Hello all.
I recently bought a coconut from Safeway, but I dont think it is technically a "young coconut". It is not white and smooth looking like in the pictures and videos I've seen. It has tan colored fibers all over it.
I tried cutting it open today in the same way that I've seen in a video of a young coconut, but nothing happened. I may not have the right knife, but does anyone know if it is even possible to open a non-young coconut? Maybe I need a drill? I dont want to crack it so much that it goes everywhere and I lose all the water all over the floor or something.
Advise? Thanks

Some times with the older coconuts - we'll drill holes or use a ice pick and hammer -- (where you see the three holes at the top?)... drain what coconut water is in there - then use a machette to open the coconut.
good luck!!

It's an "old" coconut (no way you're gonna be able to CUT it open :D ).
My way of opening them (also great to release excess energy or if you wanna get rid of some aggression... *g*):
Remove water (and save it, of course) as StarFire said.
Then take the bloody thing and enthusiastically smash it on the floor (preferably not on a tiled floor, hehe). Pick it up and enjoy!
Good luck for the coconut challenge!
Eevie (actually enjoying the opening much more than the coconut itself)

I love the mature coconuts
I use a corkscrew to open 1 eye, drain out the liquid
Then smash it up with a hammer or against a wall.. until the meat comes away from the husk.. Then I just grate up the flesh ..and eat ..or make cake :o

I am not far from chinese market - there is a guy here that opens cocnuts with machetas - i have my jar for the milk and take rest home - otherwise it is a fitness excercise fopr a whole family or mess.

Yes, remove the water first. Another way to crack it open is to wrap it in a towel and smash it against a floor. I've taken them outside and smashed them on the cement. It really smashes the coconut into pieces and all the mess stays in the towel...

I take a drill bit and drill a hole in each Dark spot at the end of the coconut. Drain into a mug. Wrap the coconut in a towel and lay it on the floor. Give it a few good hungry girl wacks with a hammer and viola!
Now have fun taking the flesh out. It takes forever :D

This just seems like a ridiculous amount of work for an old coconut, with potential damage to property. I cant be smashing my landlords' floors, walls, or driveway! haha.
I'll be going to Whole Foods next week; hopefully they have some young coconuts!
