!

May I share your words with a counselor friend who has been offering me support through the difficult stuff?

Many heartfelt congratulations on your sobriety! I'm cheering for you!

Good on ya Deb! Isn't it wild how closely emotional and physical detox run? I loved your words, they inspired me right back. xoxo Em
