View Full Version : Pomegranite seed question...help!

I've recently re-discovered pomegrates, am eating one daily for breakfast, but just heard of someone putting some in a smoothie...but can you consume the seeds?

Aren't they too hard for blender blades (or juicing?)

I'm interested in trying it, but don't want to waste it, if it makes it weird...or wreck my blender!!!

Help, anyone?

The seeds are edible. I have put them in my blender before, and they did fine. (I have a K-tech 2000, 1.8 hp). I have also juiced them before with no problem. (I have a Green Star juicer).

Ok, now i feel silly...but when i tried to chew them, they seemed rock hard to my teeth...
...so i just, um, well, I put a mouthful in my mouth, then chew/suck all the fruit & juice out of them, then spit the seeds out (gracefully, of course!) onto the plate...
...isn't that how EVERYONE eats them???

Never mind.
Thanks.

Uhhh, no. I never even considered spitting them out. Didn't even know one would do that. Rock hard? ummm, no. I'm actually as mystified about someone doing this as you are about others NOT doing it. :p

This is how I have always eaten them, since I was a kid. I was always confused when people put them on salads and things. I have never tried eating the seeds!! You aren't alone!

I put them in my juicer and juice them. Or suck on them and spit them out.

We usually juice them and then pour the juice in the blender along with a banana, peaches, spinach, ice, agave & prickly pear cactus juice. We only have a sickly el-cheapo blender unfortunately...just hate chunks and seeds in my smoothies... ( :

Yay, I'm not as weird as I thought! Somehow I feel better now, knowin' I'm not the only one!
I forgot I'd heard about some people sprinkling them on salad! I'll hafta try that now!
Now back to Biggest Loser! Are ya watchin'???
I'm trying to keep exercising as I'm watching, but on 4 hours sleep, after goin' all day, I'm almost too pooped to party, as they say! {& my legs are aching from using the stepper & rebounder for the first time in...???}
So I'm taping it, & will do my extra workout tomorrow when I re-watch it!
See?? There's ALWAYS a solution!

A "slice" of pomegranate? Please tell me you're not cutting them! There's no way to do that without wasting the poor little pods that get sliced and spill their juice. :eek:

Here's one way to open them with minimal casualties http://gourmetfood.about.com/od/cookingtechniques/ss/cutpomegranate.htm

I personally have gotten good at not wasting more than a few pods. I treat them like gold! Then I devour them by the handful :D

LOL

I sliced the top off like the slide you attached showed then I made another horizontal slice.Just for a sample. Put saran wrap onthe rest and put it back into the fridge. This mornigns plan was going to be to quarter it and suck and chew through the goodness spitting seeds and membranes as I go if necessary.

But hey wait til my VITAMIX 5200 arrives;)

Thank you for that, I love pomegranate seeds, but always thought they were such a mess to get to. That way looks alot better. I put the seeds in a big bowl and eat with a spoon, they're so good.

Wow, what an interesting conversation here...
...I'll go check out the link about how else to open them, who knew there was another way besides mine?!?! Ok, I knew, but I LIKE my way! I do cut into some of the precious pods, but I eat 'em anyways, & pour any spilt juice into my water glass~
But I'm willing to learn new things...I'll even eat a seed,k? just 4 U, Revell!

I just checked that tutorial out, it seems to be basically what I do, sectioning it like an orange...

(I just never cut the top off first)...

....BUT I was dismayed to see them washing all that yummy juice away!!!! Who cares about juice on my clothes! (I take my shirt off first!Um, never mind...I do have a tank top on!!!)

So I ain't goona do it!!! (tear it apart in water, soak it to separate the pith...I just pick it out! I enjoy that part!!! It ain't that difficult! It's like uncovering treasure!)

I LOVE the glass of juice I get from it afterwards...& I confess, when no-one's around, I've even been known to lick the plate...
...did I mention that I LOVE pomegranites???

~Anastazia~
{Off to eat one now...}

This conversation reminds me of something I learned {& love to do!} years ago....

"A" seed? *snickers* :D

OK, OK, maybe two!!
Who knows, I might even like 'em!!!

Even start asking those who DON'T eat 'em to send 'em to me!!!

Make a big salad outa them, mixed with other seeds!!!

Write a book called "1001 Things to do With Pomegranite Seeds"...

...make a seed smoothie....

...use them in crafts...

...dehydrate them & toss them at weddings...

...fill little heat bags with them for those who still have a microwave, & pain sometimes...

...collect them for my dream garden oneday!

Ok, I'm done...I think...{stay tuned.}

Just for you, Revell! {Isn't your name a kind of ice cream? I'm having flashbacks!}

O.k., miss brat.

IF you SPELL it correctly, and proNOUNCE it correctly, no!

Now, if you spell it INCORRECTLY, it could be a toy company or a well-known composer/musician but I KNOW you'll spell it correctly and pronounce it correctly.

*Shakes head at the seed eater and wanders out.* :(

I'm new to raw and still finding it quite hard to convert. Besides that though I read this thread because i tried a pomagrante about a month ago and although i loved the juice and flavor i had no real clue how to eat it. Once I learned on the link provided how to open one up and enjoy those flavors I had to go and get one. I also never even attempted to eat the seeds on the other one. Just wanted to let you know that since reading this thread yesterday I've had 3 poms and enjoyed them to the fullest seeds and all. The leave quite a nutty aftertaste that i really like. Might just be my new favorite fruit. Question though? When do they come into season? How soon will they leave my local grocery store?

I broke a tooth on a corn nut once, & ever sinse have been nervous about biting things that are HARD!

But I am goona try juicing them this week, or as soon as I get some more!

Sorry, caypso80 Honey Bee, I have no idea when they come into season...
...or where they naturally grow...
...or if they get sprayed heavily, or are easy to grow organic, but I'm goona do some research on 'em soon!
Glad you're enjoyin' em (seed'n'all!}

I've never thought to de-seed a pomegranite. Seems it would be quite messy...are you talking about the white crunchy part?

IF so--totally edible..at least from what I can tell since my family has never gotten sick off of them. :)

We break it open--then slowly remove the contents into a bowl of water separating the white skin as we go. That part floats and the seeds sink. Scoop out the floaters, drain--and you are good to go. My kids eat it like popcorn.
