Help: my 1-year puppy's upper eyelid is red & swollen

Hello,

I would like to get some advice. I took my puppy to the emergency last night because I was worried about his eye. The vet gave him eye ointment. It's an antibiotic. I went to get second opinion this morning, and the vet gave more drugs. One is oral antibiotic, and one is oral antihistamine. He already gave him one dose of the oral antibiotic at the appointment. I'm extremely anti-drug, but I know that once a person starts antibiotic, he should continue to avoid future resistance to bacteria. I'm not sure what I should do at this point-continue with the oral antibiotic treatments for the prescribed 10 days or just stop now and use the eye ointment.

What would you do? Thanks in advance for your feedback.

p.s. I've been feeding him raw for the last half a year. Not sure if this is related, but I fed him a vegan diet until just recently, where I gave him cow liver.

What did the vet say? Did he scratch his eye, is it infected? Are you suppose to use only one med or both. Did the 2ed vet you saw know what the 1st vet had prescribed?
As for feeding him raw meat I wouldn't do it the meat supply is not clean you don't know what's in it and what kind of bug or disease he might pick up from it. This includes raw bones also, dogs can get very sick eating raw meat.
I know in the wild their cousins eat raw meat, catching and killing their prey, wild caught animals are a lot healthier than cows or any animal raised in this country for meat unless you get farm raised grain fed out in the sun and fresh grass no antibiotic raised animals.

Thanks so much for your reply. The doctors are not sure. They guess it's an infection but not sure the cause. It looks like a big pimple with puss. According to the 2nd vet, I'm supposed to use both the eye ointment and the oral antibiotic. Yes, the 2nd vet know what the 1st vet prescribed.

I fed him meat from premium source at the farmer's market- basically what you described: grass-fed, no antibiotic/hormone.

Can the vet drain it? That wouldn't take care of everything, but it would make it less painful for your doggy.

I would follow vet instrutions if it was me, you don't want to fool around with his sight.

Weepy eyes are common in dogs and cats. Some worse than others. My daughter works at a vet. I give my cat wheatgrass. Squirt it in his mouth.or I rub it on his eye (the outside) He has a constant weepy eye. Allergies. My friend's dog has allergic reactions to the food she eats. Stay with the raw. Diet is a cause as much as it is for humans.

He doesn't have weepy eyes, though. He has large pus-filled sac near his eye.

It sounds like a clogged pore. I'd try the wheatgrass or pat with warm water, may open the pore. :)

Thanks everyone. I followed the vet's instructions and gave oral antibiotics & eye ointment. His eyelid is so swollen and a little worse. I'm very worried. I will try the warm water. I wish I can give him wheatgrass but I don't think I'll be able to make it in time since it takes 5+ days. Thanks again....

p.s. his whole upper eyelid is swollen, so I'm not sure if it's just a pimple.

Linda, if it's not looking any better I'd take him back for a recheck. Did the vet say how long it would be before you saw improvment? or did he say anything about bringing him back in for a recheck? sounds like he may need it drained but if it is infected DO NOT try that yourself.

I second that--do not try to drain it yourself, it should be done by a professional. Since a few days have already passed, I hope you take the little guy in for his care today. He's in danger of losing an eye or becoming septic.
