View Full Version : Stomach irritated by juicing?

Juicing gurus, I had a weird experience on Sunday after consuming a juice of beets, apple, celery, parsley and spinach. I got these veggies from the farmer's market I go to every Sunday. However, I don't juice that often, just consume them whole:) But last Sunday, I decided to do a big juice and after about half an hour of drinking it, my lower gut felt like it was on fire and I was bloaty and gaseous all day. I can't account for this to be the result of anything else but the veggie juice, as I woke up early feeling fine, took a long walk with the dog, went to the farmer's market. I felt absolutely no pain or discomfort at until the juice, so I assume it was that.
So my question is, do you think it was some bug on the veggies or just the consumption of so much juice when you're not used to it? Or something else?
Thanks for your thoughts!

I know they are very popular amongst raw foodies, but I personally don't drink juices usually. Not that I didn't like the taste, but in my opinion it's not best to "just swallow" without "ingesting" in the mouth. Therefore I prefer "soups" (like thick smoothies with some chunks in etc which I can "eat" rather than drink...).
Maybe you could try to leave the juice longer in your mouth to make it better digestible?
Sorry, I'm not a "juice-pro", but just an idea ;)
Hope that helps a little

I don't juice much now partially because I moved and can't find all the parts to my juicer - they seem to have disappeared! Anyway, when I first started drinking fresh juices I had a similar reaction except that in addition to the gassy feeling, I had to spend some serious time in the bathroom if you know what I mean. :o Especially when I drank any juice with apple in it. It's the same kind of thing that's happening to me now with the smoothies - my elimination is so much better. It may just be that your system has to get use to it. I love fresh juice and as soon as I locate where I packed those parts I will be juicing again.:D

It might be the beets. I've heard beets can do that. I try to eat beets in moderation. They are a major detoxifyer.
Also the size may matter. I have stomach issues and green juice helps wonders for my stomach. Although, because my body is repairing and rebuilding itself, I would get sick having more than a small glass at each sitting. Maybe try a small glass without the beets next time?? Good Luck!

You could experiment with mono-juicing to nail down the culprit, although it could be just the juicing in general. I think any change, even for the better, can really shake us up.
Making my green lemonade is very important to my vitality but I'm not good about swishing it around in my mouth like I think we should- down the hatch it goes.
but I agree about the beets. I can't handle them. I simply grate them on my salad to slow down that radical detoxing they trigger.
