Hold the left side of the date with your left fingers
Hold the right side of the date with your right fingers
Dig in with your fingers and pull apart.
Take out the pit.

Very Carefully!:)
Sorry, couldn't stop myself, it just sounded like the set up for a joke.
I use a knife and just cut them in half. Then carefully and very closely check for unwanted house guest before I use them.

I think I'm going to have to pass on eating dates. I would die if I opened one with some extra "protein".

I use a paring knife because of that and I open EVERY date before I eat it. I have had a few dates with "extra protein" but thankfully they have all been caught. I never just pop them in my mouth - my dh does that eeeeeww. I'm not big on eating bugs....

It would be a shame to miss out on dates. I have been eating them almost daily for three years and have NEVER com across any extras. And not that I would mind as it shows you have an organic product.

One more thing... not sure if something special is done to medjools, if buggies just don't like them or what but I've never found any 'extra protein' in a medjool date. I've also never found anything in a date that I bought from the health food store, only ones I bought from organic date farms which makes me wonder about those HFS dates....

Advice> store in the fridge. Bo and I have both "enjoyed" the lil guys. But I'm a squirrel so it doesn't bother me as much.

I've been eating dates for 30 years and I have NEVER seen a bug in one.
If you store your dates in a cool place, in a tight lidded jar, you should have no problems.
