I finally got some really good avocados and it caused me to stop and think about how easy it is and what a pleasure it is to be a raw fooder when you can get really good foods that burst in your mouth with great natural taste and texture. The quality of the food makes such a difference. I also have some really good red globe grapes right now and some new crop crispy apples that I can hardly stop eating. One of the things that I have found that helps me with the fresh quality of the foods is to go to the store often, I go everyday or two, so that I buy on a just on time basis. What are some of the things that you do to help get good quality foods into your kitchen ?

I shop at many locations on my way home...every 3 days or so....and take the best of the best/cheapest...from each store. I also find sources of local stuff that people grow...you know?

I shop at farmers' markets for nice and fresh food :)

Another person here that shops at the farmers market. There are a number of them around the county, I try and make at least 2 a week.
I've also joined the local food co-op, they'll order young thai coconuts for me and have a great selection of organic legumes for sprouting.

I have a great farmers market right down the street from me. It's not organic but sometimes local is better.

Umm just my 456789 cents but I believe local is 100000 times better! so they wasted some petroleum in pestisides but at least your food did not travel 1500 miles.

I asked the store managers of the food co-ops I go to when they usually get their largest fruit and vegetable shipments. Now I shop on the evening of the shipping date or the morning after. Generally they get shipments daily, but for certain produce, like apples and bananas they come in on specific days. Lately though the avocados are not very good, no matter when I shop. :(
I also noticed when I buy my produce early in the morning, particularly at farmer's markets, it makes a profound difference in the quality, taste and longevity of the food for some reason.

to improve the quality of food in my kitchen...well my first big step was NOT TO BE CHEAP when it comes to my body's nourishment! I Finally got the guts to start buying only first cold pressed olive oil and actually some sesame oil too now...my next step is Coconut oil hihihi.
i also shop more often than before --actually that's how we'd always shop at home before. Now people like to make one big supermarket trip and, to save gas or whatever, get enough food for a week or two. I enjoy going to buy my food every 2-3 days... :D

I agree! I go to the store every 2 or 3 days as well. It seems tedious at times, but freshness and quality really are key to staying and enjoying raw food. I have some giant, crisp fuji apples and crazy sweet navel oranges that I am totally loving right now! *sigh* I miss watermelon more than anything right now though, so I'm trying not to think about it.

I appreciated your posts to this thread. I have located a local farmers market location and noted the hours and I will check that out. Also I will check my co-op for the delivery times so as to get the freshest produce available. And I have decided to make sure to put quality ahead of price and not be cheap about something as important as the quality of the foods. Lastly I will continue to make frequent trips to the store to support my "just on time" approach to ensuring the freshness of my produce. I agree with Cherri that freshness and quality are key to staying and enjoying raw food. Thanks for the useful and thoughtful responses :)
