HELLO!

It's funny I eat soooo simply during the summer, ya know fresh fruit and salads. I honestly do not touch my dehydrator during the summer months and any nuts I eat "neat" meaning no pates, cheeses etc.

So obviously it's not summer any longer and I just wanted to share with you what's in my fridge. I do a menu at the beginning of every month of recipes I would like to do. Sometime I get to all of them in a month sometime in two weeks! I have also been known to hardly touch the menu at all!

What was really interesting about shoping for theis menu was that it did not cost that much at all  . This was because I am at that point when I have so many of the ingredients already in my panrty. Had I tried to do this at the beginning of my raw journey I would have been bankrupt!

So the pictures are of what I currently have in my fridge/freezer and a pic of my current menu.

Fridge First Shelf:

Alissa's Pad Thai sauce (Living on Live Food)
Mixed berry sauce for cheesecake
Cream of tomato soup (Raw Food Made Easy)

Apple cookies (RawVolution restaurant)
Crust
Apple walnut cookie dough (DVD: RAW The Living Food Diet)
Carrot Lime soup (Raw Food Real World)

Herb Cheese Filling (www.therawtable.net)
Spinach & Herb cracker dough (www.therawtable.net)
Green Chive Cheese (DVD: RAW The Living Food Diet)

Fridge Second Shelf:

Soaked Walnuts & Sunflower Seed (Snowdrops Seseme Chicken)
"Cadburys" Fruit & Nut
Zucchini/courgette (Alissa's Lasagna; Living on Live Food)
Miso (Snowdrops Sesame Chicken)

Fridge Third Shelf:

Oats (soaking for porrage RFRW)

Freezer:

Cheesecake (www.purelydelicious.net)
SuperMaca Candy

This is not everything but its what I have that has been "prepared".

PS: For those of you just reading I continue with additional tips throughout this ENTIRE thread.:D Post #99, yes #99 has a comprehensive pantry list

So are you saying that you make up cracker dough and pie crust dough ahead of time and just refridgerate them until you are ready to dehydrate the crackers or make a pie? If so, how long does that last in the fridge?

So are you saying that you make up cracker dough and pie crust dough ahead of time and just refridgerate them until you are ready to dehydrate the crackers or make a pie? If so, how long does that last in the fridge?

Yes, I keep several crusts/crumbles on hand. THEY LAST FOREVER. I even like to take a crumble and dehydrate it for a few days. Then I store it just in the pantry. They are good also stored in the freezer.

I have never been fond of the typical soft raw crust so the crusts I use I dehydrate until crisp! :)

I love the crusts by Renee Loux Underkoffler in her book Living Cuisine.

Such As:

Almond-Vanilla Crumble Crust
Heavenly Hazelnut Shell
Pecan Graham Cracker Crust
Walnut Crumb Crust
Buckwheat Crumble Crust
Good Oat Crust

You can also form pie crusts in a pie plate put in a layer of wax paper and do it again repeating until you have lots of pre formed crusts just waiting for you in the freezer!

With cracker dough the shelf life is much shorter but what I do is "bake" off a tray or two at a time so I can be using the other trays as I only have a 4 tray Excalibur (I am waiting for Alissas stainless dehydrator to come out early next year). What happens with the dough is it will ferment so if you see bubbles it has gone off. I would say it will last you a good week.

The pate's and cheese last a LONG time for me. I also cover the tops with wax paper to keep as much air as possible out and that helps.

HELLO!

I get a lot of email asking how I organise it all and the biggest plus is that I have a very well stocked kitchen. I'm not referring to the big guns like the ViaMix and the Excaibur but to the food.

PLEASE PLEASE dont feel you have to have your kitchen this way to be raw. I have built this (raw kitchen) up over the past THREE years.

I just wanted to pass on a handfull of thing that have really helped make day to day prep easier.

Cheers,

EPPP

************************************************** ********

1. My drinks list: This is an at a glance list of all the raw drinks I can make. It is a sesonal list; this one posted is from summer. each one is also marked with a cookbook & page number code.

2. Raw Cupboard: I keep my Raw books here as well as pantry items that I keep in smaller quantities. Also my Raw Box & Binders - I'll go into this later.

3. Bottles: These are what I store smoothies and drinks in. Oddly I have found the Nalgene keep smoothies fresher than in glass which I tried first.

4. Pantry: As you can see I store my bulk dry Items in these great glass jars. I also have the same jars in double that size for crackers. I LOVE these jars!

5. Paper Bag Veg Storage: I think is my best discovery. I have tried everything to extend veggie shelf life; discs, green bags etc. and non of these worked to my satisfation.

