Has anyone come up with a way of eliminating fruit flies? This time, they invaded my garbanzo sprouts, inside the jar!!!

I think they come with the raw lifestyle. But to keep them down I wipe everything, counters, sinks, compost bucket with a weak bleach solution. Also if you want to go natural they don't like the smell of Cit-r-cel found in most co-ops.
Also I keep most of my food in the fridge, make sure everything is fresh as possible, empty garbage and wash the container with bleach.
Also make sure there is no water around, dry off your counters, any spills, etc, water will sure draw them
Hope this helps, good luck.

They magically appear whenever there is food that they're interested in! Apparently they have a keen sense of smell and combining that with the ability to sneak into tiny cracks, they seem to be able to spontaneously generate.
I'm sure buying all organic produce brings them in too.

There is a thing that I bought from Home Depot that you can hang in your kitchen that works. I believe it by HotShots.
If you can't find that what you can do is in put a drop or two of dish liquid in a cup with some acv. I don't know if they are attracted to the bubbles from the soap or the acv but they fly into the cup and can't get out.
Hope this helps.

I am so happy that someone started this thread. I noticed that after I started buying organic I got the little buggers and no matter what I did I could not get rid of them. Even after I stopped buying organic due to cost - they lingered - even seriously invading my refridgerator and flying all over my house. I would wipe down the surfaces with bleach and all kinds of cleansers but to no avail. I will try some of the remedies you guys have posted. These little critters are resilient!:(

I wonder if they come in on the produce in the form of eggs and then hatch after their at their new home ?

Something similar to something else already mentioned......I learned working at a health food store to simply put equal amounts of apple cider vinegar with dish soap cut with water in a bowl and the fruit flies are attracted to the vinegar but get stuck from the soap: spells out Fruit Fly Genocide!

I get rid of them by placing straight Apple Cider Vinegar in a glass, and then cover the glass with a funnel. They can get in, but they can't fly out. Leave the glass out for several days until you do not see any more. Easy! Sometimes you may have to change out the acv after 5 or 6 days... Works like a charm!! :)

Great ideas, Stina and Romanticsnet!! I remember trying the vinegar thing a few years ago, but couldn't wait for the results--probably because I used white vinegar and couldn't stand the smell! (The white stuff stays in the utility closet for window and mirror use!) It never occured to me to try the good stuff--ACV. Next time......
Thanks.

You stole my thread!:D I was just about to post this very question. My house is being over run with them. It reminds me of my college days in genetics class. Drosophilia, oh my!. I will definately try the soap and apple cider vinegar trick. When there were just a few, fresh basil planted among my fruit kept them away. Now there are so many that they are all over the basil too!
