I've been on the "raw journery" about 4 months. Still consider myself a newbie and might for still awhile longer! I just wanted to share some ideas that have really helped me stay as raw as possible while I'm out and about.

I live in a rural area. The closest raw restaurant is 3 hours away (I'm going there next weekend-am SO excited!). My husband and I love to eat out and I've done extensive searching. There isn't even a place with a decent salad bar within 30 miles of us (unless you count Sizzler...which I SO don't-decent being the key word!).

Anyway, I know we are all at different levels of raw, but most places do have salads...unfortunately when the salad is your meal you want more than some iceberge lettuce and sad looking tomato slices! I've actually found that best places to eat out are pizza places (believe it or not). They almost always have salads of some sort and then I just look at their topping menu and ask them to add whatever they have- raw mushrooms, onions, bell pepper, tomato etc. This makes my husband very happy because he is not raw and loves pizza (he's been eating a lot of pizza lately!). Granted, it isn't organic and some of the dressings are questionable (but you can bring your own), but overall it has worked for me and is quite affordable as well.

The other places when I am really disorganized and find myself out and about are any deli-type place that makes sandwhiches. Same thing-they all have lettuce, sometimes even spinach, and I ask them to add a bunch of raw toppings. They can almost always accommodate and throw together a decent looking salad with a good amount of ingredients to fill me up.

Anyway, just wanted to share. Even when we are out, and not prepared, we can still stay raw, or pretty darn close!

Does anyone have any other tips for those of us who aren't fortunate to live around raw or even semi-remotely healthy eateries/stores and are on a budget?? (My nearest hfs is over 30 miles away...now they a nice salad bar, but it is pricey and out of the way.)

When I eat out, I usually just ask for an "entree-sized salad with no meat, dairy or dressing." And I have my own dressing in a with me in a small plastic container, sometimes I even bring an avocado and/or raw nuts.

Seems to work fine, and I sure do make a cheap date. ;)

By the way, that is so cool that you are going to get to go to a raw restaurant soon! That will be tons of fun! It's such a wonderful experience when I get to go to one. :)

I don't know if this would be a tip or not...
but I generally don't care what people think when I go out, about whether I'm rude or not.... But I'll stop in at a grocery store and pick up a fruit cup or something... I'll bring it wherever I have to!

I usually forgo a meal if it's a business lunch; but if I go out for socializing, I may call ahead and order a raw veg plate and salad (how hard is it for them to throw raw veggies together? No cooking or much prep involved), or I'll order a salad without dressing and use vinegar as a dressing. Most places have at least one fruit; but most times, I order a fruit plate. All of this is very simple for the staff.

Exactly. I always bring eat before I leave the house....and bring my own food (usually just a couple of apples in my pockets). If anyone hassles me about it (and they never have)......I just don't eat....and tell my loved ones I am there to spend time with THEM. If ANYONE hassles me....I let me feet do the talkin...