What I have found is that a double or triple layer of those paper bags you get in the veg section keep the veg really fresh in the fridge! It has to be a min of two layers. After you use the bags just put them out of the way to dry out and then you can use them again & again.

I want to add that I have removed both veg drawers from the fridge as this affored me lots more room for my veggie paper bags. I also stand the bags up in the door where the mayo & tomato sauce used to be.!

Ha ha ha, that's ME too!

I am most definatly not the uber organised "A" personality - I am supremely unorganised - really! My saving grace is that my "once a month nesting" is very powerful and that's how I keep it all together. he he he :p .

The DVD is RAW The Living food Diet. I would strongly recommend this very well done DVD - AFTER Alissa's Living on Live Food DVD of coarse :o !

Here is the Amazon link:

1. Parsley/Cilantro Storage: With some fresh herbs I cut a bit off the bottom and stick in a glass of water. This REALLY keeps them fresh. Keep topping it up as they get thirsty!

2. Smoothies Container: This is THE BEST for on the go smoothie drinking. It's by Rubbermaid. It has a great easy to hold shape, wide but not too wide drink spout and a lid that doesnt leak when dropped!

3. Spice Cupboard: This is for all the bits and pieces. Agave, Spices, Cocoa butter, hemp, maca etc.

4. Spinach Storage: Spinach goes slimy quickly - I really dislike slimy spinach!!! So I took a spinach container and cut large holes all over in cluding top and bottom. I then lined it with double papper towels, enough to hang over both sides. I then devide the spinach with additional layers in between. The paper towels can be left out to dry when all done and resue again. Water and moisture are not spinach friend! My spinach never goes off using this method!:p (Costco)

5. Fruit Bin: Easy for kids to reach in. I line each with either paper bags or paper towels. Wish I had those $$$ wooden veg storage boxes from Williams Sonoma!

I still have one more organising tip to come but it is late; I will it on another post tomorrow:o Enjoy!

Thanks so much everyone for you kind words, I really appreciate them :o !

OK well now down to the nitty gritty. . . .

I have several areas in which I organise my recipes etc. The first stop is The Box.

1. The White Box: I keep this box near the PC so that everytime I print out a recipe from a forum or blog I just put it in the box. ( www.thecontainerstore.com ) I also keep my raw magazines in here such as Purely Delicious

2. The Green Binder: Firstly this binder is amazing in the way it is formated which makes it perfect for organising your raw meal planning. Unfortunatly the link does not show all the bits inside so go have a look for one if you can.

It has five organising sections and a pad of paper at the back. I use the section for: (the photo has all the bits layed out for you)

-this weeks menu
-chosen printed/copied recipes for the week
-completed recipes with my notes and a 1-4 star rating
-recipes to try in the near future
-a legend page of my raw books

When a week/month is done I put all the recipes back into the box or the other cookbook recipe binder. I even keep the recipes that were vile so I know not to do them again! There are some choco mousse pies that are great and some or yucky, it's easy to forget which ones you liked.

3. Photo Copies & The Cookbook Recipe Binder: Every recipe I do from a book I photocopy and put in a binder, this makes it much easier to work with especially as I make lots of notes. The finished notes I transfer to the book if/when I get the time.

4. PC Photos: I try to photo graph every worthy recipe as I am greatly stimulated by visuals. As you can see from mt PC screen I have many. Also look at the left of the screen and you will see how many files I have to oragnise them all.

6. The simple Recipe Box: I keep ONLY my favorite no fail will make again & again recipes; no junk in here. This way I keep thm in easy reach. I only recently started this and it's been a huge help. I actually have the card filed by family member so I can keep trac of who likes what.

As you have seen in other posts I also put up copies of menus on my kitchen cupboard for at a glance info as I have a mind like a seive :o !

Stay tuned for more. . .
All the best,
EPPP

PS: to all you newbies put your location on your stats as I love to glance and see where everyone is!

Wow! I have EXACTLY the same set up for my spinach! I have one of those same Earthbound farms boxes that I put my washed farmers market spinach in with paper towel layers! too funny. Now to get the rest of my kitchen looking like yours....

I love The Container Store (http://www.containerstore.com/browse/index.jhtml?CATID=6) - they have many many kinds of kitchen storage options. I will be making a trip there soon!

Hi Again,

Those of you who have been around for awhile will recognise these but I just wanted to introduce them to those newer to the program as I still recieve emails from people requesting the files.

When I first started on this journey I developed what I call the Menu Tracker. This is a wonderful tool I used for the first year or so until I "got it" with regards to the timimg of sprouting, soaking & dehydrating. I then moved on to the "Box & Binder" way listed in post #19 of this Thread.

What's great about the MT is that it has columns to note soaking/dehydrating times and start/finish times. Along with areas for the cookbook name ,page, recipe rating & notes.

