Hi,

My mom, sister and I have been raw for about 6 months and are noticing we have big clumps of hair come out in the shower when washing our hair. Now this happened when I was SAD too. I'm in BC and it has gotten cooler here but it doesn't snow where I am.

Is there something I should be eating that I'm not or is it just a change in the temperature?

Hi spiralgirl

I've read and heard (and experienced!) that after a certain amount of time of going raw, your hair will fall out for a bit but then have some sort of 'adjusting' or re-newing period and it should stop. Haven't heard about the temperature thing though?

One thing I can suggest is, are you using shampoos/conditioners and all that sort of muck? If so, please stop ASAP and get on the whole 'no 'poo' thing. Where you use apple cider vinegar and sea salt rinses etc

Leeeeeeena,

Thanks, I was just guessing maybe it was a temperature thing but have not read that anywhere.

Yes, I'm using Shampoo and Conditioner. Why is that bad? Okay well I know it's probably due to the chemicals right? I make my own bath and beauty products that I sell and do make a shampoo bar that is natural so maybe I should switch to that. At this point I've never made my own shampoo and conditioner in liquid form. I just have to ask since you mentioned using ACV on your hair. Does that clean it? I've never heard of that. Now I'm curious.

Hair does go through a shedding period. The only time to really be concerned is if it isn't growing back, or if its coming put in HUGE clumps. Then I might go see a Doc.

slange001,

Thanks it's only when I wash my hair that I notice it. There was two clumps today when I washed my hair but yes I have a lot of hair and it does tend to grow all the time. Just thought I'd ask.

When I was on a very restrictive diet prior to raw, my hair started falling out--got noticeably thin (my hair--not me!). Lack of nutrients. When I started raw I could see all the little hairs growing back in. If it's the normal blob of hair in the shower drain, that could just be the usual periodic shedding that we all do. But if it's an unusual amount, you might need to check your menu for a balance of nutrients.

Pleased don't be unduly concerned. It's part of the process and you can trust the process of going raw. It will grow in more luxuriantly than ever if you stay raw. One thing you might want to consider is taking Hydrochloric acid with food if you feel like your stomach acid is low, but other than that, keep eating lots of greens and sea vegetables. Also, I've given up shampooing my hair and after a couple of months, it's finally self-regulating and looking nice and "full" instead of stringy and flat. Perhaps twice a week I put about a tablespoon of quality baking soda in a container and take it into the shower with me and put water in there too and massage my scalp with it and get good results. Much to my surprize. You should see the heads of hair of people who have been raw for years- just gorgeous!

Funny enough, I have been going bald for years and I remember on day 21 or so of my first 30-day raw experience, my gf at the time told me my hair was growing BACK on my head!

Don't worry, it will be temporary. Your hair will grow back in and be healthy and strong.

We started raw together and I am experiencing the same thing. I think it is because we have taken meat out of our diets. My poor husband has had to clean out the drain three times now.

I have tried Biotin and CLA but it has not helped much. Not sure what else to do either.

Hi Spiralgirl

Sorry haven't been back in a while. But yeah, get into the whole no 'poo thing, the ACV calms down the ends of the hair ie. if it goes super dry they get 'fixed' or something? I really have no idea how it works but it really does.

Here's this:

http://www.naturalfamilyonline.com/go/index.php/389/why-you-should-go-no-poo/

Anyways, I haven't used shampoo for 14 weeks and three days now and have really really REALLY noticed the difference. I'm only 21 and was pretty much beginning to lose a ton of my hair but after no 'poo it's way way thicker, and smoother and silkier and shinier and all the rest of it. It also grows a lot, lot, lot quicker. But the beauty of it really is the no chemicals.

Give it a go. I know there are plenty of other postings about it on here somewhere.

Goodluck.

It happens. I'm going through about my 5th time currently. It'll stop.

I've lost my hair before like that, but I was REALLY stressed. I know I was getting a full array of nutrients...so maybe stress?

I am not stressed so I don't think that is it. I also don't think it is a coincidence that Spiralgirl and I started at the same time and are both losing hair.

Hi,

My sister went to the doctor to get checked out and found out she is really low in iron. What raw foods are best for maximum iron? I know kale is one of them and I know you can buy liquid iron at the health food store. I'm guessing that is why her and I are losing our hair.
