Hi--

I just moved from DC to Seattle, living south of Seattle in Burien, will probably be working downtown. Can anyone give me advice on good, cheap organic RF sources? especially for greens and veggies? I know there is a whole foods downtown; but if there are any coops, especially coops that you dont have to pay membership fees at, I'd rather give my money to those instead, if the prices are reasonable and the stuff is fresh...

Also, potlucks or meetups in the area?

Further, what about raw foods restaurants in the area, I'd love to look into working at one--

Thanks much--

Hi - I live in Seattle (OK, I live in Bellingham, but I grew up in Seattle and I visit frequently) and the only coop that I know of is PCC Natural Markets. Unfortunately they have a fee to join so I know its not what you are looking for but thought I would send the link your way: http://www.pccnaturalmarkets.com/

As far as resturants there is a place called Juice Goddess (http://juicegoddess.com/) in Wallingford (U - District)

If you hear of any meetups do let me know I would be interested in getting to know people that eat the same way I do. In the mean time, I think I will find some 7th day adventists - most of them are at least vegan.

It looks like there is also Madison Market - http://www.madisonmarket.com/
But they also charge a membership fee.

I ran a google search for seattle food coops but I didn't find any that were free :( Maybe someone else knows of some.

Welcome kaybee!!!

I live in Bellevue and unfortunately don't get much over to the Seattle side. It might be handy just to google markets and go there to check them out yourself. I live 2 miles from Whole Foods. That is where I reluctantly shop during the Farmers Markets off season.

Best place to shop will really be the local Farmer's Markets when they come back out for the season. You can purchase so much more for so much less $$$$$.

In the mean time you may want to ask around. I'll see if I can come up with something better for you!

Welcome to the beautiful Pacific Northwest!

Yes, there is an active organization that hosts everything from potlucks to events (David Wolfe will be here in February), and they give classes on raw food preparation, and you can join their mailing list or call them with the information listed below.

http://rawwashington.org/index.htm

Raw Network of Washington
1037 NE 65th St.
Suite 210
Seattle, WA 98115

I'm over in Kitsap County so I can't be of help in shopping except that I also aim to buy all I can at the local Farmer's Markets during the summer months and I have a Central Market in my little town where I shop the rest of the year.

There is also a raw food restaurant (they also serve some vegan cooked foods) in Seattle...

http://www.chacocanyoncafe.com/

Corner of 50th and 12th
4757 12th Ave NE
Seattle, WA 98105
206.522.6966

I've never been there but have heard mostly good things about their raw food menu.

Hope this helps!

As far as groups; I have just joined two raw foods potluck goups through www.meetup.com, in Seattle & Kirkland/Woodenvill; Just type in "Raw Food" and your zip code and you will get those nearest to you. I believe the naxt one for the Seattle goup is Jan 12 and it has over 200 members!

thanks all--

yeah, i found that rawwashington site and ended up on a whim going to their new years eve potluck in seattle. food was good and it was good to meet some people in the area (did i meet any of you there? dont think so, but maybe...????)

my housemate said to try the PCC place too; ive got to find it though. i hit the downtown wholefoods the other night and i do have to say, the stuff there WAS beautiful, and some of the produce (veggies) even a bit cheaper than the co-ops in wash DC where I came from... We are near a Trader Joes too, but though they do carry organic stuff and some of its cheap, im not a really big fan of theirs because everything is all wrapped up in plastic and doesnt strike me as nearly as fresh as the stuff at WF or coops--plus i hate all that extra packaging (TJs is great for cheap eco-friendly soap and laundry detergent and stuff though...)

thanks all, hopefully i will run into some of you somewhere sometime, perhaps at one of the rawwashington events or something.

by the way, at the raw potluck i went to, there were 2 chefs from a new raw catering/restaurant that just opened in kirkland, and they brought THE most amazing raw pizza. hempseed crust, with some kind of tomato sauce, chopped fresh basil, olives, peppers, tomatoes, etc. so yeah, if im ever up that way im gonna check that place out too :) think kirkland is a bit of a ways from me though (burien)...

Hello and welcome!!!

Seattle has some great resources and a large, active raw community. We are very lucky here.

You should join the Raw Washington yahoo group and the meetups to get stay updated on events.

Chaco Canyon (not all raw but all vegan and some nice raw selections) and Juice Goddess are both awesome. I haven't been to the place in Kirkland but I've heard that it is really good.

Madison Market has the best selection of prepared raw foods and nut butters, etc... They have a little raw section.

The International District has some great Asian markets where I get amazing deals on fruits and produce. I especially love Lam's and Uwajimaya (much more expensive than Lam's but much nicer).

Blessings!

Have a look at this thread I just put up about the new restaurant with all the details, their menu is fab.

I will be attending the meetup.com group there on the 20th and the Seattle meetup at Chaco Canyon on the 12th. (Jan). Not a big fan of the very earthy food at Chaco but look forward to meeting the people. I am VERY excited about the Kirkland one though - you have to come as so far I am the only one who has RSVP'd!!!:o
