View Full Version : Alissa's book
I have just been trying to buy Alissa's book and all the second hand ones here in the UK are extortionately high priced. I thought it was as easy as going to Amazon and buying one getting it posted and enjoying it, but no, people are selling it here for up to £50. Out of principle, I won't pay that price.

I paid £25 for mine when I got it through amazon.co.uk... I just went there and checked and they still sell the book for as little as £25. (Just swipe Alissa Cohen through the search engine on the site and the offer will come up.) :)
Good luck!

Shipping direct from Alissas store is about $90???????
the weight is 4.5 kg. :( When I get one I will have to cut out the recipe pages and put them in those plastic pockets and put them in a file as I won't be able to lift the book. I think the fact that second hand books go for more than the new one must be because the book lives up to it's image. I can't wait to get one either.

It is heavy! And it is so worth it!! I sure hope you can get one soon. You're going to love it.;)
I'm in the US, so I know my situation was different. But I looked all around my town (and it's a large town) to find it locally & couldn't get one. I wanted to avoid the shipping & I wanted it fast. Anyway, I ended up ordering it from Alissa's store. Best raw purchase I've made yet!!:D

I do not buy books because I use the Internet and the Library to get all of the info I need. I have found numerous sources of delicious raw recipes for free. My current favorite is goneraw.com. many of the recipes are similar to alissa's. I am sure the book is great, but many of us simply cannot afford the luxury of that purchase.

I understand what you mean. I have to get it second hand or not at all as we are on limited income.

To me, it seems like supporting the person who has made this website where you can FREEly communicate with people of like mind and learn about the raw lifestyle is a small show of gratitude.
Alissa's book is a value considering its size and the amount of information in it.
For those in the UK, shipping is an issue, I know... but I also know that our dollar is shrinking in comparison to the euro and the shipping and book combined still make it a good value.
Perhaps someday Alissa will consider putting her book on a DVD, which would ship for less to faraway places, saving postage.
Another option might be for Alissa to contact some bookstores there and see if they'll carry her book...

It is the shipping that is bad, otherwise I would have bought it from her. over $90 is a lot to ship something that weighs the same as the book. I've had stuff that weighs that shipped for a lot less from California to the UK. Also, about having it on a disc, well, the thing about a recipe book is that it can be opened in the kitchen and that I don't have to copy every single recipe out so I can prepare it.

They are Alissa's distributors there.
And, thank you RowanC. Why people don’t just call the office to ask about this instead of putting this here is very strange to me.
I contacted the office but found out about the high cost of shipping.

And then.... you ask if there is a place closer to you to get it.
Alissa does not set the UPS rates. The book is 41/2 pounds and that’s what it cost UPS. you could also ask if they will send it in regular mail although it won’t be insured that way.

If you don't know.....you should ask someone and I think that is what the Author of this Thread was doing. We all know who runs this Forum and we appreciate her as she well knows.
I think some people should be a little more Patience. Let them Vent....There might be someone who can help them. I thought that is what this Forum was all about. I have found all sort of help from Threads just like this.
A Title is just another name....Be nice..Its CHRISTmas
Thank you for that. That is exactly what I put it here for. When a person is new to this it can be confusing. A bit like going into a computer shop the first time when you are only thinking of learning computers.

maybe it's me... and I'm probably gonna get banned for this...
but I"m really REALLY getting weary of people who just complain and complain and complain....
I personally think you people are trying to undermine this website on purpose!
What is so strange about not getting an answer?
Do you know how many times my emails get lost in cyberspace every day?
How many times did you email?
Did you pick up a telephone and call?
Just how bad do you want it?
If you spent the time trying to get the book that you're spending here complaining, I bet you'd get some action!
Do you need someone to hold your hand and walk you there?
God you people drive me nuts sometimes!

Hi, my name is Kim and I work for Alissa in Customer Service. Please feel free to send an e-mail anytime to Alissa@AlissaCohen.com or call the office at 888-900-2529 with any questions or concerns you have and I will be very happy to help you! Alissa ships her book all over the world but doesn't have any used copies available. Sometimes overseas shipping charges can be costly so Alissa has a UK distributor for her book and dvd's at www.therawlife.co.uk. Hope this helps and you have a wonderful Holiday!
Warmly,
Kim

Hey Rowan- I'm putting some positive energy and prayer out for you. Your response is about lashing out with hostility and I don't want to engage in any debate with you but I know you're back on the board after having been out eating SAD for some time and I hope the waters are peaceful for you.
Moderators, I hope I didn't offend you with feedback on the customer service. I wasn't offended to not get a response!

