Hello all,

I've been a lurker here for quite a while, but havn't talked much. (I'm a bit shy)

But I do have a question about the whole calcium/strong bones/healing connection. My mother (who is 66) has had osteoperosis for nearly 10 years now and I know that it is a hereditary disease. I am 33 and have broken my back, foot and now (3 days ago) broke my ankle in a biking accident. So my question to you all is, how strong is the connection between calcium and bone strength? I know it takes a lot more than just calcium to keep bones healthy. I weight lift pretty intensely and regularly, knowing that doing such helps keep bones strong and healthy. But what raw foods would be the best to eat for strengthening and healing broken bones? I know broccoli is high in calcium, but what else should I be eating to help the healing process? I also have several torn ligaments and tendons in the ankle that need healing. I am in a cast and will be on crutches for several weeks. I've been prescribed painkillers, which I refuse to take. But other than rest, ice, elevation, compression what kind of healing/natural/raw foods can I be eating to help aid a traumatic injury and help ease pain?

Thanks in advance for any help you can give me.

Sesame seeds are very high in calcium!

Here's a link to a great recipe for chocolate milk using sesame seeds (my recipe of course :p  :D)

- a variety of dark leafy greens, particularly via green smoothies so that they're easily digestible

- seaweed, ahh... sea vegetables, very worth playing with until you find some ways that you like to consume it

- citrus, for the Vit.C, so the body can absorb calcium

- sunshine! and you probably know weight-bearing exercise

And a Warm Welcome!!!

WOW Jenna, I found that Nesquick ad!!! Appaling indeed!!! What have we evolved to as a species that we now praise the rejection of all things nurturing and healthy in favor of manufactured/chemically altered substances that will ultimately bring about our premature death and chronic illness?!! What a sad world we live in!!!

hi! wow am i ever glad you asked this because i'm so excited to share what i've been learning about this very thing. i have been tossing this question around for some time now....here's what i've learned through some excellent sources:

FIRST OF ALL:
-the countries with the highest milk/calcium supplement intake levels are the countries with the highest osteoperosis.

- in canada (and the # is probably the same or similiar in the us) the rda for a woman between ages 19-50 needs 1000mg calcium/ day. this figure seemed strangely high to me, as, unless you consume milk...it's not incredibly easy to obtain that # (you can but you have to juice a ton of dark greens everyday - so it's possible...but is this nessisary...is this what our ancestors did? are the questions i asked). one of my friends is one of the top nutritionists in canada and she was hired to work on the rda's for the current canadian food guide. she told me that ALL the nutritionist she worked with (even the dairy drinking ones) said that the calcium rda should be reduced..but they HAD TO SET IT AT THAT LEVEL AS THE "DAIRY FARMERS OF CANADA" WHERE FUNDING THE CANADIAN FOOD GUIDE!!

NEXT:

- i found out from natalie rose that...guess what...the two countries with the HIGHEST bone density and lowest osteoperosis are #1 africa and #2 Japan. the women in these countries consume on average 300-450 mg of calcium per day AND NOT FROM DAIRY BUT FROM VEGTABLES (mainly seaweeds) and some from fish bones (most africans are lactose intolerant and can't drink milk anyway). NOTE: when these people move to north america and start our diet, they fall victom to this disease the same as the rest of us. in fact african americans (living in america) are the highest group to get osteroperosis...interesting eh? they go from the best bone density to the worst.
i don't know about you, but i'd rather take a clue from what the people in those countries are doing (countries where in certain towns noone has ever even heard that such a disease as osteroperosis exists) rather than do what we're told to do here in north america (one of the highest osteoperosis rates).

