What is the closest, cheapest, easiest thing to a nut milk bag? Would cheesecloth work? Papaertowels? I'd rather not have to order one online if I can help it (as I'd like to pick something up I can use tomorrow for a recipe I want to make)

Run to your nearest Home Depot or Lowe's and ask for paint strainer bags. They should be nylon, have an elastic band around the top and look nearly identical to nut milk bags except for the drawstring and perhaps the shape. They're available in both 1 and 5 gallon sizes. If it makes you feel more comfortable, you can wash it before using!

Interesting, never heard of that before....thank you!

Also, how long do nut milks last in the fridge? I'd like to make some for the week, if possible....

:)

rawchicster, why thank you...I DO try! :p ;) :D But seriously, I can't take credit for that...I learned about it here some years ago, actually.

anyalynn, I find that nutmilks usually last 2-4 (5 would be kinda pushing it but I've done it) days DEPENDING on the coldness of your fridge along with how tightly you secure the jar it's in. I usually store mine in a mason jar. A while back when we had a very OLD fridge that didn't get too cold, nut milk would only last me 2 days and then it was tasting weird after that. But now, our fridge gets really cold (especially in the back) and so my milks have lasted me a good 4-5 days and still tastes good. You'll wanna shake it up as it does separate so don't judge based on how it looks after sitting in there a day or two...use your nose and just taste a little bit after a couple of days to see how it is.

That's a great idea about the paint strainers. In a pinch, here's what I did.

I used an old (clean, thank you!) pair of knee-high nylon hose my mother gave me that I *never* wear. After blending the nuts, I transferred to the hose. I did, admittedly, have to have hubby's help to hold stretch the opening. Then I hung it up on a nail and let the whey drip.

Hey, it worked!

LMAO cuz I've done that too! Last night, in fact. Great minds think alike, yeah? Teeeheeeee. :p I have a ziplock sandwich baggie of new knee-highs in the kitchen drawer for just that purpose.

Hint: What I do is transfer the nutmilk mixture from the blender into a mason jar, slip the hosiery over the top of the jar, then invert the contents of the jar into the hose and squeeze it out or let it drain. That way you don't need an extra pair of hands to strech the hose open. :D

Thanks for the tip on the mason jar! Great idea.

Hubby is enjoying all of my experimenting. I spent most of the day in the kitchen yesterday preparing various dishes. At one point he made his own salad, saying I've influenced him to better eating. Yay !

Even our dog enjoyed the flax/vegetable crisps I prepared for the dehydrator. My first attempt, and I we all enjoyed them!

You can also freeze your nutmilk.
Won't hurt it at all.. it'll still be alive.

Put it in a mason jar and leave at least 2 inches at the top.
Cap it and freeze it.

Or freeze it in ice cube trays, then remove and put in a freezer bag.
Then you can just take out what you need and thaw it the night before.

It might separate, but all you need to do is stir it.

You guys might find this funny (or not!), but I didn't have any 'bags' and the cheesecloth I got wasn't working for me so I have some panty hose knee highs that I've been storing for ages, since I don't wear them and haven't in forever, but they were still in the house. Anyway, I use that! Creates a small, manageable bag that I can squeeze to get the milk out of. All in all, that is the expensive way to go, I suppose, but since I had them anyway and didn't go out and buy any, when they get a hold or a run, I'll just use another one. :)
