Hi everyone -

I am looking for experience, advice, suggestions, etc. I have a friend who will be having invasive surgery in January. He is a 100% raw foodist and is concerned about antibiotics as he is aware of what they can do to the body. The surgeon is willing to not give him the one course of antibiotics that she usually gives, but says there is additional risk of infection.

Has anyone had any experience of surgery without antibiotics? Are there any suggestions of things he can do before and after to help minimize the risk of infection (I have been thinking along the lines of Tea Tree oil, Grapefruit Seed Extract, etc, but have no experience in this area)? Does anyone know of any websites or books that discuss this issue?

Any other thoughts/suggestions would be greatly appreciated!

Just wanted to mention that a friend of mine had some serious oral surgery done and to the dismay of the doctor, wouldn't take the antibiotics. She did do some herbal stuff but what I wanted to bring up was that she did some in-depth visualization exercises and did some self-education on the physiology and anatomy of that area so her visualizations would be right on. She did remarkably well.

Just wanted to report that my friend, who is 100% raw, got through the surgery without antibiotics (he did need to remind all of the staff repeatedly that he didn't want them...). He is recovering well and surprised the surgeon when he did not need any painkillers after leaving the hospital!

I have had several surgeries and never had antibiotics prescribed automatically. I also had 4 impacted wisdom teeth removed in the hospital and wasn't prescribed them either, though they said if I developed an infection then they would. Do alot of docs just prescribe them automatically like this?

Hi CrazyDelicious -

this was abdominal surgery, and they usually prescribe one course while you are in the hospital for that type of surgery.

That's great that you didn't need them!

Oh I see. I can see why there would be an increased possibility of infection with this type of surgery. Am so glad your friend is doing well and continuing to amaze the docs !!:D
