View Full Version : Hello from south Mississippi!

Hi everyone! I've been researching a lot about eating raw... aka sitting in Barnes & Noble reading books I can't afford!
I am having a lot of trouble making the transition tho... I'm from Mississippi & I have a very food-based culture... so it's hard enough being a vegetarian!(My step-dad & brothers hunt & fish talk about a clash of interest!) ... I want to eat raw(vegan) for various reasons (clearer skin, weight loss, more energy, etc) but I'm a college student & It seems way out of my budget! I'm at home for Christmas break now and there is nothing to eat around here but crap! (I have six lil bros & sisters)... For some reason my family doesn't believe in eating REAL food...
I hope I can find people that I can relate to on this site to help me make this transition!

Hi and welcome choconilla (cute name, btw)!
Well, I understand what you mean on various levels. But it doesn't have to be expensive. Firstly, start out buying the fruits and veggies you LOVE. Search eBay or Craig's list for any equipment you may want (food processor, blender, etc.) and drink green smoothies (there are literally TONS of threads here on green smoothies if you want to do a search for them).
There are also a lot of informative, previous threads on "raw on a budget" if you care to search those out too. But here are a few to jump start you and give you some great ideas on eating raw without breaking the bank:

Second that rawkinlocs - love your name - it sounds like a delicious smoothie to me!
There are quite a few college students here on this forum so seek them out and I'm sure they will have some great advice. I would offer my two cents but when I was in college, Madonna was just entering the music scene...oh my goodness - i just made myself feel soooo old!!! Just kidding - welcome

Hey there choconilla...
Nice to meet you. I know what you are up against. I have family-cousins, aunts, uncles, etc.- all over Mississippi:D. Ditto to what Rawks said. Keep it simple.

You'll find lots of support and great ideas here. As far as getting equipment etc. You'll find a way....I started teaching 2 piano lessons a week and I was amazed at how quickly it added up and I was able to buy one piece of equipment and then another without affecting the family budget. I now have nice equipment and it was with only 1 hour of teaching piano lessons a week. You'll find a way. Good Luck....I've gotten lots of fun ideas from here...enjoy!!!!

I live in Gulfport so I thought I'd say hi! I am as new to this as you are but I completely understand how food can be such a big part of family life. When you're from the south EVERYTHING revolves around food. I know you'll do great if you set your mind to it.
I am doing the January 30 day challenge and looking forward to beginning.
Take care and here's to the New Year!! :)
