Hi everyone,
I'm sure many of the parents out there can relate when I say that I'm sick of all the fundraisers from schools, kindergartens (or whatever you call them in the US) and creches trying to get you to sell chocolates or other unhealthy 'foods' to raise money.
I used to give in and take a box and leave it at my work (it usually went pretty easily) but I never felt comfortable with it, even though is was raising important money for the kids. As a vegan, I also felt uncomfortable selling chocolate with milk in it. So in the end I decided to simply give them the money I would have raised and not sell the chocolate, and ended up doing this whenever the chocolate fundraisers were held.
So imagine my surprise when my son started school for the first time this year and we found out the food fundraiser they have is selling trays/half trays of mangoes!
What a great idea! Everyone orders their lot and they can pick it up over a couple of days. The kids get all excited when the parents get the trays of delicious looking mangoes and everyone talks about what they are going to do with them.
I just thought I'd share this with you all as I'm sure it could be done at other schools, or a similar thing at least.
I was so relieved that we didn't have to again go and have 'the talk' about why we don't want to sell chocolates but we do want to support the kids. And so happy that such a healthy fruit could be used as a fundraiser and generate such excitement!
We bought one tray, I'd have bought more but the freezer is currently choc full of bananas and I need to keep space for the berries coming in season. One of my son's friend's family bought FIVE trays! I gave them a mango sorbet recipe which they are keen on trying out.
Cheers.