The Shopping List I still continue to use to this day. If you request the file for this you can then change it to reflect the shops you frequent.

With the files I also send details as to how to best use these. if you do request the files and I do not respond to you with in a week please send me the mail again stating "second request".:o

Cheers,

EPPP

EPPP,

Thank you for the FANTASTIC tips. I thought I had a sense of organization until I saw and read yours. Will be incorporating quite a few of them immediately and checking the menu tracker--will help my sievelike mind, too.
Especially avoiding repeats of a "yuck" recipe.

Ok, I cleaned the fridge today. Took all my raw goodness and removed it. And moved it to a better home. The garage. hah! We have an upright freezer and a side by side fridge out there. I removed the cooked foods from the refrigerator side and moved them to the kitchen for the SAD eaters. I claim the one half of the 2 refrigerators for tigger! AND the full sized freezer is not plugged in and now is converted into my raw storage for everything else. Was not being used anyway. Now the family has the entire kitchen with cabinets and fridge to themselves and I have my little space. Now if they can not keep themselves organized it will at least not be the demise of my fresh goodies!:) I HATE when I buy something and then it spoils because it gets buried under a pile of stuff!

And they can have some of my stuff IFF they put it away properly. They have their own bowls of fruits and veggies. Sound mean, don't I? But they are not interested in anything raw -- sorta the Mason/Dixon line of raw/sad here. hee! Their flag has a turkey leg on it, mine has fresh fruits! I share....but now I can find it! (and I do not have to see all the cooked things that would normally tempt me!;) )

Thanks for getting me motivated to get things in order!:D

EPP, thank you for your tips, you really are very organized.

The ONLY way I found to really organize my favorite recipies is to attatch the ones I like on the inside of my cubbord doors. Then all I have ta do is simply open one of my many doors to find the recipies waiting for me....:) They are all near my work areas so it's pretty convenient for me as I'm tall and the counters are too low as it is, and when I try to read a recipie from the counter, it's pretty difficult.

Wow, the storage system you've developed... tee hee, it's great.

Love it! I do the same thing because I am tall (5'11) too! I always tape whatever recipe I am working on to the cupboard! And the few I use all the time I have taped to the inside. . .great minds think alike! My dream is to have a kitchen with all the counters raised about five inches higher with NO lower cabinet storage!!

What an awesome thread!! I am so inspired! :) Thanks EPPP for sharing your wonderful organizing tips.

I just came across a site for glass jars that I wanted to pass along to anyone who's interested. :) The prices are very reasonable. I personally have been looking for jars with a white lid instead of the 2 piece mason jar lids and was so excited to have come across this site. :)

Excellent! Congratulations - I know it can be tricky in smaller London kitchens. In my first flat there I could touch all four walls by just standing in the center and moving in a circle! I do hope yours is a tad bit bigger :o !

thus was a response I gave earlier and wanted to share it here too.

I carry a little photo book of fab raw food creations I have found on several raw sites & blogs to whip out and show people what amazing raw foods I can eat. This generally stops people dead in their tracks! I also have preprinted notes with great raw sites to give them at the same time and suggest they investigate further if they are interested about finding out more.

The more confidant you become with raw the less others opinions will bother you. Humans can be like wild animals; they sense when you are open to attack. If you carry yourself proud and not in an appologising manner you will end up informing people about raw instead of defending it!

Cheers,

EPPP

I had a friend over the other day and she couldn't get over how much produce we had on our counter tops ~ we were laughing about how my family will eat all that food and hers would maybe eat one bunch of bananas in one week. In fact she gave me 3 bananas last week because they were getting brown and her family wouldn't eat them like that. We had a good chuckle. So anyway, thought I'd post a pic of my countertop and my pantry while I was at it. BTW... Alissa's book always sits on my countertop in that holder and I am really thankful you can't see the bent pages and the food stains in the pic! LOL! :D Have a great day! P.S. I couldn't get all the food in one pic ~ crazy! There are pineapples in the backround and a bowl of fruit behind the book. ROFL!

Alissa's book even got a dunking in my bath the first few days I was reading it (it's a bit heavy :o ). The entire last 1/2" of mine is glued stuck!

Love your counters; looks like you are preparing for a photoshoot, all those yummy fruity colours! It kiils me when speople who dont know us come over and make a comment like "where's all the real food" ?

