View Full Version : A goji mistake

I just bought three bags of goji berries... I got a really good deal, about a 1/3 of the price of what they normally are. I have never bought them before because goji berries seemed like an unnessecary expense. So... I have all these berries... and I just don't like them! I am surprised because I usually like EVERYTHING... but these... the sweetness/ taste make me a little queasy. I just tried them again in my raw oatmeal this morn, and after a few bites... I had to pick them all out.

I refuse to waste anything... and the nutritional benefits are great... so does anyone have any recipes/uses for goji where the taste is not strong?

If not, some kind of raw food trade may be in order

Drop them in your smoothies or smoozies. You are doing smoozies, aren't you? :p

I don't like the taste of goji berries either, I put them in raw chocolate along with dried coconut and sunflower seeds. Somehow they seem to taste better in a chocolate mixture.

And the smoothies idea is great, I sometimes put them in smoothies too. I soak them on water for about 5 minutes beforehand.

I'm glad someone mentioned this. I thought I was crazy not liking these when I hear people talking about them. I tried them dried, then I tried them soaked, but yuck! I just dont think I can eat them. I will try once more with smoothies, but after that, I will have to throw them out :-(

The taste reminds me of SAD raisin bran - I don't eat too many of them often, but I can tolerate them - they are sooo good for you!

I don't like dried goji berries, but the owners of a local Chinese food restaurant grow "wolfberries" (goji berries) in their backyard and sell freshly pressed goji berry juice, which I love. It's such a bright red color, so you can tell it has a lot of anti-oxidants.
Maybe goji berries just weren't meant to be eaten dried, because I find them very bitter when dried. Chocolate hides the taste really well.
I always try just a small amount of things first before I buy a ton of them, to make sure that I like it.

So many foods in the health food industry over the years has become a fad and really aren't all that great. Just expensive and different. So...what about gogi berries, agave, etc? I'm not being sarcastic. Its just something I've noticed in my 54 years. Are they really worth the extra money and shipment fees if you have to order them? Are they that healthy and a must have? I really do want to know. I've wondered but have never asked. Maybe I'll be the next Goji berry fanatic!

Hi,

I didn't like them at first either but they can grow on you!

Try soaking them in fresh squeezed oj or you can grind them up and use them in recipes relatively unnoticed.

A good Christmas gift to someone perhaps ;)

When I first tried goji berries I just came off of a master cleanse, lol, so everything tasted good. But I'll admit they didn't do that much for me. I prefer them mixed with raw cacao nibs and I throw them in my raw chocolate banana ice cream and smoothies. I also like them mixed with raw trail mixes. Combining them with chocolate might take the bite out of them for you. However, if you don't like the flavor of something it could just be that your body really doesn't care for it or you could be allergic.

I've also noticed that foods I couldn't stand in my pre-Raw days I just LOVE now. And I would take a wild guess that it's because I was very toxic and literally my body would start to go into detox when I ate super foods. I wasn't aware of this then, but I finally figured it out for myself. Foods like spinach (hated it!), coconuts (hated them!), carrots (yuck!), avocados (ewww!), zuchinni (bleh!). Now I can't get enough of these foods and I love the flavor. It could be that you really don't like goji berries, you could be allergic or there is some part of your systems/organs that are still getting ready to receive the antioxidant power of goji berries. Just something to think about and watch out for. The beauty of being Raw I believe is having a great built in radar system with regard to all foods. You know which ones boost your energy and which ones your body rejects or make you feel ill. In my opinion, it's helpful to pay attention to both signals.

i didnt like them when i first tried them--- now i can eat them by the handful!! :D

one thing ive noticed is the tibetan goji berry is sooo yummy,
but im not that fond of the chinese wolfberry.

i know people say they are actually the same berry, while other reports say they are different berries of the lycium family, and that the goji is WAYY more nutrient dense than the wolfberry. i have to agree with the reports: ive tried many different brands and the goji berry ALWAYS wins against the wolfberry. ive also compared the nutritional information and the goji is far & away more nutritious, its ridiculous.

unfortunately its an expensive love.

luckily, my boyfriend just bought us a goji plant :D

thanks for the insight!
i was thinking i could be allergic... the night i ate them i had some stomach issues/cramps... so i dunno. but i don't wanna go there again, so i'm done.

anyhow, update: i had to go to the store today and i was able to return the bags (even the opened one) for store credit and i got a bunch of fresh foods that i know i like! i had never had my body so strongly react to a food... so i think the goji is not for me... as far as it's "super antioxidant power"... hmmm... i'll stick with the yummy pomegranites that everywhere right now.
