:D DAMN, Whole Food$ wants the WHOLE DAMN DOLLAR

:::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::
Note: the following blurb is a PRE reRAW rant of epic proportions. Yes RAW detox is real even before you return to RAW. If you can't handle the hit get out of the kitchen and shut the back door!!!!
:::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::
I'm usually pretty good about change. I mean flexability is my mantra. But good grief when Whole Foods bought Wild Oats my earth stopped spinning. At first I was so totallys toked because
1. Nashville didn't have a whole foods
2. I've been to whole foods in LA, loved it!!!
3. My dumb assumption was that a big volume store that merged with another big volume store would increase their offerings

NOT
Nashville WHOLE FOODS is a big fancy smancy meat and three.
Who the hell wants grits with their tofu?
Or potatoes augratin with chicken broth and kale?
Damn can't a vegetarian sistah get some tempeh without the fat back.

Uuuugggghhh
So I went to WF today, like I do every week, hoping things had changed.
They changed allright!!!
Instead of getting two bags of groceries for $30 bucks I got 1 bag for $31 WTF*
Oh and to top it all off they were trying to charge $15 for a 16 oz bottle of Dr. bonners LAvendar and $8.99 for the same size in Peppermint.
So I question the clerk and she tells me its because lavendar cost more than peppermint.
WTF* again ?!?!?!?!!?!?
Hmmmmmm guess Dr. B doesn't know that, so they just price everyhting the same ounce per ounce. Wgat frickin turnip truck did she just fall off of?!?!?!?
All I know is that it cost a Whole Frickin amount of loot to shop at Whole Foods:(
Give me a break
Oh yeah and there local support options take capitalism to a whole 'nother level.
How 'bout 6oz maybe less of RAW CAULIFLOWER food processed with cumin and 2 cashews for $6.99. For $6.99 you gonna have to cook that mess so I'll go into toxic shock and forget to curse you out.

the whole foods acquisition of wild oats has not been very positive out in boulder, either. within the first week of finality being stated, their organic frozen fruit went from $3.48 to $3.99, and their organic fresh-squeezed OJ for $7.99 disappeared and was replaced with non-organic fresh-squeezed OJ for $8.99, and their organic spring mix went from $2.65 to $2.78. i'm a college student working with about $100 a week split between food and gas so you better believe i noticed that $0.13 increase on the lettuce.. :p

the sad part is boulder has whole foods, wild oats, and a place called ideal market (in cahoots with wild oats/whole foods...theyre linked off wild oats (whole foods?) webpage, but im not sure how theyre related)..and then the normal safeway, etc grocery stores. unfortunately ive found the organic produce at the latter to be of such low quality that it isnt worth extra money spent. and im a big organic fan so i try to stay away from non-organic as much as i can.

wish there was still a co-op here. i almost think itd be worth the gas money to drive to the next city over once a week to stock up on reasonably priced food..

Yeah, I'm plotting strategies for gardening next summer, recruiting several friends for extra plots on their property too, planning on freezing my own berries and learn some wild crafting. Meanwhile, a substantial percentage of my income goes down my oral cavity......

I agree...I use to do most of my shopping at Wild Oats. they has sales and over all better prices than whole foods. Plus I can get some raw products there which whole foods did not carry. Whole foods has impacted Wild Oats and not for the positive changes I had hoped for in the beginning.

I always enjoyed the occational visit to whole foods. But now i feel as if I don't want to give my money to an organization which monoplizes an industry to line thier pockets with little regards to how the struggling individuals and families are fairing.:(

YAY! I LOVE IT! I hate spending so much money on produce......I've tried sprouting to help get more greens, but I haven't been really successful! My DH is really understanding about me spending money on produce, but I'm the one who has a problem spending.....and I even try to shop at Walmart, which is really not working because sometimes the produce isn't edible!!! I can't afford the GAS to drive 35 miles to Earth Fare or Whole Foods, not to mention the cost of the food.....

