I red so much about Durian i wanted to try - the taste was very unpleasant like spoiled. Is there a way to eat it? It is normal that it tastes ugh...?
How to eat it?

Yes, hold your nose and don't breathe in; flush the taste with a good mouthwash immediately after.

It is normal that it tastes ugh...?

Yes. That's why it's called "stinkfruit". :D

Best and fastest way would be to immediately send it to me :p
I only had a Durian once (found in a chinese store in Ottawa; could never find it again over here) and I loved it. No, ADORED it. Dunno what people mean about foul/disgusting smell or taste! It's one of the best things on earth (together with cherimoya and carob pods :D ).
So erm.... trust your body. It doesn't want Durian. It wants you to give it to meee :D :D

Love,
Eevie (very envious!! he he)

I've heard and read a lot about durians, can't wait to get my hands on one. I will look for one at the Asian market tomorrow :) My expectations are high! :)

It's an acquired taste. I don't like it either. I have had it a few times. I really hate the smell. It smells like onions which seems so contradictory to what it looks like so I was disappointed when I finally had one. I heard some people saying it tastes like banana custard. Didn't taste like that to me.

Although, I hear that many people don't like it at first and once they have had it a few times, they start craving it.

There are apparently different varieties and also I heard that fresh tastes alot better than frozen.

I may give Durian another chance one day but I would really like to try a fresh one.

Hehe.

I can only repeat my selfless offer for all you "mis-buys" :D harhar....

As for the acquired taste: As I said I only had it once and loved it from the first spoon, so it seems to be a very individual taste thing.
Although mine was raw (the guy opened it for me right in the shop with a scary huge knife :D I didn't have the impression it was smelling that strong though, really. Maybe I was just very lucky, since you mentioned that there are several varieties.
Apart from the taste: The texture. the TEXTURE!!! *drool*
:D

I tried one in Indonesia when I was on holiday and they were in season, piles of them in the market. The smell was dreadful but once opened I really liked the taste but I find many of the more exotic fruits don't travel well. I ate a ripe papaya freshly picked in Queensland one day and it was the most beautiful thing I have ever tasted but the ones in the supermarkets in the UK are horrible.

I have a theory on Durians. You're either born hating it or loving it. There's no middle ground.

I was one of the lucky ones who was born to love love love the smell and taste of it. I can eat the whole gigantic fruit in one sitting. Most likely end up with an achy stomach afterwards for eating too much. I like it fresh and frozen. Whatever.

Too bad my roomy can't stand the smell. Otherwise, I would eat it everyday.:D

Yes, ONIONS!

. . .I bought a bag of rawbakery cookies at RawVolution that were stored in the same fridge as durian. I put that bag into a shopping bag with several other raw treats by the time I got home all the other items smelled AND tasted of strong onions. I cannot tell you how dissapointed I was :(

When I saw Alissa on her DVD giving the Durian to the women she had on the show it looked so good, I really want to try it.

I can't even find one here in Illinois.

Docsharp,
I found Durian at an Asian market in Peoria. They had both fresh and frozen. I don't know if that's too far for you to drive, but you could maybe get one there. I didn't like it at all! ;)

I saw a show called "Bizzare food with Andy Zimmern" This guy travels all over the world in search of the most bizzarre food he could find and he eats every little bugs and critters but when it came down to Durian he couldn't even eat a tiny piece of it. HAHA weak sauce!

I think that might be it - we are all different people and that is all to it. At least i know that the fruit wasnt spoiled - it is its nature to have strong smell!
I know it is very hight in nutriens fruit but it is not my favourite!

Vivafree

That is true to fruits in general!! Those ripe from the local market are usually the best - like apples or peaches during harvest straight from the farm near Toronto, papayas in Indonesia and Durian probably have its moments of glory, but at least now i know that Durian is not my favourite fruit. :):)
Hopefully we will not be forced to eat it!

I was wondering if he would ever eat any "weird" fruits on that show! Unfortuantely, that show is so gross to me with all the animal things he eats that I can never get through a whole episode to find out.

Which episode was the Durian on?

Before raw, I found the smell of Durians, yak!! Didn't even want to get to close, never mention eating them.
After raw, I tried for the 1st time in Singapore in March. It's OK, but don't really like/hate it. Guess it was not in season.
Then I've became a big fan of Durians, I've found Vacuum Freeze Dried Durians (Monthong) at a supermarket in HK.

WOW, it's crunchy, crispy & TASTY. :D

And it sure warms you up in this cold & wet winters.
If you’re a big fan of Durian, you will find these durians IRRESISTIBLE.

Hahahaha! That photo changed my day... gosh I needed a laugh!
Thanks!

I'm one who loves Durian..

You gotta admit it's a love/hate relationship.
People either love em or hate em.

I can eat about half of one... then I"m done, but I do freeze it when I get it.

It is really a stink fruit. I can't stand it. My husband hates the smell so much he doesn't want another one in the house.
I may be willing to try them again but I'd have to eat it on the back porch, and right now it's winter in Detroit so don't think that's gonna happen.

I just tried one for the first time.
It was an odd experience. It was fun opening it.. definitely smelly which is why I opened it at my parents house. lol
I took a bite, had a gag reflex, but there's just something about it that I like.
I couldn't eat any more than a little teaspoon amount but I think I'll be trying it again one time.
I bought the frozen kind since it was about $30 cheaper. Next time I eat one will be fresh in Hong Kong.

I had fresh durian in Thailand - and I have a frozen one in my fridge right now. The fresh is softer and less goey - like clouds of creamy goodness. I also came across a big sign in a hotel in Bangkok that had a picture of a durian in a red circle with a cross through it - no durian allowed. LOL!

$25? They're usually $1/lb here - the one I bought was about $6. I can only eat 1/8-1/4 at a time usually. I like them as is - I hated my smoothie that I put it in. I may try it again though. I'm gonna check out that website!

Oh wow - an order of durian and an order of coconuts would set you back about $300!! I guess I'll have to stick to my frozen and god knows what else durian and $6 and my chemical treated coconuts for $1.99 each. And plan another trip back to Thailand.