HAHAHA! Where's all the real food ~ I get that from the in-laws. HYSTERICAL! LOL. And yes, I too can barely get the last half of my book unstuck. That cracks me up. Dh always laughs when he hears me trying to get the pages apart without tearing them. :D

EPPP - the avatar is a pic of my oldest son and Groucho Marx. We went to a show about a year ago and this person was FANTASTIC as Groucho. He was absolutely unbelievable. Anyway, we were sitting up front with the fam so we got picked on a bit. He ended up pulling my son up on stage with him and painting his face and then having him perform with him. Now, you should know ..... my son is very very reserved and very very shy. So, when he started dancing and mirroring groucho and the audience was nearly crying they were lauging so hard --- I nearly fell out of my chair! He was even featured in the newspaper.

It was a turning point (I feel) for him. He is a performer himself...a magician and quite good at it. He has so much charisma and such an amazing personality. But he was not able to get in front of people. This has completely changed that and he even performs for pay sometimes now. How cool is that?

Anyway, it was such a memorable and instant turning point that was so very plain to see for me that it simply astounds me every single time I see the pic and reminds me that change is a state of mind. (and even after all these years I still am so amazed at how blessed I am to have this soul in my life -- all my kids are this way to me) How does something so wonderful and so beautiful come from someone like me???

Your welcome.:) Storing the bottles with the lid undone is best but then they tend to tip over. If you use them frequently put a sheet of paper toweling inside the bottle and screw the lid on as loosly as possible. The paper absorbs any odors and moisture. Do not put tops on if not using them regularly!

I also keep a shallow tray in a drawer for all of the smaller removable container lids. Also to rid containers of an unwanted smell soak in a baking soda (1T.) and water solution overnight.

EPPP

Hello Shine!!!:D

You can get the Nalgene bottle in any sporting goods store like REI. The company make 1000's of plastic products but the main consumer product are the wide mouth containers.

I have tried every container material for smoothie & soup storage and these bottles give food the longest fridge life even over glass unfortunatly.

Here is the direct link:
http://www.nalgene-outdoor.com/

Also for REI:
http://www.rei.com/search?vcat=REI_SEARCH&query=Nalgene

I use these for salad dressing on the go; and agave travel:
http://www.rei.com/product/605849

and
http://www.containerstore.com/browse/Product.jhtml?searchId=12018034&itemIndex=64&CATID=74063&PRODID=69233

link for The Container Store; I use the 32oz for storage and the 16oz for kids lunchbox.
http://www.containerstore.com/search/searchresults.jhtml?search=Nalgene&searchId=12018028&start=1&page=1&howMany=999

This I use for drinking smoothies out of. I LOVE it, LOVE it! wide mouth, spill proof. . .
http://www.rubbermaid.com/rubbermaid/product/product.jhtml?prodId=HPProd100018

I use these 1 & 4oz jars for storage in kids lunch boxes for olives, pickes, coleslaw anything wet. They are thick enought not to break in kids hands.
http://www.containerstore.com/browse/Product.jhtml?searchId=12018034&itemIndex=14&CATID=74064&PRODID=69228

Also glass I send fruit in:
http://www.containerstore.com/browse/Product.jhtml?searchId=12018034&itemIndex=38&CATID=62522&PRODID=69216

These for nuts, raisins, dates, grains & crackers. Not these exact ones but very similar:
http://www.containerstore.com/browse/Product.jhtml?searchId=12018034&itemIndex=7&CATID=74062&PRODID=68269

I know more info than you wanted. I would add pictures but my photo allowance in running low!:o

I hope this answers your question!

TRAVELING RAW:eek:   those words are enough to keep people forever in their own bakyards!!!

I was spurred to write this because of a thread by momma-Rawma asking for advice on traveling raw!

I do a bit of traveling and will be going home to the UK in the spring. Because of this I had already started a binder I keep in the kitchen for thoughts and notes on what to bring and how to function.

Here is what I have come up with so far:

1. Tribest personal blender: see far left of page and click on Appliances under Alissa's Store; great for traveling (if needing 220V go directly to Tribest website) If you travel to a location often consider buying a blender to keep there. If it;s a hotel consider asking them to provide a blender in your room or if you can use the kitchens.

1a. Just want to update that the Tribest Personal blender worked wonderfully!

2. Frozen green smoothies: I fill several Nalgene bottles with my liquid of choice and freeze. I put these in my main luggage so they go into the suitcase hold where it is very cold. depending on how many you pack they can last you a nice amount of time. Or at least keep you going until you have had time to shop.

3. Raw food delivery: For my trip home in the spring I am having some raw meals delivered to where we will be staying from www.purelyraw.com in the UK. I will also be having some snacks delivered from www.rawliving.co.uk.

4. Planning: I have already started planning what foods I cannot do without that will travel well and might be hard for me to get right away on the trip: Agave, untoasted nori, sea salt, nama shoyu, super foods, mana bread, nut butter etc.