S0 THEN:
-i learned how calcium is not even what gives bones strength! remember how easy it is to snap a piece of chalk? well guess what that's made out of?....calcium carbonate, almost 100% it's not a 'stronge' mineral. so let's just get this straight. regardless what we've been brainwashed with.
now, calcium IS IMPORTANT but it MUST be combined with other minerals to make stronge bones. minerals like magnesium and silica. vitamin k is so essential to bone strength because it is one of the main nutrients the body MUST HAVE in order to transport calcium from the blood and put it in the bones...got that? no vit k...means less transport of calcium to bones! we are also told to stay out of the sun, when vitamin d is essential to bone building...again, very interesting. also, no magnesium in diet...means...no calcium binding to the bone.
magnesium is the # one mineral definciency in north america and calcium can NOT be bound to the bone with out magnesium!! is this getting you mad or what?! for not being told these things!!! i repeat, magnesium is the NUMBER ONE mineral deficiency in north america!!

the important bone nutrients come from raw dark greens (calcium and vit K and magnesium) and sea weeds(bone building minerals and vit k), nettles (silica), raw chocolate (high magnesium).

i am loading up on the foods rich in all these sources, being that i live in canada i also take a vit d supplement in the winter...but NO calcium supplement (just one good calcium rich dark green drink/day). i'm taking raw chocolate every day to load up on mag and i will start eating nettles soon too....these grow almost everywhere in the world.

IT GETS WORSE:
there is such a thing as too much calcium in the body (for all you supplement takers)...it is called the 'calcium score' doctors know all about it...but they don't tell us!!
it is all explained in the video clips below:
PLEASE watch these videos below...it'll take about an hour to watch them all, but i tell you it is life changeing. i am so greatful i found them and found out about what calcium does to your body if you've got to much. by the way, after i watched these videos i double checked the info with friends of mine who are in 5th and 6th year med school aswell as i checked out articles in time magazine...and most of this info checks out as true:

Do some research on Chia Seeds. They have more calcium than milk or greens.

Great post, JenJen! I've always questioned the 1000 mg of calcium that we're supposed to ingest. When have women ever been able to drink that much dairy in our historical past?

I watched all of the David Wolfe videos from You Tube that I could find, I didn't know he was such an intriguing character! He talks about the document he gives out, about how to dissolve the calcification, he says it is floating around on the internet. Anyone know where to find that??? Or anyone have the nuts and bolts of that info???

It's so funny that the nano bacteria calcification has been brought up on here. Soon after I viewed David Wolfe's clips on Youtube I started to do my own research on the subject. I too am still looking for the free ebook that David said he would provide on the steps to getting rid of the nano bacteria.

The calcium issue has been one of my main focus points recently. The fact that nano bacteria is in the food supply is scary and that it's in calcium supplements is even scarier. Finding out that magnesium and silica are more important than calcium overall because they convert into calcium is a very important piece of information. I have been looking for a list of foods that are high in magnesium.

I know that raw chocolate is probably the highest and I'm sure other superfoods aren't too far behind, but I'm looking for every day foods. My youngest brother is 13 and my parents are converting him to a more natural food diet with no dairy. He is very picky to begin with and they are concerned because he is still growing. He won't touch raw chocolate.

Does anyone know where I could find a legit list of foods with the highest content of magnesium? Even other lists for iron, zinc, ect. would be helpful.

where did you get the statistic about african americans being the highest for osteoporosis? is it in the video? did you mean africans that move to the states or black people in general?

i'm taking nutrition in university right now, that's where i got the statistic. the statistic is africa is the highest level of bone density (stronge bones) and they consume on average 400 mg cal/day. when these people move to the usa and begin the typical north american diet they drop down to the lowest level of bone density group.

This is some GREAT INFO! I don't have much to add, except that fresh, raw ginger for the inflamation and pain while your healing. You can make a raw type of gingerale with raw ginger, fresh lime and lemon juice and your choice of raw sweetner, I like raw honey. Mix well, let sit at room temp for 2 days then strain or transfer to fridge and strain as you pour in your glass. For measurements, I use 1/4 cup fresh grated ginger, 1/4 cup freshly pressed lime juice, 1 freshly juiced lemon and 1/4-1/2 cup raw honey (depending on your tastes) and than top off the jar with water, I use quart mason jars and fill to nearly the top with only an inch or half inch of space.

HTH!

As most people know, diseases run in families. So do diets. Most likely people eat the same food their ancestors eat. If a certain diet causes a certain disease, by changing ones diet one could get off the inherted disease train.

This is something not too many people talk about too. We basically eat a European diet. Also, our food doesn't have much nutrition in it.