:::chuckling:::
Girl, if that's what you call lashing out, you've led a sheltered life.
But thanks!
Everyone can use positive energy, and I appreciate it. :)
By the way, I noticed you didn't answer any of my questions... curiously.
::shrug:: Oh well....

Thank you, Kim, for the email address of where to get the book in the UK. I appreciate it. I think I was initially angry, disturbed and other meaningful adjectives that Alissas book is a good price from source considering what is in it. It sounds to be very good value, but that people were selling it, second hand, for 2 or 3 times the new price. There is a lot of moneymaking out there for doing something that is as natural and simple as purchasing or harvesting raw food and eating it. Alissa book, it seems to me, gives good advice about how to prepare dishes, as does 'The Sunny kitchen' and it is well worth the price, but it is not Alissa price that bothered me, just those who were selling there books on for two or three times as much. Out of principle, I refused to pay that price. I also refuse to pay prices like £16 for 1 lb. of hemp butter or £16 for 1 lb. of raw cacao nibs, these last especially because the largest profit is made when the cacao is sold on. The growers often grow at a loss and have volunteers to help them harvest.
ROWAN, YOUR ATITUDE IS SO BOLSHY AND SELFISH. I WILL PRAY FOR YOU . You should thank God that you are past the initial phase of feeling lost and confused about all the information. If every one on this or any other raw sites had the same attitude as you I would consider the raw lifestyle a bad one if it produced attitudes like yours.
I live in rural Norfolk and I don't drive, there are no buses and I live on disability income, so I need to get the best price for anything I buy. I STARTED THIS THEAD BECAUSE I WANTED TO KNOW WHERE I CAN GET A BOOK AND COMMENT ON THE CAPITALISTS OUT THERE. I wonder if it is just a case of not participating in these posts and just eat raw.
I have found on ebay, finishing tomorrow, Sunday, Alissas book. It is currently at £1.04. There are two bidders. Item no.190182146846. I cannot bid as it is finished on the Sabaath and I cannot trade on the Sabaath. So anyone else, go for it.

Blix,
Your jumping to conclusions and namecalling isn't very nice at all. In my post that you are so upset about, I wasn't talking to you
My post was addressed to Stina:
I've e-mailed the office before with legitimate questions concerning products and never received a response. Strange indeed!
I found the insinuation that Alissa's office was ignoring her on purpose to be annoying and commented on it. There seems to be a campaign to undermine Alissa, and I personally don't care for it.
Alissa doesn't set the postage rates. And she's done a danged good job creating this forum for all of us to learn from and to share.
People want something for nothing these days. Maybe it's a result of poor parenting or maybe society is at fault for not enforcing consequences. The world is creating more and more people who are all about me, me, me. Whatever it is, I see it more and more and it isn't pretty.
Where I come from and when I grew up, if you wanted something that someone else had and they put a price on it, you saved your money and you paid for it. You didn't try to whittle down the price or whine them into submission. You worked and you saved and you paid for it. If you couldn't afford it, it sure wasn't THEIR fault!!!
The book Alissa is selling is HUGE! It is worth 5 of every other book I've seen on RAW, and you are getting a value if you are paying anything under $100. My suggestion to anyone not able to afford it is to sell every other recipe book you own and use the money to buy this one. Have a yard sale. Save your change. Do without a few other things in order to save for this very important tool.
Let me remind everyone here of something VERY important.
Alissa has something WE want!
WE do not have ANYTHING that Alissa needs or wants except perhaps a little business and support for spending HER OWN MONEY to maintain this website. She could simply have a website where you could read about and purchase her items. Instead, people VOLUNTEER their time and SHE PAYS for the space to host this FREE forum.
Why is it when people are given a gift, they complain about it?
Where does that ingratitude come from?
To me this forum is a HUGE gift from Alissa and people should be thankful.
Blix, as far as living in poverty, I live on approximately $5000 per year, and that's pretty far below the poverty level. So believe me, I'm not unaware of living on a shoestring. I also have severe disabilities, as do many of us on this forum, and am unable to work. So pardon me for being rude and bolshy if I don't feel like you're a special case.
You're right, I am angry. But it doesn't have anything to do with eating or not eating RAW. It has to do with the indignation that comes from seeing selfish and demanding behavior from people who should instead be showing gratitude.
Now that we've both said our pieces, I'd like to suggest a truce.
I have no desire to continue this. But if you feel you must reply, feel free to email me privately so we can keep it off the forum.
And thanks for the offer of prayer, both of you. It's always nice to know someone has your TRUE goodwill at heart. While you're praying, you might go look in the mirror. You seem to have something in your own eye!
