View Full Version : I need to Winterize my workouts!

It's pretty much only getting highs in the mid-30s here and I am NOT used to the cold yet. We relo'd from Texas 6 months ago. In my younger days, I'd have been running around in a tank top in this weather, but not at 41!

I LOVE to walk outside, and was doing 3.5 miles per day, but I hesitate to get so much as a toe out the door in this cold. I live in a 107 year old farmhouse, that also stays pretty cold, but not freezing. The main floor is the most comfortable area. The upstairs is like a meat locker! I don't DARE go down into the basement, as the wood floors of the main floor are at times painful cold.

I have a TV/VCR that we only use for workout videos and the occasional movie (we don't do cable or watch TV) that lives up at what now feels like the North Pole. I was going upstairs to do my bellydance videos, but now it's so icy up there, I don't do it.

Historically, I have gotten the best results from just plain ol' walking. I do not own a treadmill, but would LOVE to have one for bad/cold weather. Being that I do not, can anyone give me ideas on how to winterize my workouts?

Has anyone had any experience with the walk away the pounds type of videos?

Also, for those with rebounders, what do you use them for? I don't own one, but am curious if it is for running in place? or is it more of a trampoline?

Thanks!

Check out the "Abundance" thread in the Personal Growth section. I've told what I do there. Most of it I do inside although the ropes are done outside.

There are LOADS of vids on the rebounder. Running in place would be SO booooring! Like being a rat on a wheel. Dance girl, dance!!!!

I've winterized my workout by getting on my treadmill (and watching tv at the same time) and also doing exercise videos. My treadmill was only $350 when I got it. It doesnt have any fancy bells or whistles, and recently the digital screen went out. but it works just fine otherwise.

Maybe you should move your tv/vcr down to your warmest room, that way it wont be unbearabe. I know how it is having something in a cold room that you want to use; my piano never got moved into our house when we moved to a new house when I was 14. It is still to this day (almost 8 years later) sitting in the icy cold garage. I eventually stopped taking lessons as I wasnt practicing enough (among other reasons).

WOW!! Scott Sonnen is AMAZING!! and I had TOTALLY forgotten about kettlebells - unfortunately I have never owned any. I played with thme once (years AGO) at a gym and really had a lot of fun with them. I may have to check into this more...

I have thought about this and am still thinking on how I could do it. The main problem is that I would also have to move the desk it sits on downstairs, and I'm not sure yet where I'd put it or how I'd rearrange the furniture. There's LOTS of room, tho...

I have a lot of Walk away the pounds tapes, I love them and I think they are good to get you nice and warm. Do you have any walk away the pounds tapes?

No. I don't, but I have been curious about them - what are they like?

Sorry, I still haven't broken out those Walk Away the Pounds Dvds! Still in the wrapper. I've seen some of it though. She takes you through a routine that gets your heart rate up in no time! I have my own little thing I do on my rebounder. I started at a weight that didn't allow me to really jump, so I just "walked" on it. Didn't really lift my feet up until I lost a lot of weight. I still prefer my "walk". I just move my legs like I'm walking in place, yet never lift my feet off the mat. Kind of bounce into the mat as opposed to bouncing off the mat. Exaggerated movement of hips. Move arms like walking or power walking. I can't explain it, but it's a good workout for the legs and hips. I've lost weight doing it many yrs ago and now. I just get on and go while watching tv. I tend to go slower, though with the tv on. To kick it up and keep a rhythem, turn on some music. I don't find it boring at all. It's my preferred method of exercize and is great for the lymphatic system.

Well she has 4 basic moves and while you walk she will switch up the moves, sometimes you'll just walk and sometimes you'll be lifting your leg up or moving side to side, as time goes on the pace will increase but the transition is smooth. Leslie exercise tapes are good for everyone even those with knee problems. I love her 4 mile and her new DVD with 5 miles on it. The best part about all of her videos is that you can stop at 1 mile if you want or continue until your ready to stop, some of her tapes even tell you when you've walked a mile.

I hope this helps.

Well, a lot of folk do prefer to do it watching t.v. We don't watch t.v. so, that's out. LOVE having the variety of various dvd's though. :)

okay...I moved the desk and tv/vcr/dvd player, gaming systems, etc. down stairs last week. We have SINCE been having temps up in the lower 50s?!&*(^%!??? What the fizzle??????

Is this like carrying an umbrella with you and it somehow magickally wards off rain????