I am also taking a list of recipes that are easy to prepare at the drop of a hat. When on unfamilliar territory you tend to have brain farts and forget basic easy things you can do.

Pate's and cheeses actually travel well. Again freeze and put in your luggage.

5.Dehydrates items: make up batches of your favorite crackers, flat breads, cookies, bucuits etc.

6. A few pre-made treat items: items you would normally only get as "treats" to yourself like raw chocolate or snack items from places like www.oneluckyduck.com. That way if you have temptation issues you can feel your can "reward" yourself with one of the treats.

7. Know the area: Go oneline and locate the nearest healthfood shops and juice bars. Find what grocery stores there are and where. Print off maps for these in relation to your lodgings.

8. Airport and Plane: Really plan for these areas and pack for each. Dont put yourself in the position of longing for the cooked food everyone else will be eating just because you are board from sitting around or because you are stressed from "airport issues".

At the airport if you desparatly want a coffee go ahead and go to starbucks and ask for a cup of hot water & lid (remember to offer to pay for the cup or leave a tip) and put in your own tea bag to have with the dehydrated buscuits your brought. That way the ceramony is still there just not the SAD food!

For the plane think of flavours & textures you will crave; sweet, salty, crunchy, fatty, etc and pack you lunch according to those. Have matching snacks to. When the trolly comes round and offers little bags of nuts or crackers have yours already packed up and ready to go. Already have in your head what you want to drink. Think over what the flight attendant may have: cups, straws, lemon, club soda, hot water etc. What can you do with these? Do you want hot or cold? Tea or club soda with lemon and a dash of the agave you have in your little traveling container. Or soup; have some miso past e in a conatiner, get your cup of hot water adding some cold to cool down a bit and stir in your miso. You may have even brought some copped scallions and sea veg to add!

Purse sized bottles for dressing, agave etc: http://www.containerstore.com/browse/Product.jhtml?searchId=12018034&itemIndex=64&CATID=74063&PRODID=69233

. . . . . .You will have a hard time feeling sorry you are not having the SAD food. . . . . .

9. Knife and Cutting board: I just bought a paring knife with sheath for traveling and a mini cutting board. A set of travel cutlery would also be useful - I like the Hello Kitty sets. They are small and compact or try sporting good shops.

travel knife: http://www.williams-sonoma.com/products/sku5177480/index.cfm?pkey=ccutnewb

I keep looking for a small cutting board with intagrated knife but no luck as of yet!

10. DRINK LOTS OF WATER WHEN FLYING!!!

11. I also found that when traveling with young children the "liquid" rules were looser as long as you took a sip of the items in front of security.

Happy travels everyone!:p

Cheers,

EPPP

PS: blog from a raw flight attendant Mel s12 - http://www.rawmelanie.blogspot.com/ - I love her reminder "Remember that on a plane, your digestive system explands so you don't want to bog it down with anything heavy. Eat as lightly as possible, and as minimum as possible."

DharmaGirl:

Sorry for the late reply, I did not see the post :) !

Firstly, no I never have a problem with mildew. I live in Seattle and it does rain a lot but we do not really get humidity. My nuts are kept in the pantry in glass jars with a paper towel inside to absorb any moisture that may get in - actually I put a paper towel in all my glass jars for this reason especially dehydrated items. I do keep high oil nuts in the fridge and I only buy what i need of these: macadamia, Pine & Brazil nuts.

Dehydrated items if NOT FULLY DEHYDRATED do go moldy if not kep in fridge/freezer. For this reason I keep flat breads and cookies in the freezer and take out a 6-10 at a time.

I just went downstairs and made up a list of my current pantry items for you.

In pantry in larger quantities:

cashew
carob (from alissa's store)
sunflower seeds
walnuts
hazelnuts
almonds
dates, Majool & Honey
sucanat - dried cane sugar
sun dried tomates
pecans
raisins
sesame seeds, wht
oat groats
Raw chocolate bars with super foods, www.rawliving.co.uk
raw bars, big jar of assorted types & flavours

All that gorgeous food. You make your CRUSTS ahead of time and a monthly menu?! That's a lucky family...

EPPP,

Where are you travelling to in England and when?

Tracy

Hey Tracy,

I will be there from the 1st of April for 2.5 week I think. We will be in Whiltshire nr Salisbury then on to Wales and back over to Chesham, Bucks.

If I am near you is there anything I can bring over for you; if so you can have it mailed to me and I will just bring it in my luggage :) ?! I am SOOO excited, I miss it over there very much!

There is a raw foods delivery service I am going to order from and you guys have a huge range of raw chocolate bar producers over there :p

Cheers,

Hi EPPP

You aren't going to be particularly close to me - I live in Surrey (south of London) although I do travel to Caerphilly in Wales for my work every couple of weeks.

