Does anyone take herbs?I would really like to try natural alternatives to OTC drugs.Do you know of a good book to read? I read in body +soul mag to ward off a cold take this items:
1.Echinacea
2. Astragalus
3.Yin Chiao
4.Gralic
5.Eldeberry
6.Andrographis
7.ginger
8.Olive leaf extract
9.oscillococcinum
10.Medicinal Mushrooms.
I have been 45 days raw and not have experienced much greatness like everyone else.If you have read my previous post, you know I have a bad problem with phlegm, which has not improved at all.Now I have a really bad cold too. I know in Alissas book she said she started out with a herbalist, well they dont have those in South Dakota, and I really hate taking pills, but I do have to work. Thanks all, Pat.

I am not 100% raw, but I do work with children as a living so I have tried a few products out there. When I was working in daycare, I did use echinacea. Didn't do any good for me personally. Right now I take oscillococcinum (when I feel a cold coming on) and I add ginger to my juices.

When I have had a cold with phlegm, I have found that if I begin treating it early enough, echinacea with goldenseal has worked well. Echinacea works as a blood purifier, and the goldenseal tends to dry up the phlegm. If I let it go too far, though, I wind up with a rip-roaring sinus infection that can only be knocked out by antibiotics...you just have to know when to say "when."

I have the old standard.. 'Back to Eden' by Jethro Kloss. It's an excellent book! Filled with old fashioned remedies - I've used many of them over the years and they work. I'm sure there are many newer books on the market today. But I just loove this book!
Perhaps someone at your hfs could recommend one?

echinacea and goldenseal are both great. do not use for a period more than 3 days, they are unaffective after that time, so basically 3 days on 3 days off, that type of thing. and the book that is my bible is "Prescription for Nutritional Healing" by James F. Balch and Phyllis A. Balch. EXCELLENT BOOK, and it's HUGE!!! It includes a list of prett much every herb you can think of and what it does, their nutritional value, etc. Then there's a section that goes through by alphabetically by whatever ailment, i.e. cold, flu, herpes, sinuses, etc, etc (you get the idea) and it tells you everything about it and lists everything you can take. There are a few editions out there, but I have the second, (thanks to my mom:) ) it is expensive, but you might be able to get it used from ebay or something, or check your local library and see. and the library will have lots of other books about herbs and natural healing. hope this helps and that you feel better soon.
