View Full Version : Stomach Problems since going raw...

It's been about a month and I'm 99% raw, with the occasional cooked soup or something along that lines. For the past week off and on, it seems like I have indigestion, or an upset stomach. I really am not sure which one because I've never had stomach problems. I just want to curl up into a ball.
Today for instance, as I type, I am so sick. For lunch, I stopped off at a salad bar and made a salad. My first choice was to go to this raw cafe, but DH didn't have that long of a lunch break... I ate the salad, but really didn't "want" too, but was starving. A few hours later, I'm sicker than a dog. It's the same feeling. It almost feels like I would feel better if I threw up, but I don't feel the need to do that...
Has anyone experienced stomach issues since going raw? I mainly eat green smoothies, salads, occasional dehyrdated snacks, and fruit. Pretty much what I ate before, just without it being cooked or meats etc.
Any insight would be great.

Mommyinthecountry,
I've been 100% raw for five and a half months and the last two days I've had this upset stomach, it feels like when you get nervous and I still have it. It started for me Monday night and was really nervous feeling and I couldn't sleep all night. Thought I was just stressed about something but it wouldn't go away even if I did deep breathing. So last night I used my warm cat (it's a bag made out of beens with a cat cover on it. You take off the cover and heat it in the microwave. Anyway slept with that last night and stress oil on my nose and it really helped. It's less today and I think it's a detox thing happening. My sister who has been raw for 6 months had the same thing happen for three days and it left her.
Not to gross you out but today I had a big bowel movement and think that had something to do with it.
Yes, during the initial stages of raw I also had tummy aches here and there. Everyone detoxes differently. Also my sister can't eat salad out anymore sinc e they put nitrates on it to keep it fresh. Whenever she meets someone for a salad at a restaurant she gets sick. Another thing to consider if you ever do eat out is to buy enzyme tablets to take before a meal to help with digestion.

Thanks so much for your response. I've been doing that- using my rice filled sock to keep warmth on my belly- it seems to help and taking warm baths with a warm wash cloth. It's just the weirdest feeling. My hubby keeps asking me if i'm stressed out, but i've been VERY stressed in the past but never felt like this! Thanks for your input. I was wondering if it was a detox thing too...but just didn't know!!

you know i had stomach issues too....still do- it's like it's bloated...and then just sick and kind of hurts- I"M SOOOOOOOO FRUSTRATED i wanted to eat a cooked meal and not have to feel like i have a balloon in my belly (but i probably would feel even worse). It's making my patience run out :( i don't know what to do- i try drinking more water now and figure out which foods cause this

Riiiya,
Others on here that have been raw may be of more help. My detox was pretty bad the firs few months. I still have heavy bowel movements and know I'm still cleaning out. It's hard for me to believe how much I had packed into my body when eating SAD (I ate a lot of junk food-chips, chocolate, cinnamon buns etc.) I don't know how long is a normal time period as I know everyone detoxes differently but keep an eye on it. How long have you been raw?

let's see... 3 month. But then again i DID have times when i ate cooked- not animal products but soups for example when i was in social situations. So it hasn't been fair 3 month, but the best to my ability. I know i shouldn't quit- I CAN'T!! i know this is the ultimate diet, i can't start eating carcinogens lol.... it's just that it gets frustrated when i don't feel good because of stomach problems
ahh thanks for your reply btw!
p.s. can someone send me a link to proper raw food combining please??

Hi, see if this one works...

It's in PDF format.
Have you tried a colonic? I've had stomach issues my entire life... gas, discomfort, indigestion... colonics seem to improve it entirely. Also I took cinnamon, peppermint and chamomile extract. I'm on day 10 of a juice fast, and let me tell you all of these things combined= brand new tummy and feeling great!

I have stomach problems but I have gastroparsis. That's nerve damage caused by diabetes. Different foods affect people different ways. For me, salad greens seem to be the worse. I was all pukey last night because of the small salad I ate. I seem to be able to digest things like carrots, tomatoes, peppers and onions pretty well. Not sure why the greens are so hard on me. But they are.

Ooh what a nice easy chart!! Thanks a lot. that's good for the start. BTW does Alissa's book have a chapter on food combining? i need to get her book soon, i'm trying to get the money first :)
I haven't tried colonics but seems like that would be a good idea in the nearest future. I also want to really monitor what i eat and see WHAT it is that i do wrong
again- thanks!

Anyone else? It's weird because I"m not eating any new foods, just the same without it being cooked. I'm glad I'm not alone. My aunt was yelling at me saying I'm probably detoxing heavily and it's all going in DD who is still breastfeeding.

I got terribly sick recently when I ate salad with spinach leaves kale in it, it has really put me off salad :( The pain was awful before i was sick...I had to use a hot water bottle too & was seriously considering going to hospital i was in that much pain. I think my body cant handle the greens yet. im going to try smoothies once i get over the yukky feeling I have when I think of spinach opr kale ;)

ooh, be really careful detoxing while breast feeding. I have heard from doctors and several raw resources that the toxins will come out in the breast milk, which is why they do not advice fasts while breast feeding.
