Hi! I am new and came across the raw lifestyle when I was searching for homeopathic solutions for an under-active thyroid on the advice of my doctor. Before I fully commit, I want to know that it is something that I can stick with!

I have read that at least one meal should be a large salad; however, there is a problem. I hate hate hate lettuce, and I only like other greens like spinach and arrugala (sp?) when they are juiced. Does anyone have any suggestions for unique salads that include bases other than lettuces or greens? Thanks!

I want to know that it is something that I can stick with!!The raw food lifestyle is a process that is different for everyone. Some people start right off with 100% raw while others start much slower and ease into it. whatever way you do raw its a journey that grows with you and continues to grow as you learn and experience more.

Thanks! The diet for each raw food eater is different depending on preferences, tastes, and available produce. Many find the freedom of being able to eat anything as long as its raw to be liberating.

Ever had radicchio?

I LOVE this salad from "Living In The Raw" by Rose Lee Calabro.

Radicchio, Red Pepper and Avocado Salad

2 small heads radicchio (about 1/2 pound)
2 red bell peppers, cut into thin julliene strips
1 avocado, diced
4T virgin olive oil
2T lime juice
1/2 t Celtic salt

Combine radicchio, red bell peppers, and avocado in a large bowl. In a small bowl, mix olive oil, lime juice, and salt. Pour over salad and toss gently.

thats great that you like juicing them! keep that up!
have you tried them in a smoothie, with bananas or something else to mask the flavour? and if it is a texture problem that you have, that would be taken care of as well.

also, there are loads of raw veggies that i used to desPISE and now i love,
so sometimes just staying raw for a while can help in that area.

but if you are getting in lots of greens in juices and smoothies,
id say having a big green salad is not so vital.

also, you could try a green food powder.
without mine i know i wouldnt get enough greens :o

Another thing you can do is take the eggless egg salad and put it on greens or sprouts! It's yummy as all get out (I use the one from Rawvolution book) and then it's yummy and masks the taste of the greens and sprouts. HTH!:D

My cooked family loves this salad. I thought my mil was going to eat the whole bowl. ;)

The change in my salad appreciation has occurred since going all raw. I am eating my salads very simple now. I start with a 1/2 bag of one of the "Fresh Express" brand packaged salads, either baby lettuces or baby spinach. Next I put a garlic clove into a mortar and pestle (hand grinder) and grind the garlic into some "Barleans" brand total omega 3-6-9 master blend refrigerated oil. Pour the oil & garlic "dressing" onto the salad, mix, and eat. Try that some time for a delicious salad treat.

Sometimes when I'm out of lettuce I make a *salad* with all kinds of cut of veggies (tomatoes, zucchini, cauliflower, broccoli, peppers...) and then I put avocado and a little olive oil and mix it all up just like a salad...just no lettuce. Maybe doing something like that would work for you? No one said you HAVE to use lettuce! :D

In the winter I love making salads with lots of shredded root veggies - beetroot, carrots, etc. and sea veggies. They seem like a much more fulfilling meal than a standard salad and they look so pretty!

Thank you so much everyone! I'm sorry I took a few days to reply; as a college student, finals are coming and time is going by SO quickly!

I'm so happy that there are so many great choices! I especially love root vegetables, and I think for winter a salad of carrot, turnip, beet, etc. would be delicious! I guess I've been conditioned by so many years of yo-yo starvation dieting to think that salads MUST be mostly lettuce.

P.S. Could! I! Be! Anymore! In! Love! With! Exclamation! Points!? lol Sorry :)