I'm working from home for the next 6 weeks though as I had a foot operation last week and have to stay off it. So no driving down the M4 for me until maybe 2nd week in April at the earliest.

I know what you mean about the raw chocolate here. Shazzie and Raw Living do excellent bars and I'm sure there's more out there I haven't tasted.

If you get a more detailed itinerary of your UK trip, do let me know and I'll see if I will be mobile enough to meet up with you for a bit.

Best wishes.

In my quest to find the perfect dressing bottle I looked in my fridge and there in the door were all my Annie's dressing bottles. So went the lightbulb. . .in my head that is.

This lead me to other conatiners like my nut butter, honey & GT jars. Bingo! These are just THE BEST jars! The best bit is the rubber like stuff inside the lids that keep out air and prevent leaks.

Now how to get the lables off. I wont bore you with my many experiments and will go straight to what worked.

1. put container & lids in dishwasher run cycle and boil kettle
2. REMOVE BEFORE HEAT DRYING at end of cycle
3. remove all loose lables and toss
4. pour a bit of boiling water over to keep adhesive soft
5. using jiff/soft scrub and a brillo pad scrub baby scrub
6. rinse

Do not store with tops on.

EPPP, you make me sick!!! Ugh, I wish I could be as organised as you are. Although, in my head I am, but when it comes to my kitchen, no where near.

I deal with a partner that puts stuff back wherever he feels like it will fit, even when I yell at him about keeping things organised. In his defense, he did live 14 years with his ex partner who was like one of the worst offenders on 'How Clean Is Your House'. Very hard to retrain 14 years of really bad habits!

I am going to have to find some places here in Northumberland that have containers that I can use. I love that idea. Right now most of my dry goods are in plastic bags and glass coffee/tea/sugar containers I found at poundstretchers. Although, I have seen some really nice containers at Ikea that would be really nice.

So you are coming home to the UK? Are you originally from here? I could order probably a whole extra case of stuff to be brought here. The prices in the states are so much cheaper than they are here, and when you are living on a fixed budget, stuff gets hard to do.

I am very inspired by you, and I think if I print out all of your tips, I might be able to get my partner to help me get things organised!!

Thanks for all of your wonderful posts!!!! (You really don't make me sick!!)

My raw organization strategy is cheap and simple. I had a few mason canning jars in my house and when I went raw I bought a case of 12 more. 3 are for sprouting, 2 are used for my daily 2 quarts of water with lemon and MSM, and the rest are for storage. I put some in the cupboard and some in the fridge. They hold nuts, seeds, coconut, sprouting seeds, raisins, dates, nutritional yeast, carob powder, etc. I have the quart size and I like the wide mouth jars that I can fit my hand in to wash. Here is my fridge door:

The other thing I've done to cut down on the wasting of our precious raw foods is to reuse the plastic containers that field greens and baby spinach are sometimes sold in. I try not to buy in plastic, but sometimes I do and now at least the containers are reused. I wash the containers and the as soon as I get home with fresh groceries, I put them into the containers in the refrigerator.
I put a few holes in the one for spinach. In the boxes, I can see what's in there and nothing gets lost in that big tangle of plastic bags in the recesses of the refrigerator. This has helped me eat all of everything, and not waste those priceless greens!

Wow I have been here for years and never saw this. If duh was a city I would be the mayor. I still after 3 years raw, have issues with spoilage so I just stock up and eat up!...

So question, With the paper bag veggie storage, is that for more solid veggies like carrots, cucumbers or is it good for leafy greens? I usually buy spinach, in the bunches since the ones in the plastic always get soggy, but I might have to try your tip, maybe get 2 and put other leafy greens in them... So how many holes do you punch in those plastic boxes spinach?

So you removed your veggie and fruit, carts at the bottom of the fridge? Aren't certain fruits etc not supposed to be in the same area for some ripening reasons, I think I heard that a long time ago.. Either way, I NEEDS TO GET ORGAN-IZED...

Thanks again for the tips!;)

Either way thanks much!

One of the things that I have learned from Jamie Olivers show here in the UK is the best way to keep root veg. Turnips, carrots, potato, parsnip, etc.

He uses a big wooden box layered with veg and a good quality compost. His root veg usually keeps for months storing them in this manner. While those kept in the normal storage methods only keep for a few weeks.

Just an idea, I think the paper bag storage sort of simulates the compost box.

What about leafy greens? Same way? Does the paper bag need to be completely closed?

Yay!

Well, Cape Cod is BEAUTIFUL! As is NH. No income tax in NH, but property taxes are HIGH. Some folks choose to live in NH and commute to Boston to work, as it is so expensive to live there. (I just learned this today as a friend has guests who live in Jamaica Plain in Boston and they were telling me about this today.)

