My hair is super dry and I'd like to get it cut. Right now it is past my shoulders. It is stick straight, blonde, very fine and thin. It looks cruddy long, but when it's short it's sorta like a helmet unless I "do" my hair. I am more of a wash and go type girl. Okay, fine - I wear a ponytail every.single.day.
I am thinking that cut is in order for the holidays, however I have been cutting my own hair for a couple years. I just hate going to salons. I posted a while back that I was thinking in the direction of locking my hair, but I think I would look crazy because it's so thin and I don't want to add extra stuff to it.
Boy, that's not a lot to work with, I know.
So...Any ideas for a cut for fine thin hair? Or tips that ya'll have discovered when cutting your own hair?

I'm not sure what you mean by "locking" your hair.

If I were you, I'd go to a good salon and ask them for suggestions. If you are cutting your own hair, you may not be doing it right and that could be why it is not working for you. Get there early so you can look through the books they have and try to come up with some ideas.

what do you mean by helmet hair? stuck to your head? limp? if so, shorter length, between chin and shoulder would be good. also i would suggest layers. short layers, the shortest being to the top of your ear and blending down from there.
i'm a hairstylist, but it's hard to recommend anything without seeing your hair.
also, you get more volume from blowdrying your hair than just letting it dry. but if you dont want to do that, try a volumizing shampoo and conditioner.

Great advice already. A beauty school back home had the motto, "The most important thing you wear is your hair." I've had short, really short, bald (chemo 10 years ago) but had a wig and was blessed to get back even better hair! I've been keeping it right past shoulder-length for awhile which works as I have medium textured wavy blonde hair. I use good shampoo and conditioners and go to the same hairdresser (15 years now), who knows my hair, knows me and good/bad likes to shake it up once in awhile.
Fine hair is awsomely soft and silky but seems to require careful conditioning so as to not be limp and flat--but sounds like you already know that. You can hit the library or pick up a couple hairstyle books at the magazine rack or just wait till you get to the hairdresser as already suggested--but give yourself time to peruse what you like and would look fantastic on you.
Before you cut your hair--if you are liking the length right now, you may want to try a deep conditioning or hot oil treatment (could use olive oil or coconut oil warmed and left in your hair to re-moisturize). Hope some of this helps. You'll be stylin in no time.
