Is it possible that Spirulina can make you sick if the dosage is too high? I had maybe 1 1/2 tablespoons of Spirulina powder in my Green Drink yesterday and at first, felt energized and good... well, about 45 mins later I was in the bathroom, with horrible nausea, diarrhea and vomiting. I was sick throughout the entire night, woke up this morning and feel fine. Something similar has happened before to me, and I realized just today that on that day I also had Spirulina.

Does this mean I should avoid Spirulina completely or maybe try a lower dose???

What was in your smoothie, perhaps it was a combination of things and not necessarily the spirulina?

If it is solely the result of using spirulina - it is a very powerful food and it could be that it triggered detoxification symptoms in your body. I use 2 tsps in my smoothies, but I also went through a huge detox this year prior to going Raw. Maybe try reducing the amount you use and go slowly.

Drink plenty of water during the day to flush out toxins also if you're not already doing so.

Hope it works and you don't get too sick again.

that happened to me too minus the vomiting. i lowered the dosage and masked the flavor with a better tasting smoothie and was fine- good luck

It wasn't a smoothie actually, it was a green juice... I used the same things I always usually use in my juices, nothing new... it was some kale, cucumber, apple and lemon and then the spirulina. I will try and lower my dose next time! that's true, it could be detox... however, I've been very clean the past year and I've been on and off high raw for the past 6 months so I wouldn't think my detox would be as severe as that. so I dont know, i'll try a lower dose and see what happens! thanks!

It's always detox. It's an ongoing process.

for me spirulina was very lame .
i forced myself to use it tens of times
because of all the hype on it but it
always tasted too bad so i quit it .
my attitude became NOTHING beats
fresh / raw , thusly no powdered / dried
superfoods .