So why do you want to leave Seattle and go east? I'm just curious - nosy, maybe.

eppp - what I learned (from this forum) and it works is to take a small piece of fruit - say banana. Put into a canning jar (or any jar will do, I just have tons of canning jars around). Then take a piece of paper, roll into a cone - insert the small opening into the jar and then widen the top opening. The fruit flies will go down to get to the banana, but then can't get out. I then take 'em outside and release them. It really works. And I even this time of year in Maryland am having fruit fly issues.
Roll the paper like this and then insert into a jar.

I think I need one to keep track of what is actually IN the fridge!! Actually I just realized that I have this in the email I send out with the menu tracker & shopping list. When I have time I will transfer to here.

So what I do is keep the months recipes on the cupboard (alone with printoff of the recipes from whatever book) and tick off as i go noting if they are keepers or not. If they are keepers I transfer the recipe to and old fashioned recipe card and into the recipe box.

I keep TWO shopping lists on the fridge. One is the current weeks to fill in and tick. I have pre-printed items on the list that just get ticked and spaces for me to fill in by hand. I also list on the back what recipes this list is catering for - very important. No point in keeping track what you have if you cant figure out what bloody repcipe you had planned it for!!

When I am shopping I circle or x what I bought indicating if I was able to buy it or not; I do this in the qty column so as not to abscure the food listed making it unable to read! When I get home I put this "used" list on the the door of the fridge making sure to transfer the items I was unable to get onto the "other" list to try and get next week if needed. The "used" list is for letting me know what I have bought so I dont forget, I then cross off what I have used as I go through it.

There, I think I covered everything let me know if not!

Cheers,

EPPP

I never plan for it, it just creeps up on me and the next thing I notice I have cleared all my counters and refilled them with the contents of my pantry shelves.

I also have one side of my sink filled with hot soapy water with a drop of bleach added. The dinning table is laid out with clean tea towles.

Why? Well the SPRING CLEAN BUG has hit. This happened to me last night. My husband came home (rolled his eyes, lovingly) and knew we would not be spending quality time together that evening.

For me this clearout is crucial. There gets to be a point where my daily food prep process comes to a slow halt, and I find myself wanting to reach for that which should not be touched, something. . . prepared - EEK! This is because slowly my once pristine cupboards / pantry are well, a mess!

This means sticky or cloudy jars, jars with not well recieved dehydrated snacks, seeds, nuts & grains I have not touched in months! You may wonder how this happenes. Well my pantry glass jars are three deep and nine across, these are 1/2 gallon size. My cupboard has rows of quart and 1/2 quart jars too. So things get forgotton.

Whilst, none of these old items had actually gone off I choose this time to pitch them and refill with fresh. You may think this is a waste but most of these are very inexpensive items as the pricier items I do not keep in large quantities and my turn over is regular and consistant with those. Just get rid of items you are not comfortable with eating! Remeber if you are not using it there is NO REASON TO KEEP IT, it just adds clutter!

This is where the sink full of hot soapy water comes in. After emptying them, I place all the jars in the sink and give them a good wash then place on the towels to dry. I do this by hand as I really could not fit that many in the dishwasher!

This clearout also addresses "other" canned and boxed pantry items. If it has dust wash it, check date, and pitch it or put it in a bag to donate.

This all seems like common sense but hey how long does it take us to get round to it? How often do you open your cupboard to put away your groceries and have no room but at the same time you swear you have nothing in the house. The classic case of Mother hubbords Cupboard is FULL OF CR*P!

I do this once a year for one evening, that's all it takes :) So, put eveyone to bed, done you apron, gloves and a great CD and GO FOR IT!!

Cheers,

EPPP

You rock Peachplum, I would love to be able throw out all the sad food and have a lovely organized Raw kitchen. {{SIGH}}. But it's okay, I'm biding my time , I will convert them(hubby and 4 boys) one dish at a time.;)

Ha ha ha, I did not throw out all the SAD food as I still have a SAD easter in the family. I just tossed the items that were taking up space because I was not using them!

My mum always said "always use the good china and wear all your jewels" keeping them in storage is just a waste! So as a professed packrat I am always trying to keep to the use or toss it method!

And I love your "one dish at a time" that's such a great way of looking at it!:D

Cheers,

EPPP

EPPP - I LOVE this thread, I've been reading it over the past couple of days and I've been feeling the Spring Cleaning bug as well, maybe I'll dive in today. I do have a bulk food order coming tomorrow so it would be good timing (AND it's garbage day ;)). I was wondering does your offer still stand for your menu tracker, I would love something to help organize my menus, my hubby has been bugging me to switch from my weekly menu planning to a monthly plan (I've been a bit resistant). I enjoy your posts very much, you are a very generous person with your time and talents. Thank you.

