Don't laugh please - was just wondering if you open an avocado and there is brown on the inside does that mean it is rotten or just over ripe??? I am getting tired of throwing them out all the time. Thank you!

Some of the ones I've opened has a little bit of brown - I usually just scrape it out... seems to taste okay -- although- I've opened some that had A LOT of brown and they weren't the best tasting -- so they ended up in the compost...:( I hate throwing avos away too!!! its like throwing away gold!

That's been happening to me a lot also lately. What 's going on with the avos!! Are they old before we get them or what? The ones I've been opening are all brown and yucky inside even when not too soft on the outside, also the shells are thinner and hard. I've almost given up on buying them cause they are way too expensive to just throw in the garden.

Just thought of this. Do avos have a growing season? is it better to just buy them then?

wow, thanks for asking this question. i was just thinking the same thing this morning. yesterday i bought 8 avocados at $1.79 each - 14 bucks total! i opened up one and it was really brown inside, than 2 others, same thing. i was so looking forward to that spectactular avo taste, but i had to spice it up myself. :( i ended up scraping out the brown spots and making guac to mask the so-so taste.
the next time it happens, i'm taking them back to my co-op and exchange them or get a store credit. they're too expensive right now to be throwing away and wasting.

I have gotten a lot of brown on the inside avocados lately and also a lot of them have had lots of long stringy fiber strands in them. I hope this quality problem dosn't last long.

If you are purchasing California grown avos, then it should be noted that this is NOT the time of year for Haas avos which turn a dark color outside and are soft when they are at their ripened perfection. Winter avos usually stay green and firm through their ripe stage and, if they turn brown/black they are WAY over-ripe.
Winter varieties are more "watery" tasting and do not have that "rich, heavy" taste/feel of the summer Haas variety. I did just recently purchase a Haas avo that was grown in Chile (which I try not to do too often due to the environmental impact of transporting produce from all corners of the globe), however, I was jonesin' for that rich, luscious beauty!

I have been having a problem with brown spots in my avacados for months. Sometimes I was barely salvaging anything once I got the brown spots out. It was sooooo frustrating as I really wanted them to be a staple in my diet. Sometimes I was buying 4 - 6 at a time. I started saving my grocery receipts and returning them because this just isn't right. I figure that it everyone started returning the bad ones maybe someone will get the message. They are too expensive for us to take the loss. I live in the northeast U.S. and I always wondered if it was just me.
Blessings and peace,
Marcia

i think i can help with this :)
i worked in a restaurant and my boss knew loads about food..
its toootally fine to eat the brownish parts.
i do! all the time!
BUT
an good avo should NOT SMELL
when they start to go off they begin to smell kind of... like ammonia.
ill eat avo flesh thats gone brown,
but if it has a smell to it,
it goes straight into the compost.

The brown spots can either be bruises or over ripe places.
I eat them unless they smell funny.
But then, I'm not squeamish and I hate wasting anything.

I eat the brown spots (too much $ to waste...never had a smelly one!)
So far I have always had excellent avos except for this past trip to Acme today... all extra smooshy... no good! I like mine a little more firm :(

Thank you for all the good responses! I do eat the ones with small spots after I scrape out the spots. But lately they have been really "caked" with brown and stringy too - not very palatable. I wanted to get some avos to put on the salads and to use in place of olive oil (which gives me GI distress lately). Also, avos with cocoa and agave nectar - OMG!!!!
Was unable to make my dessert tonight because could not obtain any avos today - bummer :(
The spring will bring a better crop I am sure.

If they're brown and stringy, I'd take them back to the store and ask for my money back!

Hello,
In response to someones question about freezing avocados...yes you can. I have made up a bunch of gauc in the past when I was fasting and avo's were on sale and stuck it in the freezer. Just make sure you get all the air out.
