OMG... I just ordered 10 pounds of buckwheat to make buckwheat crispies... The company (not saying who) said that they were raw, and it didn't say ANYWHERE on the site that they were for sprouting.
So they arrived today... black. They have a sticker that says "buckwheat for sprouting"...
What should I do? If they are for sprouting, they must be raw... but why are they black? Can they still be made into buckwheat crispies? Should I send them back and get a refund?

so i just found out, it's just not hulled.... is there something wrong with eating the hull?
Can i make crispies out of it anyway, hull and all? and if not, is there an easy way to hull?

You can't really eat the ones with the hull, even if you could I don't think they would digest too well. I've never tried unhulling buckwheat but I'm sure it would a difficult and very time consuming process without machinery.

The same thing happend to me. I sprouted them because I didnt know any better and they did get little tails then I put them in the food processor to make a dough with tomatoes and other veggies. It tasted ok but the hulls were still there, chopped very finely but I wouldnt recommend making the cereal out of it.

Ecomeal Organic Buckwheat
www.Ecomeal.com
Green Buckwheat is what you need, sprouts in one day, wonderful flavor. Rinse every half hour or so with cold water for the first couple of hours. Soaking water has a tendency to get thick and starchy.
I make buckwheat cereal and use it in recipes. Good luck!

i did the same thing not too long ago and it wasn't pretty - I got it to sprout, made pizza and some other stuff and it was horrible. Little black hulls scratching the throat -
ecomeal.com didn't look like you could buy online from it, but www.organicfruitsandnuts.com (jaffe bros) sells raw buckwheat groats (right above the unhulled ones)
what can we do with those bags of unhulled buckwheat?! throw it in the flower beds as mulch? make a gravel-like path...the possibilities are endless!

I did the same thing as everyone else.
Fortunately, I only bought about a cupful.
I put it outside for the squirrels and birds, who seemed to enjoy it.
The rain sprouted some of it and they ate that too.

I can't buy from eco-meal, and all of the distributors aren't anywhere near where I live (atlanta)... any other alternatives? I go up to Chattanooga every so often and buy it... but not often enough. I'd love to order online somehow...

Is it raw? It doesn't look the same (greenish) as the raw buckwheat I used to buy in Chattanooga at our HFS...

Is everything from this brand raw?

No, they refine some of their grains...but I got the buckwheat whole and it says specifically on the box "Raw, whole" etc.

I live in NYC where there are ethnic specialty stores. Russian specialty stores have every kind of buckwheat imaginable. I am sure there must be one in Atlanta. Also, check in Harry's? Even if they don't have it they might order it for you.

If you are in Atlanta, try Breadbeckers in Woodstock. You can find them at www.breadbeckers.com . I run a co-op for them here in Florida and all of their grains sprout for me. They also have truly raw oats. If you go in, tell them that Tina White said hi. They carry superfoods and gallons of agave nectar now as well.
you can purchase both hulled and unhulled buckwheat as well as millet and just about any other grain you can think of.

this is the natural buckwheat seed, meant for growing as you would wheatgrass or sunflower seeds in a thin layer of soil in a tray (or outside). seven days to grow and cut near the soil with scissors, lovely baby greens. Virginia

I realized that, but I live in a studio apartment, with next to no natural light, and no porch... I think I'll give the seeds to my mom (who loves feeding birds).
