It was really interesting and good. Seems like they are in season now. Would love to know how you guys eat them.

mmmm yum. I like 'em thinly sliced on a mandolin, like a fancy dessert. My favorite way is to eat them very ripe, without doing anything to 'em. Yum!

Just had me some. They are everywhere now. I peel them and slice them up, just like I eat my mangoes. They taste like mangoes too but a little sweeter even.

I tried one several months ago, and HATED every last bit of it, lol!

I just bought some more a couple of days ago, and I actually kind of like them now! My 3 year old LOVES them, he's eaten 4 or 5 already today, lol.

We haven't done anything special with them. We just pop the top off, and eat 'em like an apple.

i WORSHIP persimmons!!

well not really :o but i adore them with every cell of my body. the Real ones however- the ones i used to get back in Ukraine, imported from Spain..... so far, the kinds i've been trying in the US were disappointing (mostly because they're picked when green)... ahh the real persimmon is enlongated and mushy and juicy and with pits!! :D oh persimmons!

p.s. i just eat them like an apple....how can you peel them? well i guess the hard pumpkin-shape ones can be peeled, but not the super ripe longer ones

mmmm, love persimmons...

Hachiya (http://www1.istockphoto.com/file_thumbview_approve/341570/2/istockphoto_341570_ripe_persimmons.jpg) is the only kind I've eaten so far, perfect when they are oober soft...soo good! I've had a few with one big pit in the middle, others with pit pieces throughout, and some with no pit at all.

I'm thinking about giving Fuyu persimmons a try. They are flatter and resemble tiny pumpkins...sort of. I understand that you can eat those while they are still pretty firm, like an apple.

...I forgot to say that I just eat them straight :)

I don't necessarily plan/want to get married, but i would marry a hachiya persimmon. I think that says it all :D

My absolute favorite edible item

I just tried one for the first time last year when I first went raw. I just slice it and eat it. But they are soo sweet and rich I can't eat the whole thing in one sitting!

I've seen LOTS of persimmons at the store. How do I know when they are ripe? The ones I've seen are orangey-yellow looking like a small pumpkin....do you eat them peel and all...and are they supposed to be soft, or firm like an apple????

Okay, there are two types of persimmonds commonly found in stores. One is okay to eat when not soft, it's still ripe and good eatin', and the other one has to be jelly soft in order to be ate. But I can't remember which is which.....

I can't usually control myself and just suck those lovely things down. But sometimes I make pudding with a little splash of vanilla extract, fresh grating of nutmeg, a little pinch of cinnamon. I bet one of our talented chefs on the board could run with that and dress up that recipe.

i eat them with avocados, mmm yum! it's an interesting flavor combo. i've been experimenting with contrasting flavors lately and this one is a hit with me. probably not for everyone, but i like it. ;)

I believe the ones that you have seen may be Fuyu (http://www.parisist.com/attachments/parisist_jean/Persimmons.JPG) persimmons, and from what I understand they can be eaten while still firm. I'm guessing that you could eat the peel as some say a Fuyu is akin to a crisp apple, but I've not tried any Fuyu persimmons, so

The only other type that I'm familiar with it Hachiya (http://www1.istockphoto.com/file_thumbview_approve/341570/2/istockphoto_341570_ripe_persimmons.jpg), and those need to be very, very soft before you can eat them. Munch on them before they are ready and your mouth will feel like you've just eaten cotton, literally. But when completely ripe, they are YUMMY. I'm sure you could eat the peel on Hichiyas, but I like to scoop out the succulent insides and leave the peel behind.

how can you peel them?
With one of those (http://nl.wikipedia.org/wiki/Afbeelding:Dunschiller.jpg). :)

I've only seen the Fuyu ones, though.

Hi, today a friend cut open and ate some of a Hachiya persimmon that was not yet ripe and he told me his tongue went numb??? Has that happened to anyone else? Today, i tried a sharon fruit, very similar to persimmon but oh so much sweeter and a bit bigger! Really good!

Tomorrow I am running to the store to get a persimmon for that lovely avocado dish crystalgoneraw suggested...can't wait to try it. The grocery clerks at my local japanese market said (in my best japanese accent) 'oh persimmon good, you try, like an apple, must be hard, very good'. I will try to find out exactly what type of persimmons they are.

I think I can answer this one.

The persimmon with the little point on the end and a more enlongated shape has to be super soft to be enjoyed or it will dry your tongue right out.

The one that is round and a little squat can be eaten like an apple and is ripe in the harder state. I go for those 90% of the time. They are a little more tart than the first kind but quite good!