I'm glad I'm not the only one who notices the .20 increase in certain foods!!

I know just what you mean Life....

I haven't shopped at WF's in a while. I miss the Wild Oats; the one in my area (St. Louis) had a different feel to it; when I shopped there it was more of a down-to-earth human connection. At WF's, it feels just like being in a regular grocery store at times and the one in St. Louis doesn't offer variety in raw (other than the produce of course). The prices seem to be steadily on the rise. I wanted to buy some bags of cranberries so that I could make some delicious apple cranberry juice and ended up putting the cranberries back because it came down to spending all that money on a few bags of cranberries or buying gasoline for the car......

I have a friend who wants to do a co-op sort of thing but can't seem to find enough consensus where we live. I'm working on figuring out some sort of garden. My little bitty one bedroom condo doesn't offer outdoor space for gardening. I've been researching the idea of purchasing an Aeorgardner or maybe those earth boxes for my herbs and veggies I eat frequently. I don't know????

I sympathise. We've just got our first Whole Foods in the UK, and instead of my usual lovely friendly store (called Fresh & Wild in the UK) we now have this vast vast emporium which takes ages to look round and everything seems very expensive. On the plus side though it has meant I could buy young Thai coconuts for the first time.

But I do yearn for simplicity and naturalness... and cheaper prices

Have you been to Vitamin Cottage? I looked it up and there is one on 30th and Pearl. They don't have as big of a selection by far but their produce and bulk is pretty reasonable (compared to WF). They also have lots of raw stuff you can't find in other stores, Davids Wolfes chocolate, raw crackers, raw granola...it's all pricey but nice to have the option. Just a tip from a fellow Colorado dweller.

lifeAgift- I have been to the Nashville Wild Oats, and I think in Louisville, too. I can't imagine grits and tofu, do they serve it that way at Shoney's? lol I think that was the big breakfast buffet lplace. I did have some awesome grits in South Carolina, I think it was the white pepper or maybe cardamom.
Yes, we spend close to the whole paycheck at WF for the OG produce, hubby wants to buy stock.
In Colorado I hit every Vitamin Cottage along the way, and was thrilled to hit Nevada and CA where I had both Wild Oats and Trader Joes. All that traveling was a few years ago,a road trip by myself (sigh). I bought and ate tons of avocados, celery, carrots, and almond butter.
And I am a co-op veteran of 25 years.
I think we are stuck paying the price for what we can't grow ourselves.

My main complaint with them is why they sell conventional at all... I think foods sprayed with poisonous pesticides should not be offered to humans at all and afterall they are supposed to have high standards which is why I end up paying top dollar there.

um, grow gardens!!

Bought some reasonable priced RAW cashews and golden flax ( which is why I went to begin with), plus a few miscellaneous stuff .

Refusing to buy my Dr. B's there and I'll stcik to Target for 7th generation dish soap.

I'm going to get a good internet roation of shopping going so I can avoid Whole Foods all together, It's jsut to pricey for me

I went to whole foods today...thirty mins from me. I found to go there w a plan and discipline, it can be ok cost wise.

I got what needed and was happy with my raw cashews and chia as well as my kombucha. I was thirsty n so tried to open it and drink some while in line,,,,well you know kombucha, it fizzed and sprayed all over. Embarrassing and what a mess.

Blessed to have such stores with variety for every taste.

going to WF tommorow or Thurs with a list and a firm game plan. I use to skimp on RAW produce cause we are a big family and eat so much. But skimp no more aiming for getting the best and making the investment in our health knowing that we are worth it and that there is plenty in the universe for our needs.

I have been feeling sorry for myself because the closest WF is 1 1/2 hrs away and I wanted to check them out. But, I have the best co-ops available about 15 miles away and they have really good prices. Many times the organic produce and fruit is cheaper than the non-organic in a regular grocery store.
