Nevermind, I found the answer. It will not.
Has anyone used any other grain to give their chili more texture?

So if a grain does not sprout, does that mean it has been altered in some way? It seems like any grain should sprout.

It seems difficult to sprout barley but the question is - if it is soaked is it alive? Not everything sprouts. I am researching this now because where I live barley is abundant and organic but nuts are expensive, imported and often stale.
I just picked up some pearl barley the other day with hopes of sprouting it. Soaked them for about 3-4 hours, and already they started to go quite soft. After just over a day of sprouting a small tail had appeared, but because they smell so good, they got eaten. I'm trying again now to see how much it grows, but there is a definite change in smell...they seem less appetizing after sprouting for longer than a day or two.
I Put them in the blender with some honey and cocoa for a nice thick, almost malty chocolate shake.