Blessings,
Heather

Oh, my god... I am in AWE! Your kitchen gives me food-gasms (or are they orga(ni)sms? :p)

So funny i found this thread, because i did the whole cupboard-organizing thing yesterday and put all the dry stuff in glass jars, and i just love looking at it, i don't even wanna eat anything, bc i loove looking at it!

I feel like i need to organise more, it such a wonderful feeling to have a room completley organised and ready for work!

Brings to mind the clean up machine the Cat In The Hat uses to clean up the BIG mess he made with Thing One & Thing Two; now THAT would be handy to have!

Awesome thread thanks for all the ideas. Now can you keep my veggies from freezing when the hit the back of the fridge? Some of those spinach boxes go the whole depth of the fridge. I also add pepertowels to my veggie boxes. If an Item is in a plastic bag I put a papertowel in and turn the bag upside down so all the moisture drains into the towel.

First, I will admit, that I didn't read all of this thread, but one thing I would like to mention is that I keep my nuts in the fridge especially during the summer. It gets pretty hot here in the summer and the nuts go bad pretty quickly in the heat. It kills me to have $$$ of nuts wasted!!!

In (no car) GARAGE in fall/winter/spring:

All veggies from store in paper bags or in cups of water
All fruit

My fruits & veg keep SOOOO much longer in the cold garage than they ever do in the fridge so I really look forward to being able to store foods this way. The mice managed to eat through all the wiring in my car engine but never come into the garage when the weather is cold.

This list does not include the always on hand prepared items written about in and earlier post like cheesed, dressing & pates etc. Hope this helps,

All the best,

EPPP

Hello!

As an addition to the Pantry List post #99 (remember can no longer edit) here is an image of my greens (in glasses of water) in the garage. This was last years photo. This year I am planning on clearing a larger space adding many more fridge items.

Cheers,

EPPP

Hello lovenlife!

Yes, I have posted quite a few images over the years. Although many no longer work because of site upgrades.

The images listed in this Thread are attached to Post #'s:

1, 12, 14, 19, 24, 93 Traveling, 99 Pantry List, 106 & 169

Enjoy!

Long long ago in one of the first "Photos Only" Threads (now archived) there were pictures of my kitchen but because that thread is from several site upgrades ago the images no longer translate. Beside the images in this thread are much more current.:o

This threads photos are however, fine, mostly. In the top right corner of each post within a thread there is a number. That's the post number you want to correlate to the numbers I listed for in the other mail.

Was that what you were confused about? Please let me know if I can help further.

Okay, bumping for a couple of reasons again, but different ones this time.:)

1) Getting ready to move, so inspiration for my new kitchen (whenever I find which one it'll be).

2) Cuz the holidays are coming & we all like to be more organized around then dontcha think?;)

Me? Where've I been? Oh, just sittin' round in Seattle twiddleing me thumbs . . . .

I dont post very much any longer because I'm a VISUAL sorta gal and I used up my RFT photo allowence YEARS ago. I just find it painful to write without an accompanying image.

If anyone has any tips for how I can post photos that do not rely on my RFT allotment please do tell!!!!!:sadtears:

I've been on and off this forum for years and never saw this! How did that happen? EPPP - is it possible to have you email me the menu tracker and list of what's in the fridge, etc? I jotted down your email addy but don't know if it's the same. Thank you so much for all the info. I also need to track down your Thanksgiving post I was reading about. Is it possible for you to re-register as EPPP2 or something similar so you can post pictures? I've never posted a pic so you can use my photo allowance. :)

eachpeachpearplum
04-27-2012, 06:02 PM
Yup sure, I'd be happy to send it to you. You will need to provide me with your email address. If you are interested in reading some of my other posts just click onto my profile and on the left it offers a choice of reading threads I've initiated and that's where you will locate the Thanksgiving 101 thread.

I just KNOW there is a way for me to do photos other than through RFT but I can't recall what it is. Your offer of your allotment is very very sweet! Someone has suggested Flicker, so I'm going to look into that.

Cheers,

EPPP

Thanks so much. I'll send you an email. Too bad we can't somehow transfer my allotment to you. I have seen where people post links to their pictures but I am not well versed in computers. You could always link it to a blog that you start with all of your amazing tips. :)

Yeah I'm kinda nerding out a bit myself because I just recieve my half gallon, and quart size ball mason jar packs. They are so purdy like. They are really really nice with measurements on the side. Compared to my ol boring jars, these are niiice. Imma be a fermenting kefiring masta soon! Oh and storing...
