New Year's - Hoppin' John?

Before I get in the kitchen to experiment with this, is there anyone that has successfully created a raw version of Hoppin' John, with black eyed peas, for New Year's?

Beginning to consider what going to do for meals for New Year's, and I always enjoyed this traditional Southern dish.

Any ideas welcome too :)
