Hello to everyone and thank you to ANYONE who can offer some insight. I have been raw for quite some time and am not starting a lengthy supervised juice fast. I have to say...I have never felt worse! By that I mean my depression is off of the charts! I am not suicidal or anything but my emotions are soooo low - this is strange as I was always a very happy person - albeit covering up some distress with food - but this new low is incredible. I have my rosary beads in hand and am praying but I just wonder if I am making more of a mistake by fasting and being raw- or can it really help flush out toxins and clear up these awful feelings? Any insight would be great!

I have been all raw since Aug 1st and I also have noticed many of the things that you mention in your post. My worst detox experience so far was my lips. They got red, puffy, and sensitive. It was uncomfortable for a couple of weeks, but that passed. I also found myself dealing with some emotional issues and until you mentioned it I had not considered the possibility that this was a result of no longer using food as a way to cover or mask my emotions by eating. Thats a very interesting idea and I'll have to think about that.
The things that have helped me the most as far as detox is concerned is to get PLENTY of fiber and water to help move out the toxins. Also jumping on my rebounder to help move toxins out of my lymphatic system I believe has helped a lot.

Hi janem!
Yep...when you go raw or even fast - basically once we start to eliminate from our body the things we used to stuff emotions down with (food, drink, coffee, alcohol, drugs, etc. etc.) then it's like a bandaid being ripped off of a still-open wound. All the "stuff" comes to the surface so that it can be dealt with properly.
Emotional detox is very real but if you keep on with eating raw and allowing your body to go through the necessary physical and emotional detox, then it will get better! I've read many stories of people right on this very forum who have gotten off of anti-depressant meds or who just have better dispositions and are calmer since having gone raw. I know MY mood has gotten better...but yes, when first starting out you can get kinda irritable and moody and emotional but it does pass. (oh...and prayer and meditation help too! ;) )

Hi janem,
first of all, give yourself a huge pat on the back for even contemplating a juice fast - i think it's brave.
and question for you: do you think your low emotions might have more to do with the prospect of the juice fast and maybe it feels daunting, rather than the food itself?
just a thought - and hope i don't sound like a self-help book!

Oh Alicia! Thank you for your response! You do not sound daunting at all! I am not sure where they are coming from. I amenvious of my coworkers who religiously count points and lose weight on cookde foods as I am embarking on this fast for weight loss as well as health issues - so you are probably right! I see you are from Boston!! I went to the BEST colon hydrotherapist on Market Street just outside Boston - forgot the name!
